Don't hold your breath
kevinolzak13 May 2016
"Batman Stands Pat" begins with the Caped Crusader encased in a tomb of quick drying plaster, as Octave Marbot (Alberto Morin) uses his sculpting skills to crack it open, Batman alive and none the worse for wear, surviving by the simple act of holding his breath (yeah, right!). As for David Wayne's Mad Hatter, he enlists his gorgeous moll Lisa (Diane McBain) to pursue the only remaining juror not held captive, Turkey Bowinkle (George Conrad), who not only runs a bowling alley but wears a bowler hat, with Alfred (Alan Napier) enlisted to secure a Bat bugging device inside the label. The finale does indeed take place inside The Mad Hatter's demented hat factory, but the result isn't one he'd anticipated. Diane McBain continues the show's trend for sexy Bat babes, returning in pink wig for the Green Hornet crossover "A Piece of the Action"/"Batman's Satisfaction." David Wayne was a fine enough actor to put in a delightfully zesty performance despite his supposed dislike of the role, enjoyable enough to warrant a repeat appearance for the second season, "The Contaminated Cowl"/"The Mad Hatter Runs Afoul."

Loaded With Plaster, Not Shaken or Stirred

Warning: Spoilers
This series early episodes have made good use of the supporting cast and this one uses Bruce Wayne Butler going undercover to it's benefit. This i the first use of Alfred outside of explaining to Aunt Harriett where Bruce and Dick are going in such a hurry.

David Waynes plot to get Batman's Cowl as his 13th hat involves getting the dynamic duo into his hat factory to get physically mangled on his assembly line. It almost happens during a very physical bang and pow sequence but not quite. Wayne appears to be quite agile in the physical sequences.

We are still early in the series as not being shown yet in these episodes are the dynamic duo buckling their seat belts when they get in the Batmobile. That will come soon as this series fast start might be why that happened.

ACTION PACKED EPISODE
asalerno1028 June 2022
The Mad Hatter escapes from prison and begins to kidnap one by one the jurors who have testified against him and send him to prison. At the same time he sets up a trap for Batman to seize his cowl and add it to his collection of hats. David Wayne is great in the role of the Mad Hatter, the development of the episode is extremely dynamic and entertaining, at the end there is a big fight in the villain's diabolical hat factory.

Our Hat's Off To ...........................

Warning: Spoilers
STRONGLY FOLLOWING AND closing the story, this installment offers us some more originality.

AFTER THE CLIFFHANGER closing in the previous half-hour, THE THIRTEENTH HAT, we find Batman engulfed in quick drying plaster. When he is literally chiseled free, he explains his survival as being due to holding his breath.

THE USE OF Alfred the Butler in an undercover role in prosecuting the investigation and pursuit of the Mad Hatter & Gang. This is the first instance of exploiting Alan Napier's considerable talents beyond his duties in 'Stately Wayne Manor.'

IN MUCH THE same manner as those other early first season entries in the BATMAN Series, this story could stand on its own as a crime drama, without the element of "Camp Humor" that permeated the series.

WE WOULD ALSO wish to make note of some other names present in the cast. Miss Diane McBain is present in featured role of the gang's female member. Then there is Norma Vardon as a socialite patron in the hat boutique. Miss Vardon is a veteran of the cast of CASABLANCA (Warner Brothers, 1942), which is considered the number 2 all time American film behind CITIZEN KANE (RKO, 1942).

Batman Stands Pat

Batman is encased in plaster of Paris. Has he met his doom or have a hat trick of narrow escapes? The caped crusader better hold his breath.

Finally Batman and Robin figure out why the Mad Hatter was looking for 12 people and 12 hats. It needed the help of the batcomputer. That is the number of jurors.

Those people who found the Mad Hatter guilty are going to come face to face with the headcase they sent down.

The Mad Hatter still has his contraptions. He will lift Batman's cowl and then send him to be hatfitted. Maybe an acid bath, no joke.

The writers struggled with the hat jokes. The puns and jokes were weak. So it was up to Batman and Robin th throw themselves into the fight scenes.
