"F Troop" might have lent out a more convincing adversary this week

Daniel, Cully, Gabe and a Continental Army colonel are covertly shipping gold under a travois of furs, but they are waylaid by never-do-well Solomon Tarbot (Strother Martin) and his two sons.

More budget-sized adventure as Season 6 nears the halfway mark. Naturally Martin, who carved out a considerable Westerns career playing garrulous and voice-annoying frontiersmen on the make, takes over the hour. He's probably better experienced in a larger production as an easily dispatched foil for John Wayne and the like; a little of him went a long way. And interestingly Zalman King, who achieved a fair amount of success as a 1980's actor and producer, is along for the ride as a Tarbot progeny.

The writing on this one probably bounced back and forth between a comedy outing or a straight manhunt, and probably should have stayed with the former. An Israel kidnapping is worked in, and he plays mind games with the less-than-ept outlaw crew. By this point Darby Hinton was probably demanding more agency and larger roles. The hour tries to an extent, but he is probably about three-four years too young to be believable as a protagonist.

Although nominally a Revolutionary War adventure (and some Redcoats would have upped the stakes considerably here) the history component is less than believable. Dan and cohorts are trying improbably to move Fort Knox sized gold bars by a one horse travois over mountain country, in quantity that would likely have funded Washington's army for a century. The detail is on its way to "Fort Kenny" - only known one was a settlement near Austin, Tx. During the 1830's.

A chase episode that never really gets to a good chase sequence, and in pursuit of villains that are less than formidable. We had a crazed-family hour the week before last, and the quota has easily been met.
