Around this time of year genre fans set out on their annual pilgrimage to the Dark Heart Of Cinema as FrightFest opens its doors once again!
Opening night last year and an iconic breed of horror monster preceded the return of the homicidal Chucky, and a wholesome family gathering. To launch our coverage of the 14th instalment that will run in anticipation of, during, and take in the aftermath of our own personal journey into The Dark Heart Of Cinema, HeyUGuys turned to the filmmakers behind last year’s opening film: The Ford Brothers.
Whilst HeyUGuys would like to express our thanks to John and Howard for personally penning the following prologue, we do remain concerned regarding their casting choices… “Zombies, man, they creep us out…”

The latest film from a resurgent David Cronenberg played to great reviews at Cannes, where it debuted earlier this year. It is further evidence that Cronenberg is one of the most interesting directors working today.
Whether it is a keen choice of subject matter (Maps to the Stars centres on the black hole of celebrity) or his newly found muse (take another bow Mr. Pattison) there’s little doubt of his potency and relevance. Here’s the new trailer for Map to the Stars, a synopsis is below but check out the beautifully held images on show.
John Cusack, Olivia Williams and Mia Wasikowska complete the cast along with Pattison and the film’s lead Julianne Moore.
The 29th of September is when you can join in the fun.

In the Red Room with a Vue, the chorus of delighted FrightFester’s are set to join together in joyous song for the chorus of their clawed and shrivelled icon…
“One, two, Freddy’s coming for you.
Three, four, Better lock your door
Five, six, grab your crucifix.
Seven, eight, Gonna stay up late.
Nine, ten, He’s back again.”
If life can be described as a disappointment, of a vortex of uncertainty, then the one constant is FILM4 FrightFest, which, like a beacon of light, guides us to safely towards a guaranteed trip of unadulterated pleasure into the Dark Heart of Cinema every August Bank Holiday.
So what news has fallen upon our ears to add a little more detail to what the landscape of FrightFest 15 looks like?
Well, this year’s Film4 FrightFest guest list brings together the great, the grand and the gifted as over 100 filmmakers, performers,...

Monster Weekend | Future Cinema Presents Dirty Dancing | Otway: The Movie & Q&A | Open Air Screenings |
Monster Weekend, London
The BFI's ambitious season Gothic: The Dark Heart Of Film casts a celebratory shadow of gloom over the next four months. Proceedings begin this weekend, as the forecourt of the British Museum hosts screenings of such monstrous classics as Jacques Tourneur's occult mystery Night Of The Demon, and Terence Fisher's definitive Hammer reworkings of Dracula and The Mummy. There's horror-themed music beforehand, and fancy dress is encouraged, though using the Ancient Egypt galleries as a prop store is forbidden.
British Museum, WC2, Thu to 31 Aug, bfi.org.uk
Future Cinema Presents Dirty Dancing, London
Somehow, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey's star-cross'd, 1960s-by-way-of-the-1980s fairytale has become the definitive summer outdoor movie, to the extent you'd have thought everyone in the country had seen it outside the comfort of a cinema by now.

Highlights from four-month project include a weekend of screenings at British Museum and a nationwide release of Jack Clayton's The Innocents
There will be homicidal maniacs, possessed children, haunted houses and lust-crazed vampires aplenty, the BFI has promised, in one of the biggest themed film and television seasons it has ever mounted.
Programmers on Thursday announced details of a mammoth project called Gothic: the Dark Heart of Film. It will be a season "filled with dread and fuelled by lust", said BFI creative director Heather Stewart. "It is a great area of film-making, and anything that is disreputable or maligned is always something you want to be shining a spotlight on."
More than 150 titles will be seen at around a thousand screenings across the UK, with the BFI Southbank having its longest yet dedicated season – four months of gothic-themed movies, TV programmes and discussions.

The British Film Institute (BFI) is to launch a major project dedicated to Gothic cinema, which includes more than 150 films and around 1,000 screenings throughout the UK.
Running from August until January 2014, the Gothic project include the longest ever season at BFI’s Southbank venue in London, UK wide theatrical and DVD releases, an education programme, a new BFI Gothic book, a range of partnerships, special guests and commentators including project ambassador Sir Christopher Frayling.
Heather Stewart, creative director at the BFI, said: “Gothic has never been more potent or popular, reflecting the turbulent times we are living in, our deepest fears and hidden passions.
“The British discovered sex in vivid Technicolor through Gothic. With a new generation gripped by the post modern Gothic world of Twilight’s ‘vegetarian’ vampires, Harry Potter’s spells and El James’s 50 Shades, its meaning has mutated yet again. Rob celebrates decades of TV Superman doing what he does best: punching robots into oblivion...
It's hard to believe Superman's been zooming about on that glowing rectangle in the corner of our living rooms for most of his 75 year existence. It's just that we haven't always paid attention, what with things like the Cold War and MasterChef to distract us. But whatever the era, the medium, or the man in the tights, there's one constant when it comes to Superman on TV: he loves to break robots.
So as Superman turns 75, and Henry Cavill faces both Zod and the merciless Brain Interactive Construct of Internet Fandom, let's chart the history of the small screen Man of Steel by looking at the times he's gone up against men of metal...

Since its debut Once Upon A Time has delighted in taking fans to new lands to marvel at of the places we may have only heard of. It introduced us to the Enchanted Forest, Fairytale Land, Wonderland, and now we are invited to travel to Neverland. With only two episodes remaining this season, Once Upon A Time will finally pull back the curtain and reveal the story of Baelfire a.k.a Neal (Michael Raymond-James) and the magical journeys he traveled after being transported through the porthole, leaving his father Rumpletstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) far behind. Once Upon A Time has definitely mixed things up of late, as we head into the concluding episodes of Season 2.
And this Sunday’s “Second Star To The Right” is chock-full with the return of Hook... Regina receiving a literal shock... and a Bae-centric flashback. Not to mention the inclusion of magic beans and triggers as well.
Thankfully, creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz sat down for a Q&A this week and teased what's to come with these next couple episodes, while also giving us a little window into the possible Wonderland spinoff...

