A Matter Of Pride
ccthemovieman-112 January 2012
Although it starts out and appears to be a story about memory, this is really a story about pride It begins with Toody forgetting something and Muldoon filling him. Heck, Muldoon is always doing that since he has just about a photographic memory. While he knows the dates of all the patrolmen's important days, the cops usually can't remember much of any of them.

That leads us to start of the joke. In Car 54 episodes, usually one joke snowballs into many until it gets ridiculous (and hopefully, very funny).

Here, the joke is that Gunther thinks it's his 10th anniversary of being Muldoon's partner (but, of course, it isn't). Toody says it's an important date and has Muldoon going nuts trying to figure it. Muldoon asks someone, who asks someone, who asks someone else, all the way from patrolmen to clerks to the commissioner to the governor. In each case, the men are too prideful to admit they don't know what important day this is....and just go along with it in generalities and make last-minute preparations.

The way I'm explaining it is not funny, but when you see all this played out it is humorous, and clever in some parts how this non-event can be made into something huge with no one the wiser.
