slow and nothing to offer
trashgang5 September 2013
This movie was over 6 years old when it was finally released in Europe under the better title 'Rape And Revenge'. Even the cover used looked promising for horror buffs but sadly that was all that was amusing.

This flick really has nothing to offer. It all looked really tame and the story didn't evolve either. The girls being captured were never tortured, they were only sitting there on a bed, handcuffed. Sure, there's some rape going on but even that was low standard. In fact, the overall look of this flick was low budget. A lot of scene's were to dark, clearly they didn't use extra lighting. It is also based on a true event but that I don't believe either. Following serial killers closely I can't see on what fact it's based although there are a lot of stories about girls used as sex slaves.

No red stuff, no nudity, no nothing in this slowly moving boring flick. And you were warned, it's stated on the sleeve of the DVD, You Were Warned By The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' well You've Been Warned by me now, don't go watching this.

No good

Warning: Spoilers
The movie starts with some text on screen about the business of sex slavery, then tells us that they story is based on real events.

We get see a Latin girl kidnapped in a car who manages to escape her captors. Then we meet some alcoholic who has take a trip to meet his wife. There is also a young couple driving around the country. They are deceived into stopping and two criminals kill the guy and kidnap the girl. They tie her up in a room in a house. Meanwhile the alcoholic runs into the Latin girl, who kills a cop by accident. He runs around the night and ends up at the house of the kidnappers who take him to the Sheriff. Meanwhile, the mother of the other kidnapped girl is looking for her, complains to the sheriff, and ends up getting kidnapped herself. It all ends with a good old-fashioned shoot-out. There is a minor but expected twist about who else is a bad guy here and who is not.

While I summarized all the action, all this takes place very slowly, with countless instances of the bad guys verbally abusing the women or threatening them. There's nothing interesting happening or anything that would make you look forward to what will happen next. A major problem are the characters. Apparently the alcoholic is supposed to be the main character but he's an unreliable good-for-nothing. So we can't sympathize with him all that much. Not to mention that he just sort of stumbles in and out of scenes without contributing much to the story. The bad guys do a good job at being bad but aren't interesting either. The girls are usually gagged and we know nothing about them. So there's no character to care for or anything in the story to look forward to. It's all rather dull The movie was filmed in Texas apparently, but with cheap equipment. Night and dark shots are terrible, one can barely see anything. Day shots are good, and the acting is good as well. But I really can't find a reason to recommend this movie.

A soft core Grindhouse flick that just needs a drive-in to play it
bob_meg3 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Red Ridge is an extremely hard film to objectively review.

The script is a mixed bag. On one hand, you have clunky, clichéd plot devices like Mentally Handicapped Guy (played really badly I might add) To The Rescue and Impossibly Stupid Female Victim Who You Can't Help But Yell At When She Does All the Wrong Things at the Wrong Times, and of course, the Hero With a Drinking Problem (who also plays an almost identical character in this director's other feature "Pineapple"...WTF?)

Most of the "good" characters have underwritten parts and turn in performances that are barely TV-worthy. And this IS an exploitation movie, don't doubt that in any way. But it's no more trashy and lurid than any film that lingers on the suffering of the victims and the ghastly delight of their torturers....so if that makes it cheap and trashy, it has good mainstream company in films like Hostel. Unfortunately, the combination of mediocre acting and poor character development on the part of the heroes doesn't do much to increase our empathy with them. When a film has content that's this nasty, if it doesn't really win you over to the side of the hero, it rapidly becomes a bit of a freak show. And this does.

On the plus side, the script, although it takes the long way home most of the time, occasionally surprises you with some neat twists and turns. The characters of the bad guys all come across realistically enough. It's important in an exploitation film for the villains to not ham it up too much (the genre itself is already overblown), and they don't here. A shout-out here to Cliff Stephens, who plays the main heavy, Mr. Avery. He looks like a cross between one of your drinking buddies in the suburbs and a plausible middle-tier player in the White Slavery trade. The relish he takes in enjoying Cuban cigars and Cognac before putting two of his newest purchases in agony is convincingly played and unnerving.

All the vague statistics and "based on true events" brouhaha of the title cards notwithstanding, the events depicted in "Red Ridge" don't seem REALLY that far-fetched, and the ending is grim, but not over-the-top.

