★★★☆☆ With such a broad and sweeping title, When China Met Africa (2010) is an ambitious project to undertake by sibling filmmakers Nick and Marc Francis, who wrote, produced and directed this venture. Attempting to investigate the implications of China's expensive investment in Africa's economy in exchange for its natural resources, the Francis brothers cleverly narrow their focus to one country and to three men seeking to gain from the partnership in different ways.
Mr. Liu is an opportunistic Chinese entrepreneur, who bought and developed a plot of land in northern Zambia, cultivated it into a farm and hired local Zambians to tend it. With the help of his family, he now owns and runs four farms and plans to buy a fifth. Not oil, but coffee!
I received another email from California Newsreel, alerting us that the full-length documentary, Black Gold, is available for free online viewing through the end of this month, so you’re encouraged to head over there and watch it!
In short, the 2006, 77-minute Black Gold traces the complex, conflicted trail from the two billion cups of coffee consumed each day around the world, back to the tens-of-thousands of Ethiopian coffee farmers who produce the beans, and the efforts of 1 man, Tadesse Meskela, campaigning to get a living wage for the many farmers he represents.
“Black Gold provides the most in-depth study of any commodity on film today and offers a compelling introduction to the ‘fair trade’ movement galvanizing consumers around the globe.”
The 2002 film was produced and directed by Marc Francis and Nick Francis.

The Valentine’s Day soundtrack. Valentine’s Day is one of those all-star portmanteau affairs – a strain of film-making until recently regarded as the fluff sitting in the cinematic navel, but which now seems to be undergoing a minor revival. Why is that? Because they’re cheap to churn out and make plenty of cash. While it might have barely registered with the frenzied sentinels of geek who maintain such aggressive guard over the internet movie news agenda, last year’s He’s Just Not That Into You (its intersecting relationship-based narratives, big-name cast, and presence of smuggy smug smug smug Bradley Cooper designating it as the obvious precursor to Valentine’s Day) managed to squirrel up nearly as much green at the box-office as the hyped to the seven heavens Watchmen, and on a fraction of the budget too.

CBS has given the official go-ahead to a remake of its classic 1970s cop series "Hawaii Five-o."
The pilot, from "Star Trek" and "Fringe" writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and "CSI: NY" executive producer Peter Lenkov, will be an updated version of the original series, about a state police unit in Honolulu. The show got a preliminary order in the fall, and it's now been given the Ok to begin production, the showbiz trade papers report.
CBS has had the project on its mind for a while. It first took a swing at a remake in 2008 with "Criminal Minds" executive producer Ed Bernero, then got into business with Orci, Kurtzman and Lenkov last year.
- Elsewhere in pilot-land, NBC's "Undercovers" has added to its cast, and Fox has greenlit a pair of projects.

Tonight’s episode begins with the Cbi team being called to a graveyard very early in the morning where a body was found. Under normal circumstances, finding a body in a graveyard might be a normal occurrence. This body, however, was recently frozen into a pose and placed in a mausoleum naked, with a vase of flowers between his legs – certainly puzzling.
Meanwhile back at the Cbi offices, Bosco and his team are burning the midnight oil on the Red John case. Rebecca, Bosco’s secretary, is asked to go get them coffee.
When the others arrive back at the office in the morning, they stumble upon a gruesome crime scene — Bosco and three of the Cbi agents on his team have been shot. Only Bosco is still barely clinging to life as Jane and Lisbon scramble to get him help.

Bosco and his team raid a house where a kidnapper is allegedly holding a hostage, but when they break in, the Cbi team is who they find. On the floor is a mummified corpse wrapped in plastic. As the shock wears off, a surprised Jane asks the team to “lower the guns, please.”
Back at the Cbi headquarters, each group explains to the other why they showed up at the house. Bosco’s team was led to the house by the trail of a missing heiress. Lisbon and her team showed up after getting a call from the coroner that a body was in the house. It just so happens that this body was of a kidnapped man from a wealthy family. (S02E06) "No takebacks!" - Jane, to the killer, about her confession
So this episode had two things that scare the hell out of me: prison and mice. I think we all view prison as a place that would freak us out if we ever found ourselves in one. I hate the very thought of being in that situation. I think I'd try to escape like Jane did tonight. What's the worst that could happen, they'd send you to prison?
As for mice, I have a few every winter in my apartment. They come in through the wall behind the fridge looking for warmth and food. Really irritating and gross.
And this episode had both of those things. Gah.

