Angus Scrimm, beloved horror veteran, character actor, and former album liner notes writer, has died today at the age of 89, Entertainment Weekly reported earlier. Scrimm's longtime friend Don Coscarelli confirmed the news. Coscarelli directing Scrimm in the Phantasm series, in addition to John Dies At The End, the Masters of Horror episode "Incident On And Off A Mountain Road," and Jim, The World's Greatest. Scrimm was a Glass Eye Pix productions regular, having appeared in films such as I Sell The Dead, Satan Hates You, and The Off Season, as well as in the popular Tales From Beyond The Pale radio plays. Scrimm also had a recurring role on the TV series Alias, possibly because J.J. Abrams is a noted Phantasm fan (Abrams is restoring the film). According to IMDb,...

Regardless of how you feel about horror anthology films, it’s obvious that they aren’t going anywhere. And why would they? The format allows for nascent filmmakers to flex their chops on a short segment before feeling the pressure of a full feature; and given that the short story is the most prominent and effective form of horror (just look at the masters: Poe, Lovecraft, Matheson), it also provides the opportunity to experience these tales visually without stretching them thin to reach standard film length. It’s like reading a literary magazine from cover to cover: different styles, different effects, different scares. I’m all for it.
Our friends over at Reel Progress are working straight from literary short stories for their new anthology film Creepers. Check out the full press release.

Director, writer, producer, and actor Larry Fessenden has slogged his way to becoming a prominent force in the horror genre over the course of more than two decades. His first film to really start turning heads was the provocative thriller No Telling (1991). He secured his place on the horror film map by writing, directing, and starring in the gritty vampire nightmare Habit (1995), which was followed by Wendigo (2001) and The Last Winter (2006).
His acting roles have ranged from brief glimpses in films like Martin Scorsese's Bringing Out The Dead (1999), Brad Anderson's Session 9 (2001), Jim Jarmusch's Broken Flowers (2005), and Neil Jordan’s The Brave One (2007), to leading roles in Glenn McQuaid's I Sell The Dead (2008) and Chad Crawford Kinkle's Jug Face (2013). Fessenden can also be spotted in this year's You’re Next, directed by Adam Wingard, Hellbenders, directed by J.T. Petty, and We Are What We Are,...

Word on a new project from MonsterPants, the New York-based, do-it-yourself non-studio behind such films as Satan Hates You and Hypothermia, landed in our inbox this week; and it's so unique and intriguing we just had to share!
From the Press Release:
MonsterPants is proud to announce its latest film project, "Chapter Four," the first episode in a ten-part online serial written and directed by Diy auteur James Felix McKenney (Automatons, Hypothermia). For now, the name of the entire serial is to remain a mystery. Each episode of this dark science fiction thriller will carry its own title, simply that of the number of the chapter.

Indie horror director Larry Fessenden (Wendigo, Habit) has been producing films at a decent clip in the last few years and Hypothermia is one of the latest projects he has overseen. From director James Felix McKenney, who also helmed Satan Hates You, comes a simple story of the Pelletier family who go out for a day of relaxing ice fishing that becomes a nightmare.
Not only do they discover a strange creature under the ice, but a loudmouthed and opinionated ice fisher and his son make things even worse for the family. Here is when the old monster movie trope of “What’s the bigger danger, the ‘Other’ or your fellow humans?” rears its ugly head.

Ho Ho Yikes! This year Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film is breaking up its annual Underground Holiday Shopping Guide into a couple of different posts by genre. That way it’s easier to really match up your loved one’s entertainment tastes with the best that the underground has to offer!
First up: If there’s a special someone you know who’s bored with traditional blood and scares, here are some outrageous fright flicks that will make them scream with delight when they see them under the tree.
New on DVD:Strange Girls
One of Bad Lit’s favorite horror flicks of the past five years finally made it to DVD in 2011. In her debut feature, filmmaker Rona Mark created two of the most original on-screen murderers in Virginia and Georgia Gruczechy — twin, socially-reclusive, psychotic girls with their own invented language who kill anyone who they think is deserving.

Already acquired by Mpi Media Group (Dark Sky Films), we landed a pretty awesome creature stills from James Felix McKenney's Hypothermia, the latest genre effort from producers Glass Eye Pix (Innkeepers, Stake Land, House of the Devil, Roost, Satan Hates You, I Sell the Dead, Bitter Feast and dozens more. Starring Michael Rooker, Blanche Baker, Greg Finley, Don Wood, Ben Forster and Amy Chang, imagine Jaws under the ice, imagine terror at 20 degrees below freezing... "In a remote winter hideaway devoid of any sign of life, two unsuspecting families on an ice-fishing vacation discover something sinister lurking in the frozen lake. One thing is for certain - the creature is hungry and the only prey left is human." Hypothermia is a classic monster movie in the tradition of The Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Remember that cartoon staple of the angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other? James Felix McKenney’s new film, Satan Hates You, is a darkly comic, and ironically unfunny twist on that idea with not much else going on, and it’s a shame.
He has managed to waste genre favorites Michael Berryman (as an overly moralistic hotel clerk) Debbie Rochon (a bad girl gone good), Reggie Bannister (a seamy bar owner), and Angus Scrimm (a telev”angel”ist) in a series of throwaway roles that would be better suited to sketches or short films instead of a feature length film that doesn’t really have enough story to tell.
This is meant to be a satiric take on Christian propaganda films, but don’t they really make fun of themselves? The movie tells the dual stories of Marc and Wendy, two “sinners” who are pushed to...

