A must-see.

The current problems the world faces -- from Brittany Spears' new haircut to thermonuclear bombs -- fade into insignificance alongside the questions raised by UFOs.

Peter Jennings' report presents both sides of the controversy, which, at times, seems more a war of words and prejudices than a rational exchange of opinions. Most of the prejudice seems to lie with the one or two thorough-going skeptics who argue, aptly enough, that eye-witness testimony is liable to be faulty. They will settle for nothing less than physical evidence, of the sort one of them calls "a wheel assembly, a ball point pen from their dashboard." (Joke.) Fine, but it demeans the other side by trivializing their position. It's not a serious way of addressing the question, because there's no reason to believe -- if UFOs actually are extraterrestrial -- that they will be so accommodating.

But -- and here's what I mean when I say the skeptics are more prejudiced than the "believers" -- the skeptics assume that the believers are convinced that UFOs are from some distant planet. The problem is that none of them takes that position. The skeptics have closed minds, while their opponents do not. And having an open mind is the essence of science, though you don't need to be a scientist to have an open mind. You just have to avoid being colossally arrogant.

I don't recall any of the believers claiming that the things they witnessed were definitely flying saucers from outer space. The most common opinion among them was simply that what they saw was a UFO because it was "unidentifiable",it was "flying," and it appeared to be an "object." But I'm afraid my opinion may be biased because of some personal experience a long time ago with something that was no explainable in any terms we know. I wouldn't call it an "object" though, just a "thing" in the sense of something that was there.

Many of the scientists make a common logical error by trying to show something like interstellar travel is impossible according to what we know. (I was a behavioral scientist myself for many years.) Interstellar travel is impossible, they say, because Einstein proved that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, and so it would take at least 70,000 years to reach the nearest star. This kind of conclusion is what's known as "theory dependent." It assumes Einstein's theory is correct and that nothing new about light or its speed will ever be discovered. If that assumption is wrong, then so is the conclusion. It's an elementary mistake and they should know better.

In the end, who knows what these things are? Maybe not objects at all but thoughts in the mind of God. Anyone interested in looking at some reports written by the witnesses themselves should check out nuforc.com, the National UFO Reporting Center. NURFORC consists of one man, some tape recorders, and a few telephones. It's a small enterprise but he happens to be the only person in the USA at the moment who is recording UFO sightings and investigating any.

The two-hour TV program is comprehensive, easily understood, and essential viewing for anyone who's curiosity extends beyond his body sheath.

The quintessential ufo documentary
nickenchuggets1 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This documentary is something that is especially close to me since I used to have it recorded on my dvr about 10 years ago and would always rewatch it. It goes through the history of ufo sightings in the US starting with the late 1940s and the early 50s when many of the people in the government were legitimately worried about them, mainly due to the fact that it was the start of the cold war and they could be top secret soviet planes coming to bomb american cities. Having an adversary with such ridiculous speed and agility as whatever these things were ensured that the government took it seriously, but it soon became obvious that nothing made by humans behaved like ufo's. The program also features many of modern science's most famous personalities, such as Neil Degrasse Tyson and Michio Kaku, which helps give us some more insight about how rich the universe could be with life. Also featured are various interviewees that are just ordinary civilians, which highlights the fact that these unusual sightings can happen to anyone, night or day. The excellent narration provided by the late Peter Jennings also goes over the US air force's 2 decade long study on ufo's called "Project Blue Book", which is detested by some members of the interview cast since it attempts to discredit ufo sightings as just "stars" or strange weather formations; Whatever it takes to get people to stop focusing on the flying objects. Later on, it goes into detail about the infamous Roswell incident in 1947, when apparently one of the greatest discoveries of all time was made. A US army major finds debris from what he thinks is a crashed alien spaceship, only to be humiliated the very next day when his superior officer tells him it's nothing more than a weather balloon. Shockingly, the public accepted the explanation at the time mainly because it was right after world war 2 and the government was considered trustworthy. The program also mentions how the ufo craze in the 50s was being eaten up by the public in the form of classic movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still and War of the Worlds. After watching this, it is hard not to wonder about our place in the universe and how absurd it sounds to think we are alone. Surely the conditions that allowed for humans to exist on earth should have happened somewhere else in the vastness of space, and it seems probable that somewhere there are other planets just like earth where life exists. This documentary might make some people believe.

Extreme Exellence
dre-velation201220 August 2006
This report I saw very recently, and a while back. I just saw this report this weekend, Aug 19th. It seemed like a "remixed" and enhanced version of the one I saw a while ago. Anyway, It was really really great!! I considered myself a believer of UFO's, kinda like a blind believer who really wants to believe but is realistic and has never actually seen one for himself. So, after watching this special, it was like therapy! I realized that it just in fact may be this massive cultural subliminal mental layer of beyondness that people absolutely Need as part of the human experience, probably from the beginning of time to the End! Yup, this special ufo report was just that for me. I still want to believe and really do think that "they" are out there, but now, there's a new layer of psychology enfused in my mind that brings me that much closer to sanity. :) Thanks Pete.
