Murder in Music City - minus the music

Daniel and Josh are on a wagon trip eastward from Nashborough and part so Josh can see to axle repairs. En route again, Josh meets with a Scottish trapper Macfarlane (James Doohan) but awakes to find him murdered, and Josh finds himself under suspicion.

DB falls back this week on an old reliable for 1960's prime time westerns, the story of a series regular accused of murder in a strange town. Highly predictable, but livened up considerably by a strong guest cast, including Doohan ("Scotty") in one of his first post-"Star Trek:TOS" roles. This was his 2nd turn on the series, but sadly he makes an early exit here. Alex Karras, the star tackle for the Detroit Lions of the 60's who then found a new career as a film tough guy, does well as a hulking blacksmith. And accountant lookalike Vaughn Taylor, who made a specialty of playing frontier judges, takes the bench here as well.

The hour is set in Fort Nashborough, the predecessor of Nashville, Tenn. The settlement was up and running by 1779, a couple of years after Boonesborough. (Nothing really new to look at here; the Boonesborough set doubles as Nashborough.) The hour is somewhat confused in its geography, making reference to Williamsburg and Charlottesville, Va. As a day or two away. A more considerable trek across the Appalachians during the Revolutionary period.

Action is fairly minimal except for some poacher-nabbing and a tavern brawl. The change of locale is interesting, but would have been even better with some historical margin-pushing - perhaps bringing in a young Andrew Jackson.
