This nicely styled and nicely done episode of Checkmate has recently released from prison master criminal Peter Lorre having 15 years to plot vengeance on the man who put him there, Sebastian Cabot. But Lorre has to have his vengeance served just a little cold. He invites Cabot over to dine with him and Cabot agrees. Just like Sherlock Holmes accepting the hospitality of Professor Moriarty.
These two dominate this film as a deadly cat and mouse game is played. Lorre springs his trap and gets Cabot accused of murder. More I won't say, but it involves an intricate plot where Lorre associates Ronald Long, June Vincent, and Richard Bakalyn all play carefully laid out roles.
Of course Lorre is foiled, but not so much by failure of the plan itself, but failure to take account the real emotions of ordinary human beings. Holmes could not have put it better to Moriarty himself.
Lorre and Cabot are a real treat in this fine Checkmate episode.
