Team Angel's on the run
katierose2956 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This isn't my favorite episode of the season, but it's still pretty fun. It starts the destruction of Jasmine, finally giving Team Angel a way to (possibly) fight her. And it paints Conner further into the Black Hat corner, which will play into the season finale. Plus, its got some nice little moments with Team Angel reacting to all their problems and facing some of their mistakes. Anyway, if you're watching the season you should shouldn't skip "Sacrifice."

"Sacrifice" revolves around Team Angel trying to escape Jasmine. Angel fights off Conner and Team Angel escape in his car. Not knowing where to go, the decide to get out of town so that they can warn the rest of the world about Jasmine. First they need some gas, though. Jasmine's followers attack them and Team Angel winds up hiding in the sewers. There, they meet up with a group of people who've been hiding underground since the sun went out. They tell Team Angel that a spidery demon is picking them off one at a time. Eager for a nice demon fight to distract them, Team Angel agrees to help kill it. Soon, though it's taken Wes captive. Plus, a little boy in the group, Matt, finds out that Angel is a vampire and runs off.

Angel goes after Wes. Gunn & Fred go after Matt. Unfortunately Matt is exposed to "Jasmine's love" and she quickly discovers where Team Angel is hiding. She sends Conner and a bunch of military guys after them. She also moves Cordy out of the Hyperion so no one else can have access to her blood. Meanwhile, Wes is discovering some interesting things about the spider demon. Like it comes from a dimension that Jasmine ruled for thousands of years. He questions the demon about her and soon realizes that Jasmine can be destroyed if they say her real name. Angel arrives and kills the demon. Wes finds a portal-making-orb-thing that opens a doorway to the demon's world. There's no oxygen, so only Angel can go, though. Gunn, Lorne and Fred dash in with Conner and Jasmine's goons close behind. Wes tells Angel that he must go through the portal so at least one of them will survive to stop Jasmine. Angel reluctantly leaves and finds himself in a world full of spider demons.

There are some good parts to this episode. I like Wes trying to reason with the spider-y demon. He's talking to it like it's a four year old on the verge of a temper tantrum, which is pretty funny. And I'm glad Fred and Gunn finally talked about the dead professor. It's been festering between them and they had to discuss it. Also, I like the scene at the gas station, where all of Jasmine's followers starts attacking Team Angel and speaking in Jasmine's voice. "Okay, that's creepy." Gunn mutters. Plus, you just have to laugh when the government and churches begin disbanding so they can give all their power to "She Who Walks Among Us." Finally, it's kinna cool that Jasmine put Cordelia in a coma, but in the end it's Cordy who's gonna be the key to bringing Jasmine down with her blood. Go Cordy!

Team Angel thinks Angel's attitude is a little cold in this episode, but I disagree. He's grieving for Cordy and frustrated at leaving Conner behind. When Fred says that they should bring Conner and Cordy with them Angel says no. That they have to stop thinking with their emotions and survive. Yet, when Wes is taken by that spidery thing, Angel goes after him. When Matt asks who's blood Angel has on his hands (Conner's), Angel just says that it belongs to someone who tried to hurt his friends. The spider demon tells Wes that love is sacrifice, which is also the title of the episode. I think the show's trying to say that Angel is sacrificing FOR love and also sacrificing HIS love. He's walked away from the two people he loves most: Conner and Cordy, in a way sacrificing them to Jasmine, because he has to protect the world. But he's still feels love. Angel went searching for Wes and beat Conner, because he loves his friends so deeply. Wes has to force Angel through the portal at the end of the episode by reminding him about the fate of the world. Angel sacrifices everything he has, his whole family, when he leaves. He isn't being heartless in this episode. If anything he's feeling too much.

On the down side, have I mentioned that I hate Conner? Because, I REALLY hate him in this episode. Also, I wish that Team Angel had stayed in the car a little longer because we don't get many scenes of all of them trapped together like that. It was fun. Plus, I think that this is the last time we see Angel's "real" car and I miss it when it's gone.

My favorite part of the episode: Lorne asking Team Angel, "Does anybody else feel like the last spunky wife in Stepford?" It just makes me laugh every time.

Going underground

Warning: Spoilers
SACRIFICE

The Good; The Critter in the sewers rather like Golum crossed with a giant tarantula and is truly scary. Gotta say I'm getting a little tired of the Jasmine storyline and I'll be glad when it's over

The Bad; Jasmine's real face looks obviously rubber although the genuine maggots distract you from that. Again seems a huge coincidence that Angel and co fall into the sewers and discover just what they need. Once again the PTBs at work? I actually think that once they go down the sewers the whole ep withers. But the ending picks it up again mightily. Despite Gunn's comment we see exactly 2 police cars and a spotlight with some helicopter sound effects.

Best line; Gunn; "I ain't never seen so many (police) cruisers" Wes; "Well technically we're the only criminals left"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? The vamp in the web, especially when it gets it tongue ripped out!