What this film does, it does very well for its genre. It's a pity you can't degrade the quality of the film stock on this one....that's all it's really missing.

Waste of time.

Quite possibly one of the stupidest movies ever made. The acting and story are terrible.

They portray Texas as the land where most men are in-bred hillbilly rapists, or drunks stumbling around, and women are kidnapped, raped and killed on a constant basis. Texas is just like the city, suburbs, or countryside where you live, there is just more of it. People are just like the people where you live, a few drunks, a few crazed psychos, and many decent friendly people. Texans pay the rent, work hard at 9 to 5 jobs, raise families and don't marry their sister or rape every woman they see.

So the only thing worse than this stupid boring movie is the stereotype they try to shove down your throat.

I don't know who wrote that great review but he must have been talking about some other movie.

This was just awful.

Rides high on interest, but no so brains
videorama-759-8593914 January 2023
In the first 10 minutes, it was easy to pass this off as what I pretty well, expected the quality of this film to be like. Riding on too little. But this B grade pic, with it's share of faults, gets more engrossing, as it goes along. There are some pathetic moments, as there are some pathetic and sick characters. Human trafficking movies, obviously sell, like fodder, and you could fare worse than this one. Some underwritten characters, but not some bad performances from few, where we have a strong appealing male lead, with a bit of a sobriety problem, who becomes of course the hero, while I wasn't at home, with some of his attitude. Coming across a damsel in distress, a HT escapee victim, he soon becomes caught up, and framed as the shooter of this crooked cop, involved in this illegal enterprise, true as today's head lines. Things get worse, when his ex is trapped in this house off ill repute, a sort of holding tank for slave victims, before being auctioned off. The ex's yummy half clad daughter, is chained to a bed with her. There's many many amateur patches, where to me, I kind if respect this sort of Indie film making. RR isn't half a bad pic, but it's not good. There's predicability too. And the young actress would of been in much more pain, if three of her toe's were snapped, at a joint, or on the part of the abducter, having keys to a set of a cuffs, in arm's reach of the enslaved, who's wrists weren't both cuffed to the bed railing behind. I do like, how the likeable family come together, at the end. Kind a striking movie cover too. Some truly repellent bad guys in this too.

Red Ridge will surprise you .
brentsmiga21 October 2008
"Red Ridge" proves that a solid film can be made without breaking the bank. I had known about it through people that were involved on both sides of the camera. That can often get in the way of enjoying a film , but not at all. Red Ridge doesn't rely on tricks or complex twists , just good pacing and truth. There was never a time when i said , " that would never happen", or "why didn't they just .......". It simply introduced us to some people, put them in a scary situation, and then "we" wanted to stay with them to see if they can get away. For me personally, Red Ridge was a that movie i wish i could've been in . I hope Red Ridge gets seen by all the right people. These guys deserve to be seen. Brent

Very Scary Movie
akhiljhaveri1 October 2008
You totally get into the fear that is being displayed on the screen. Grips you by the throat and doesn't let go. The worst part of the story is that it is based on true events. This movie reminds me of Monster.

Driving past small towns along the Texas - Mexico border will give you cause to stop and think of the horror. You will think of the darkest side of man's cruelty with horrific vision.

Also have to mention Damian Skinner did an amazing job directing this film especially working with Brandon Matthews and Dawn Gray. Both are relatively unknowns but have put on a performance that is very believable. Good work Damian, Brandon and Dawn.

I have to admit, I loved the climax at the end. I don't want to spoil it but it is worth the price of the ticket!

You will understand this film if you recognize that man can truly be the worst creature on this planet! Be warned, this movie is very scary!

Steer Clear Of This Small Town...
azathothpwiggins13 September 2021
A man has a blowout and winds up in RED RIDGE to get his tire fixed. Unfortunately for him, this town seems to be populated by nefarious hillbillies who all seem to be part of an eeevil conspiracy involving abduction, sexual slavery, and murder.

Side Note: The fact that such a diabolical plot is being carried out is astonishing, since these thuggish hicks are barely intelligent enough to keep breathing in and out!

When the man tries to leave town, he's stopped by a screaming woman, and the real trouble begins.

While certainly not a masterpiece of suspense, this movie does have some effectively unsettling moments (i.e. The woman in the trunk). Like so many "modern" movies, everyone is unlikeable, so there's really no one to root for or care about.

Worth watching once...