Next year's flurry of fairytale film adaptations promises some sinister thrills – but fairy stories have always been dark at heart
Harry's long gone, but wands are still selling. 2013, comme 2012, promises a score of classic fairytale film adaptations – a legion of Pinocchios, Peter Pans, Cinderellas and Wizards of Oz. A cursory squint into the crystal ball that is the Imdb website confirms that most of the upcoming fairytale films will be tormented, adult-oriented affairs; expect the adjective "twisted' to appear with some frequency. The sort of films in which for every lie, Pinocchio has to wash blood off his hands. With sandpaper mittens. That sort of thing.
The Dark Heart of Fairy Tales, a season of older films currently playing at the Barbican, proves Hollywood isn't doing anything new. The screenings mark the bicentenary of the first publication of the Brothers Grimm stories, while acknowledging that popular fairy stories mainly derive...

Film's advance publicity says: 'We the people demand an independent investigation into the tragic events of 9/11'
Hollywood is to court controversy with a film that will challenge the official version of the events of 9/11, a previously taboo topic for the industry mainstream. Martin Sheen, Woody Harrelson and Ed Asner, who have all supported conspiracy theories about the terrorist attacks, have signed up to the movie, which is entitled September Morn.
Styling itself as a drama in the tradition of Twelve Angry Men, the film's advance publicity note hints at a cover-up, saying: "We the people demand that the government revisit and initiates a thorough and independent investigation to the tragic events of 911."
Details of the film, which is to be directed by Bj Davis and written by Howard Cohen, are expected to be revealed at an American Film Market conference in Los Angeles next week, Deadline.com reported.

Even before the premiere of Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman this coming summer, the studio has announced its intentions in looking to do a sequel. Wait, before you launch into the question of how a sequel can be made to Snow White and The Huntsman, let’s look at the why.
In a Q&A talk at the 2012 Pulse Conference last Friday, NBC Universal Studios president and COO Ron Meyer explained that “it is important to develop franchise movies because they have brand recognition, which makes them easier to explain to potential ticket buyers and less expensive to market.”
Unlike Warner Bros and Disney who have partnered with established comic book character brands with DC and Marvel, Universal has worked to make franchises like the Bourne films, The Mummy, Fast & Furious, American Pie and most recently Battleship with Hasbro. When space invaders roll into a settlement in 1873 Arizona, two wily cowboys (Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford) are all that stands between mankind and world domination! Olivia Wilde co-stars; Jon Favreau directs.
Firefly: The Complete Series (2002) Combining sci-fi and western elements may not be new, but it was rarely as much fun as seen in Joss Whedon’s short-lived but fan-adored adventures series Firefly.

As of this weekend, Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon has made over $645 million worldwide in 12 days, a massive yet not unexpected feat that has already pushed Paramount past the $1 billion mark before any other studio this year. The domestic total alone is $261 million, meaning it is the highest-grossing movie of 2011 and has easily recouped the roughly $195M production budget ponied up for a third CGI-laden explosion-fest, with much more to come.
Ordinarily, those kind of numbers would mean an instant sequel in development. Talent deals would be hashed out, budgets drawn up, familiar stories slapped together, and its off to the races again with high hopes of more millions. Just like what we’re seeing with an inevitable fifth Pirates of the Caribbean at Disney with more of the same starring Pirate Johnny Depp. But what if the players don’t want to return?
Shia Labeouf says he’s not coming back.

Last week the Pentagon destroyed thousands of copies of a single book. The book was Army Reserve Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer's new memoir "Operation Dark Heart", about his time in Afghanistan leading a black-ops team, and the Pentagon was so determined the public not read portions of it they purchased all 9,500 copies of it directly from its publisher, St. Martins, with the express purpose of destroying it.

Big news today in our nation’s continuing War on Books: The New York Times is reporting that the Pentagon has plans to “buy and destroy all 10,000 copies” of a new Afghanistan-war memoir. In the opinion of Defense Department officials, the book, Operation Dark Heart, by Lieutenant Colonel Anthony A. Shaffer, includes “more than 200 passages suspected of containing classified information.” The Times adds that it bought its copy online last week. (The paper also already read it, got a lot out of it, and knows the ending, but won’t spoil it for you.) A Pentagon spokesman confirmed that the military, the publisher, and Shaffer were all working “closely and cooperatively” to settle the matter. However, if the Defense Department did not want anyone to buy Operation Dark Heart, it did not have to go through the embarrassing hassle of purchasing and shredding the entire first print run. In fact,...

New 'Eclipse' Trailer Proves David Slade Could Turn These Five Properties Into Something Terrifying!
The new trailer for "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" debuted today, cementing the fact that director David Slade is a wonderful, wonderful man. By all accounts, it appears that Slade has brought his signature flair for the supernatural and the horrific to "Eclipse," turning a franchise that's mostly aimed at a younger female audience into something that any action and horror geek could get excited by.
Not that I'm particularly surprised, really. Slade is a talented filmmaker with such expertise over the horror genre that I'm pretty sure he could make any harmless property into something gloriously gory. In fact, here are five seemingly innocent franchises that Slade would have little trouble taking down a dark and dangerous path.
Barbie
Barbie and Ken have everything they could ever ask for — great friends, a beautiful pink car, a lovely dream house — until Barbie's sister Skipper is rendered comatose by a mysterious incident.
