Thoroughly forgettable

A pretty average episode that emphasizes that at this point any dramatic heft most definitely does not come from the tamers. An abundance of squabbling between Rika and the boys characterizes the first third of the running time, which makes sense. They have exactly the type of personality that will test Rika's patience (and frankly they do deserve to be scorned). Too bad none of it is for the sake of progression, since their relationship with her does not really change later in the series. The rest of the episode concerns how these 3 meet Ryo, perhaps the most superfluous character the series ever churns out. Now, I'll be the first to say that Ryo is just another blotch on the cast of this show, but that will all be explained later. For now, suffice it to say that he just fails to grab the viewer's interest, mostly due to his vanilla, all-around-good-guy demeanor. It's not enough that he appears and saves the day. No, he's got to fix the clock, fix Hagurumon and give an inspiring speech. The fact that he once beat Rika in a card tournament provides the opportunity for an interesting dynamic, but sadly not much will come of this aside from a much underplayed attraction. Positive points include the fight with Megadramon, Cyberdramon's sleek design and attack, and the area with the gears, which is thus far the most unique place the kids have been to. Unfortunately, none of these make up for Rika's unspeakably foolish decision to wander off on her own at the end.
