BERLIN -- Dani Levy's comedy Go for Zucker: An Unorthodox Comedy was the big winner at the 55th German Film Prizes, winning six of the coveted Lola stauettes, Germany's highest film honor, including best film, best director and best actor for Zucker star Henry Huebchen. Go for Zucker also grabbed the best screenplay prize for its script by Levy and Holger Franke; the best costume Lola went to Lucie Bates; and Niki Reiser took the best film music prize for his klezmer-inflected Zucker score. The story of two warring brothers -- one an orthodox West German Jew, the other an East German communist -- who have to settle their differences in order to collect their inheritance, Go for Zucker was originally planned as a low-budget TV movie.

BERLIN -- The Oscar-nominated war drama Downfall was snubbed in the nominations for this year's German Film Awards, announced Monday, reaping just three acting noms, while the comedy Going for Zucker! led the pack with a whopping 10 mentions. The nominations for Germany's highest film industry awards, also known as the Lolas, were announced by the German Film Academy at the prestigious Adlon Hotel in Berlin. Downfall, about Hitler's last days at the closing of World War II, was Germany's most popular drama of last year, bringing in more at the boxoffice than Shrek 2, but it also was criticized by Germany's cultural elite for not taking a clear enough moral stand on Hitler. Bruno Ganz was nominated for best actor for his portrayal of Hitler. Director Dani Levy's popular comedy Zucker! was nominated for best picture, best director, best screenwriter (Levy and Holger Franke) and for three best actor awards.
COLOGNE, Germany -- Berlin-based distributor X Verleih has reduced theatrical rental rates for Dani Levy's upcoming comedy Alles Auf Zucker! in response to German exhibitors' complaints. German exhibition groups HDF and AG Kino had said that a decision by X Verleih to let Zucker air on German pubcaster ARD just three months after its Jan. 6 release would ruin the film's boxoffice chances. German exhibitors are worried this kind of short release pattern could set a precedent and point to Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, which also aired German free TV three months after its theatrical debut. Commercial channel ProSieben aired the political documentary Nov. 1, the eve of the U.S. presidential election (HR 10/7).

TEL AVIV, Israel -- The first edition of Jewish Eye: World Jewish Film Festival opens Oct. 28 with a screening of Nicholas Racz's black comedy Burial Society (Canada). The six-day event, held at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque in cooperation with the Jerusalem-based Steven Spielberg Jewish Film Archive, will feature 70 films -- 60 in competition -- from 17 countries. The festival, described by organizers as the first of its kind in Israel and the Jewish world, will showcase the work of both Jewish and non-Jewish filmmakers drawn from the 100-plus Jewish film festivals held annually worldwide and will include features, documentaries, television dramas and series, and animation. Three competitive categories, which include features, documentaries and shorts, will share prize money of $6,000, said artistic director Gadi Castel. The event will screen the world premier of documentary Herzl, the first-ever Israel-Hungary co-production. Director Eva Pataki is expected to be on hand. Other international guests include Swiss director Dani Levy with Zucker (Germany) and Yves Boisset with The Dreyfus Affair (France). The festival, said to be hosting the world's largest collection of Jewish-related films, is contributing a three-part retrospective tracing the histories of both Zionism and local filmmaking, a package containing previously unseen material that is expected to screen at international and Jewish film festivals, said director Hillel Tryster.
