A new commander for the Pegasus
Tweekums23 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
A month has passed since the events of the previous episode and there have been a few changes; President Roslin has a new assistant, Apollo and Dee are a couple and Pegasus is back with the fleet. The last of these provides the main story for this episode. After the deaths of Cain and then Frisk the Pegasus's senior engineering officer, Commander Garner, has taken command; the problem is he is used to working with machines rather than people. Not surprisingly it isn't long before he clashes with his new CAG: Starbuck. When two raptors disappear and a distress signal is heard Garner wants to go with the Pegasus to rescue them; Starbuck fears that the distress call might be a Cylon deception and Apollo is inclined to agree with her. Admiral Adama orders Garner to launch a reconnaissance patrol first but he takes the Pegasus anyway; right into a trap! As if this wasn't enough there is a secondary story concerning a young Geminon woman who has fled to Galactica to seek a termination. Roslin refuses to hand her back to the staunchly anti-abortion Geminese but the issue does remind her that the population is falling and if she wants to halt that she may have to give up her life long belief in a woman's right to choose.

This was a good episode with some good action; it was good to see a battlestar go up against the Cylons again. John Heard did a fine job as Commander Garner; portraying him as a good man who was out of his depth as a battlestar commander but had what it took to save his ship in the engine room. While the secondary story wasn't as thrilling it did deal with the issue of the falling population and lead to the emergence of a viable contender in the upcoming elections.

The Captain's Hand

Pegasus is not doing too well with its leaders.

After Cain and Fisk's deaths. Commander Garner (John Heard) has been promoted from the engine room.

However he seems to rub everyone the wrong way. He knows better attitude leads to danger as he even disobeys Admiral Adama's orders.

As for President Roslin. She has to grapple with the issue of abortion when a pregnant stowaway claims asylum.

Roslin is pro choice but recognises the need that the various ships need to increase the human population.

A good performance from guest star Heard as Garner. With that attitude, he would definitely be left home alone.

The abortion story felt rather clumsy.

As Of Now I Am A Candidate For The Presidency!

So at the start of this one Lee Adama shows off what a D-Bag he is when he locks a barracks to have sex with Dee. Both of them freshly celebrating the death of Billy. How considerate.

And then we get the main plot of this one. The Pegasus has a new commander, the chief engineer Garner is now commander. And of course he's even more of a punk than Fisk was. The writers sure don't like the Pegasus crew. Garner has it out for Starbuck and Apollo.

Abortion becomes a fleet wide issue. Roslyn doesn't want to ban it but oh dear it might cost her the Presidency! Like a real life moral conundrum in reverse!!!

And then, Baltar, the goofball 'genius' who really acts like a buffoon half the time and the other half he's staring at walls and talking to himself. He's going to run for President! This really wasn't a great ep either.

But in the end, Garner dies, Lee gets his first command. (I really hated to see John Heard who is so great, used so briefly.) Baltar announces he's running for President.

5/10.