MonsterPants, the New York-based, do-it-yourself non-studio that brought us such films as Automatons, Satan Hates You, and the upcoming Hypothermia from Glass Eye Pix and Dark Sky Films, is going beyond movies and comics with a new line of handmade limited-run toys and apparel by writer/director/artist James Felix McKenney. Get your credit cards out, kids, because this stuff is very cool!
From the Press Release:
"I love toys as much as I do movies and comic books," says McKenney, a life-long toy fan and collector. "They take up more room in my home than everything else I own. After all these years of collecting, I decided to try my hand at making some figures of my own."
The series of hand-made plastic resin figures are all designed, sculpted, cast, painted, and packaged by McKenney. "I'm not going to even attempt to recreate the polish of factory-made commercial or designer toys,...

The star-studded ultra-gory Satan Hates You has a DVD cover for us to enjoy. The film is coming from cult label Danger After Dark on October 10th. James Felix McKenny of Automation fame directs.
Dubbed “a clever collision of flamboyant gore and social commentary” by Variety, the over-the-top shocker follows Marc (Don Wood), a homicidal maniac driven by demons buried deep within his soul, and Wendy (Christine Spencer), a young girl who lives life fast and hard without a second’s thought to the consequences. Their separate paths will eventually cross, but will it be on the road to salvation or the highway to hell?
Tla President Derek Curl said: “We couldn’t think of a better title to re-launch Danger After Dark with. Satan Hates You has all the makings of a true cult classic, and we can’t wait to bring it to the fans.”

Hard to say for certain whether or not Satan Hates You will turn out to be anything more than a bunch of forced humor and a pile of stunt casting. I'll be honest, it certainly appears that way. But I'm curious to give it a whirl and, admittedly, today's look at the DVD cover art is pretty awesome.

If it’s mid-summer, then it’s time for filmmakers to start thinking about their 2012 film festival runs. Yep, several fests are already opening up their submission process. A few weeks ago, Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film reported that the 50th annual Ann Arbor Film Festival was already looking for films. Little Big Boy is, to say the least, a film like no other. It tells the story of acclaimed horror film director Jimmy Duncan, famous for his hot temper aswell as his very exploitative movies. Having witnessed the murder of his mother at the age of seven, Duncan grows up at an orphanage and as an adult works his way up in the movie industry.
Caught up in the downward spiral of his own success surrounded by movie reviewers who refuse to acknowledge his obvious talent, starlet wannabes with absolutely no talent, producers with little patience and people who will do anything and exploit anyone to become famous in an industry where you can count on no-one, we follow Jimmy while working on his fourth feature film “Death Stalker”, which quickly turns into a descent into complete and utter madness as his leading lady leaves the production halfway through the shooting.

Max Brooks is widely known for his best-selling success with the books World War Z and The Zombie Survival Guide, but he had previously dabbled in acting with TV and cartoon voice-over roles. He’s next going before the cameras in The Girl From Mars, the latest feature from Satan Hates You and Hypothermia’s James Felix McKenney.
In the sci-fi comedy, Brooks (who made his screen debut in dad Mel’s 1983 comedy To Be Or Not To Be) will play an anchorman in a series of recurring television broadcasts within the movie. Pauley Perrette of TV’s NCIS stars as a girl who claims to be from the Red Planet and changes the life of a lonely nerd. “I’m always excited to work with Jim!” says Brooks, who previously cameoed as another TV newsman in Satan Hates You. His wife, playwright Michelle Kholos Brooks, will co-star in The Girl From Mars as well.

Among current independent auteurs, James Felix McKenney has built one of the most eclectic filmographies in the genre, drawing from a variety of inspirations. After starting out with the zombie opus Canniballistic!, he moved into haunted-place territory with The Off Season, then homaged ’50s sci-fi cheapies with Automatons. His latest, Satan Hates You (starting a one-week New York City run today at the reRun Gastropub Theater), is modeled on the Christian scare films of the ’60s and ’70s.

I know there has to be some geeks out there who are fans of Pauley Perrette, who plays Abby Sciuto on the CBS television series, NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service. She’s the Goth girl/forensic specialist who was once described by another character on the show as “a paradox wrapped in an oxymoron smothered in contradictions in terms. Sleeps in a coffin. Really, the happiest goth you’ll ever meet.”
Outside of NCIS, Perrette does a couple other dashes of geek cred, having lent her voice in one episode of the animated series, Batman Beyond and more recently playing Ramona, a virtual alter ego in a documentary hybrid film based on Ray Kurzweil’s book, The Singularity is Near.
Now, Perrette will be taking a lead role in The Work Room Productions‘ next film, The Girl From Mars. Check out their release below for all the details.

Underground films cleaned up at the newly re-christened Syracuse International Horror, Science-Fiction & Fantasy Film Festival, with Drew Bolduc and Dan Nelson’s The Taint and Stuart Simpson‘s El Monstro Del Mar! taking home top awards.
Formerly known as the B-Movie Film Festival, the 11th annual edition of the fest was held on Nov. 20-21 and screened nine genre-themed films, plus a block of shorts.
The Australian El Monstro Del Mar! has been winning awards all over the underground film circuit, including taking home prizes at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival, the Sydney Underground Film Festival and the Royal Flush Film Festival. And, thanks to Spooky Movie, which screened the film in October, I was able to see this gem of a monster movie throwback and can say it’s getting all the accolades it deserves.
The Taint has had a more modest success in the underground, but its reputation appears to be growing.
