Great guest stars

Checkmate always delivered with dynamite guest stars of the day, and in this episode you even get a peek at Mary Tyler Moore in a bit role before she was cast in The Dick Van Dyke show and became MARY TYLER MOORE. ;-)

Jane Wyman was the only eyewitness to a murder, and her testimony has just resulted in the culprit being convicted of Murder One. Immediately after the conclusion of the trial, strange and frightening events begin to happen, starting with a disturbingly altered magazine cover in her office.

She hires Checkmate to investigate, and they have to decide if the events are real, or a figment of her imagination. And if they're real, is she in danger, or being driven crazy ...

Intimidated witness
bkoganbing21 February 2016
Checkmate takes this case of an intimidated witness as a favor to their friend police lieutenant Ken Lynch. The witness in this case is Jane Wyman who had quite a view of a mob hit and the guy who did it. She testifies at the trial and he's duly convicted.

But that's where the story starts as a certain psychological warfare is used on Wyman. She has one very brittle psyche and we never really know whether the folks who ordered the hit did some research into her background.

Whether they did or didn't Wyman gives a great performance as Ms. Josephine Citizen who pays dear for being a good citizen. This plot gambit about making a witness think they're losing it and damage their credibility has been used a lot. Usually though it's during the trial.

Nevertheless Jane Wyman registers well as the intimidate witness who starts questioning her sanity.
