The spin-off that never happened
gregorycanfield21 March 2021
This episode was an obvious attempt at a spin-off series. The main problem is that the episode plays as if these "new" characters had already been established in the show. The multi-racial adoption seemed like a leap into All in the Family territory. In fact, the Brooke Bundy character makes a reference to Archie Bunker. The story is reasonably interesting, but doesn't quite click, due to the lack of familiarity with these characters. Also, Todd Lookinland is Mike's real-life brother. Too bad that they had no scenes together. Note to the other reviewers of this episode: the term "African-American" didn't exist when this show was made. If it's so important to be politically correct, you should know that political correctness itself didn't always exist.

Terrible
jonsjunk-26 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This was either an attempt at a spin-off or subplot, or a "vacation" show for the regular cast. Unfortunately, the jarring alternate plot will have you confused for the first few minutes and then bored the rest. There's no Brady-like chemistry in any of the new characters and the story is very vanilla. Also, the inclusion of a black boy and (as the show calls him) an Oriental boy, coupled with the ultra-conservative neighbor, is hamfisted even by Brady Bunch standards.

Worst episode ever

Just a terrible attempt for a spin-off pilot. This is such a cliche episode with a White, Asian and African American kid along with a prejudice neighbor. Terrible acting and a forced story line make for 30 minutes you wish you could have back.

Thank You for Highlighting Adoption

It is refreshing to see an episode with the focus on transracial adoption.

I liked it. It's very sweet, but not very Brady.

This episode opens up the world of the Bradys a bit, seeing them from the eyes of another family in the neighborhood. Ken and Kathy Kelly are really likable characters to spend 20 minutes with. Todd Lookinland (Mike Lookinland's brother) is really cute, and a really good little actor. The whole story about adoption is really sweet and warm. If you like the Brady Bunch, because of how nice the characters are, then you should enjoy this. This definitely isn't an episode about any of the Bradys, but it's not bad. Any minor Brady fan is probably aware of the backstory for this episode, it being that this was a backdoor pilot for a spinoff show, and I almost wished it happened. I mean, part of the reason most of us love the Bradys so much is because they are the brothers and sisters, mom and dad we all wanted as a kid, so it's easy for me to apply that imagination when spending 20 something minutes with the Kellys and their kids.
