Master Criminologist versus Master Criminal
bkoganbing6 February 2013
This nicely styled and nicely done episode of Checkmate has recently released from prison master criminal Peter Lorre having 15 years to plot vengeance on the man who put him there, Sebastian Cabot. But Lorre has to have his vengeance served just a little cold. He invites Cabot over to dine with him and Cabot agrees. Just like Sherlock Holmes accepting the hospitality of Professor Moriarty.

These two dominate this film as a deadly cat and mouse game is played. Lorre springs his trap and gets Cabot accused of murder. More I won't say, but it involves an intricate plot where Lorre associates Ronald Long, June Vincent, and Richard Bakalyn all play carefully laid out roles.

Of course Lorre is foiled, but not so much by failure of the plan itself, but failure to take account the real emotions of ordinary human beings. Holmes could not have put it better to Moriarty himself.

Lorre and Cabot are a real treat in this fine Checkmate episode.

Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** Just released from the "clink"-Prison-after a 15 year stretch master criminal Alonzo Pace Graham played by the frog like looking Peter Lorre wants nothing more then to get even with the man that put him there master criminologist the Teddy Bear like Dr. Carl "Fat Man" Hyatt,Sabestian Cabot. It's Alonzo's plan to get a double who looks like "Fat Man" Hyatt and have him try to murder his colleague at the "Checkmate" Detective Agency"and end up behind bars or killed while resisting arrest by the police.

Using an old flame of his Helena Quattreal,June Vincent, to set the "Fat Guy" up Alonzo gets his double, who looks at lest 20 pounds lighter then Hyatt, Bruno "The Bull" played by Roland Long to try to murder Hyatt's partner in the detective agency Don Corey, Anthony George, and thus have Corey as well as the police blast him, not Bruno but Hyatt, when they catch up with him.

***SPOILERS*** As you would have expected Alonzo's brilliant master plan falls completely apart. With Hyatt as well as Corey seeing right through it and by using blanks they convince a thinking he got away with murder Alonzo who was hiding in closet, a perfect place for him, to see the show as he prematurely showed up at the so-called murder scene. Only to get himself cuffed and arrested by the police and now sent up the river for a second time for his failed effort to rub out Hyatt.
