3 on a manhunt
bkoganbing11 May 2020
Roscoe Lee Browne gives a powerful performance as a man whose grandson is shot and killed in a bank holdup in Virginia City. Michael Landon and Mitch Vogel were caught n the same holdup and all three go on a manhunt.

Browne dominates this episode one of the last in the series. Hard enough for a parent to lose a child, for grandparent when all they have are each other, just incalculable.

For Roscoe Lee Browne fans a must.

One of landons best.

Warning: Spoilers
I remember seeing this when it first appeared on network. The scene where Roscoe Lee Brownes grandchild dies in his arms dropping coins to the ground he raised to buy him a present stood out in my mind. It was such a heartfelt scene I remember crying over. No one could write a tearjerker better than Michael Landon. If you doubt this watch other shows he scripted including Forever, Don't Cry my Son, The Wish, The Sound of Sadness. Mitch Vogel did an excellent job as well he was growing into a good actor. I remember as a kid seeing some things on the screen and to this day remembered. Sunday night at 9 pm I had the TV in my room. I think Landon had an unofficial position as story editor the last 5 or 6 years on the show and you could see his writing on stories that were written by others.

A masterpiece for Bonanza, and as standalone episode
murermarius10 June 2022
One of the best episodes. Many Bonanza-episodes try to be serious and have many different actors trying to bring seriousness to it, but fail to bring it to a heightened level. This is one of the exceptions that manages to do that. Michael Landon gets his character flawlessly in this, and even Mitch Vogel, which i think doesn't hold much presense in Bonanza, is getting a more serious role and manages to find more presense, which is much needed for him.

The Handful of Roosevelt Dimes

Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler Alert! I recently watched this old episode for the first time and agree that the scene with the dying boy was touching. Unfortunately, the change that fell from his hand included all new coins. Somehow, this oversight of new quarters and dimes (with Franklin Roosevelt's profile) was very distracting and lessened the drama in this scene. While this wasn't one of Michael Landon's best efforts this early opportunity to write and direct was a tremendous opportunity for him to hone his craft and learn from these type of oversights. While this was a much later episode of Bonanza it still reminded me of the early years when this was a Sunday night staple! Submitted by nocluu
