Can any father-to-be be THAT nutty?!
planktonrules26 November 2023
When Ritchie asks "Where Did I Come From?", Rob decides to talk to his son about the events leading up to his birth...and a long flashback scene follows.

Laura is pregnant and due to deliver her baby soon. She's calm and relaxed but Rob is a mess. He's a bundle of nerves and it's hard to imagine a father-to-be being THAT worried about the pending birth. Again and again, Rob does all sorts of nutty things, such as sleeping in his clothes! It all culminates with Rob rushing home when Laura's contractions begin...and he ends up smashing into the cab parked in front of his house. What's next?

This is a completely unrealistic episode...but it's also quite funny and watching Dick Van Dyke rushing about like a looney is pretty funny. The humor is mostly physical...and he is excellent in such a role. Well worth seeing.

An unforgettable moment

I may not have 600 characters worth of comment, but this episode highlights how important physical comedy was in sitcoms from the '50s and early '60s. Seems as if they got far more verbal with less movement after that. Frasier was one of the few that still tossed some slapstick and classic farce action into a bunch of its episodes in more recent times.

Now for my main point. I loved this series when it originally aired. It's been over 50 years since I saw Rob's panic prep, but the shtick has stayed firmly embedded in my data bank. Those practice moves with the hat gave me the biggest laughs and fondest memory of the show's great run. Still works just as well.

There. 600 characters in praise of a perfect 10 moment.

Painful as Childbirth?

Oh boy .. I guess it was funny back in the day but for a show that touted itself as a new sophisticated comedy this is a cringing miss ...or mess ! I can't fathom how any man who works for a major TV down in New York would act like Lou Costello because his wife is expecting. It's been done to death; most notably on I Love Lucy when Ricky and even the Mertzes go bananas at the point of Lucy's announcement of labor. But here it's beyond the pale. Sure it allows for Van Dyke's physical comedy skill but it morphs into a silly string of gags; the oversized suit; phone down the pants; and on and on ..someone call 911 !