Tonight on The Mentalist, "Black Gold and Red Blood", Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) once again defies people's expectations. After Agent Bosco (Terry Kinney) discovers the bug that Jane planted in his office, he has Jane arrested. As usual, Jane isn't remorseful in the least bit and doesn't seem to be all that fearful about jail time. Turning down Bosco's deal to quit the Cbi, Jane heads off to the penitentiary. Not considering himself a cop, Jane refuses protective custody and gets put in with the general population.
Once we get a look at Jane's murderer roommate, if we weren't already thinking it, we get the idea Jane may have made a serious error. After all, Jane is very pretty and not at all violent, which is not the best combination in prison. Though Jane makes friends with his cellmate with a little psychotherapy, he realizes he may have been a...

Kate Bosworth is taking a turn on the other side of the camera - as a producer. The Cohasset star has bought the rights to 'Lost Girls and Love Hotels' - a novel by Catherine Harahan about a girl going missing in Japan, and is now throwing herself into the 'process'. Speaking at the 2009 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, Kate said; "I bought the rights to a book called Lost Girls and Love Hotels, and I've just had a wonderful writer adapt it. Now we're in the stage of finding a director and building it up from the ground up. It's a lot of work but we're going to do it." Kate's been madly busy recently, as she occupied the front rows of numerous shows at New York Fashion Week - including Diesel Black Gold and British label, Preen. She also upped her fashion credentials at the Oscar Party in her mermaid-effect Alexander McQueen gown.

Spooky, timeless Americana
Maybe it’s because they’re from the other Athens—the one in Ohio—that Southeast Engine’s fourth album sounds so out of time, and so removed from current musical fads and trends. The freak-folk tendencies, biblical allusions and poetic nature imagery could have originated in 2009, 1969 or 1869, for that matter. Musically, lead singer/songwriter Adam Remnant’s cracked tenor and the heavily reverbed organ work suggest Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy fronting Elvis Costello’s Attractions. But the songwriting—starting with a 10-minute three-part suite featuring dancing ghost maidens, a shimmering white dress that floats on air, and what sounds like a mystical vision of heaven and the hand of the Almighty reaching down from the clouds—is what ultimately wins me over. Remnant’s vision is so utterly singular, weird and compelling that you’ll stick around for this mapless journey. God only knows where they’re going,...

For the past few weeks we’ve been supplying our female fashionistas with a weekly dose of blogging inspiration, however we don’t want to neglect our testosterone-fuelled male Boxwishers and so have selected a piece of manly gorgeousness for this Wednesday’s entry. We’ve long been fans of absolutely everything owned by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in summer blockbuster Iron Man and have regularly given shout-outs to all of his plush playboy purchases. From gadgets (the Celestron CPC1100 telescope) to cars (Audi R8, AC Shelby Cobra and Saleen S7 to name but three), he has it all and this impeccable taste extends to his wardrobe. Behold the cool leather jacket he wears for his flight to Afghanistan and we’ve found a fantastic lookalike.
Part of “Black Gold” the new collection from Italian fashion label Diesel, it is a black round-necked biker jacket made from 100 per cent leather.

- Sam Riley and Anton Corbijn should pack lite on November 28th as Control, by far the best Brit indie film of the year, leads the way in terms of noms for the 10th at the British Independent Film Awards. And When Did You Last See Your Father? has also received a fair share of noms with 7, followed by Hallam Foe with six and Eastern Promises with five. Newcomer Sam Riley is a shoe-in for the acting and most promising newcomer awards, although it would be a treat to see Kierston Wareing take something home for her bit in Ken Loach's It's a Free World.... The jury comprises actors Hayley Atwell, Archie Panjabi, Kathy Burke, Tony Curran, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Matthew Macfadyen; directors Annie Griffin, Menhaj Huda, Neil Marshall and Peter Webber; London Film Festival artistic director Sandra Hebron; producer Mark Herbert; cinematographer Brian Tufano; distributor Will Clarke; and musician Nitin Sawhney.

- Black Gold Click here to read the review! "In theory, profit sharing is a beautiful notion – of course that all depends on who you ask. Black Gold takes a critical, yet more humane look into where the bucks stops and while its not as unflattering as Darwin’s Nightmare, coffee lovers will either want to stay away from these truths or at least ask themselves – where does my four dollar cup of coffee come from and has the lady in the green cap with the phony smile asked herself that same question?"...