Apocalypses: 5

Angel Clichés Inverting the Hollywood cliché; when Connor and his troops arrive Gunn remarks 'Time for the big fight scene!' echoing what the audience is thinking. Lorne's 'don't judge by appearances' scene cruelly shot down by the refugees.

In disguise; 8

DB get's his shirt off; 12

Cheap Angel; 6

Fang Gang in bondage: Cordy: 5 Angel: 14 Wes: 6 Gunn; 4 Lorne; 4 Fred; 2

Gunn; 11 vamps+ 13 demons, 5 zombies, 1 human. Groo; 1 demon Fred; 3 vamps+ 2 demon, 5 zombies Connor; 16 vamps, 5 zombies, 2 demons

Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 3 Angel: 3 Gunn; 1 Wes; 1

Alternate Fang Gang; Cordy: 4 Angel: 11 Fred; 2 Wes; 1 Gunn; 1 Connor; 1

Characters killed: 255

Recurring characters killed; 9;

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 5 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast+Phantom Dennis+Groo+Connor plus possibly the Beast Angel: 5; Buffy, Darla and The Transcending Furies Wes; 3 definite; Virginia, the bleached blonde and Lilah, 1 possible, Justine Gunn; 2 Fred and Gwen. Fred; 1 Gunn Groo; 1Cordy

Kinky dinky: Whereas the previous people Jasmine consumed were ordinary looking (and the director even commented on it) now it seems to be only pretty young things in their skimpy undies that Jasmine devours.

Know the face, different character; 4

Parking garages; 6,

Guantanamo Bay; The Catholic Church is now dedicated to Jasmine and the governor (Schwarzeneger yet?) has handed over his administration to her.

Buffy characters on Angel; 16 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, The Master, Anne, Willow and Harmony. POSSIBLY The First Evil

Questions and observations; You almost get the feeling that this was getting towards to the end of the season and the budget was running out so they said 'Hey let's put the entire ep in those old tunnel sets, that'll save us enough money for some Lord of the Rings CGI'. Still some nice stuff with the bug and a great climatic cliffhanger.

Lorne mentions that he heard Belieze was nice which is where Riley has been killing demons in seasons 5/6 of Buffy.

Quite honestly do the words 'and the National Guard' ever signify anything good? When the National Guard turn up it's normally a signal that things really can't get much worse. I suppose if you were under fire in Vietnam and some National Guard troops came to help you then it would be a good thing?

I take it it's Connor's blood on Angel's hands? Unless someone can correct me the last we'll ever see of Angel's convertible? Note that at the beginning of the ep Angel is holding off the horde at the door to enable his friends to escape and at the end the situation is reversed.

Marks out of 10; 7/10

Life in the Sewers
Samuel-Shovel15 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In "Sacrifice", after opening the eyes of the rest of the gang (sans Connor), Fred and everyone flee the hotel, taking refuge in the sewers to avoid the legions of Jasmine's followers. They find a group of vamp hunters not yet affected by Jasmine's charms, being down there since the sun was blotted out. They face off with a demon that has been encroaching on their space. Wes interacts with it and learns that it's from the dimension that originally worshiped the entity they called Jasmine. He learns that the only way to hurt her is to discover her real name, unknown to all except the high priest in this demon's homeland. Angel kills the demon and uses an orb to escape an army led by Connor and head to to the demon's dimension. The rest of the gang battle Connor and a group of Jasmine followers as the episode ends.

We now only have two episodes left to the season and the picture is becoming clearer. I assume next episode will revolve around Angel's journey to discover Jasmine's tue identity and the season finale will be his triumphant return and battle to destroy her. We shall see. But we leave the rest of the gang in a perilous spot with no real way out to be seen. It's possible Connor has a change of heart and defends them as it seems he's starting to have his doubts.

I liked the demon's design in this one. I also enjoyed the concept of a few people hiding out from the vamps still milling around the sewers. It's nice when they tie plot thickens together like that. Overall, an average episode but it keeps us moving towards the finale.

Oh, god, are we dead yet?
SleepTight66628 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
What an episode, so much gore, violence, darkness. Do I need to go on? The Jasmine-arc really gets better by episode, the body-snatching is what I mostly loved about this one. The Spider-Demon (Played by Jeff Ricketts) was also a major highlight, I loved his scenes with 'Wesley' and when he was tearing up that poor vampire. My favorite scene was the one with 'Jasmine' and 'Connor' about his pain, some great acting from Gina Torres and Vincent Kartheiser. The ending was also kind of epic - Time for the big fight scene, and 'Angel' ending up in a world filled with Spider Monsters. What a fun episode. JASMINE: There's a part of you that you've kept from me, your pain. CONNOR: I don't understand. JASMINE: Pain has been the only constant in your life, the one thing that has never abandoned you. You think that pain is yours to keep and bear alone. But it's not. I want it. I want everything you are. Connor, father, let it go. Let me have it. (10 out of 10)
