Flying Dutchman
stones788 September 2015
This decent segment stars Florence Henderson, Peter Graves, Hans Conreid(who died only 3 days after this episode aired), Brett Halsey, Dick Smothers, Arlene Golonka, and Shelley Smith. Without going into much detail, I'll say that both stories were pretty decent, although they both seemed a tad rushed. The opening was rather cool, as Mr. Roarke greets a ship in a misty fog, as it turns out to be a man known as the Flying Dutchman(Graves), who is cursed to roam the seas for eternity unless he finds true love. This is where Laura(Henderson)comes in, and even there too many make-out sessions between them, I didn't sense a real chemistry either. It was still a good story though. The other story has Ron(Smothers)trying to arrange a meeting with a very wealthy miser, played convincingly by Conreid, with the help of a mysterious Miss Harbinger(Smith). Nothing that memorable occurs here, but it ended nice. Although not listed in the credits, Julie(Wendy Schaal)takes the place of Tattoo here.

Boring beyond bore!
imdb-2528810 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Two completely inanely boring stories this time! UGH! Was Peter Graves always this soporific an actor? I cringed this time when I read his name. I have loved Airplane! The movie and he's great in it. (Or is he?! Maybe because he played it deadpan?) I thought he was known to be good in Mission Impossible? Well, every episode of F. I. he's starred in has been boring beyond bore. And he's the cause of it.

Did Peter Graves drop his charisma from de plane, de plane into the Pacific? Was the cargo too heavy? Well, no: this time he arrives via antique sailboat! And the ONLY reason why this gets a five and not less: the story editor (or is that the set decor guy?) did a fantastic job with the boat (stock images? How/where did they get that, I'd like to know!) plus setting the mood with the fog and cloudy skies. Now, this decorator should have worked in the previous episode's horror segment!

Florence Henderson, she of the Brady Bunch, added nothing to the story: boring actress here and the two shared zero chemistry, even when they did have to kiss. UGH! She, however, did look lovely in an elegant green dress with moons for polka dots.

The 2nd story bored me even worse, if that's possible. I have no idea where they got such boring actors (the couple). I had never seen them before, nor since. And, indeed, they are both plain jane and plain joe with zero charisma. The ONLY redeeming part? The actress (looking vaguely familiar, but I've not seen her 2 other F. I. episodes!) who played the angel. She was just so lovely and truly owned her part. So much so, that I think they ought to have made a spinoff here, starring her as the angel. Doing what? No idea but she was as much the angel as Lynda Carter was Wonder Woman. She projected that same type of "goodness".

No Tattoo here, and that's another minus. Julie did have a bit more to do that in later episodes, and they created gags of sorts in the beginning for her. We get to see a llama at the end. (What was that about?!)

What a pity that this show could never get its act together! I would have fired the problem people who wrote the corny stories and the terrible directors and replaced by excellent ones and better set decor. This show had promise but it was very wasted. Ricardo did save it from utter mediocrity and shared a lot of chemistry with Herve. Together, they made the show. I'm sorry that this episode was a mess. A 4/10, really but giving it the five for Shelley Smith's (the angel's) performance. Not one to rewatch.
