The ‘Grave Tales’ Horror film series concludes at Webster University Thursday March 6th with a screening of Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). The screening will be at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood). The movie starts at 7:30 and a Facebook invite for the event can be found Here.
Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre may or may not be the scariest horror movie ever made (I think it is) but it’s certainly one of the most referenced, imitated, ripped off, and influential. It opened in October of 1974 when I was 13 and I read about it in a few monster mags, but could not initially talk my dad into taking me to see it (hew was usually pretty cool about that kind of thing – he’d already taken me to...

Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre may or may not be the scariest horror movie ever made (I think it is) but it’s certainly one of the most referenced, imitated, ripped off, and influential. Hooper claims the film was his reaction to Vietnam and Watergate and he shot it in grainy 16mm which gives the film its gritty in-your-face realism. For a first-timer, Hooper directed with a solid sense of composition and attention to detail and forced some amazing performances from his cast. Audiences and critics at the time responded to it’s high level of gore, but they were wrong. It’s actually a masterpiece of restraint that Hooper made and much of its magic lies in the fact that the audience thinks they saw a no-holds-barred gorefest when they didn’t (the scene of the Hitchhiker (Ed Neal) slicing his own hand with a knife is...

You have to respect the workmanlike filmmakers who keep working in our beloved horror department. Say what you will -- be it kind of critical -- of the films of Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson. but there's always something to be said for indie-friendly horror freaks who simply keep churning out the movies. (Their better efforts include Autopsy (2008) and their early and underrated remake of The Toolbox Murders from 2004, although Mortuary, Night of the Demons, and Fertile Ground have their fans as well.)
And hey, the latest collaboration between Gierasch (director) and Anderson (co-writer) is a solid little combo of good ol' occult-based horror nastiness and an appreciable dose of downbeat film noir moodiness. While it has a few solid moments of straight scares and impressive gore, Fractured works best as a low-key character piece that feels like a respectful homage to The Outer Limits or Alan Parker's Angel Heart.

Do you think that when Bill Paxton auditioned for the role of Paul Andrews in the Howard Avedis classic, Mortuary, that he realized that he would become one of the best known polygamist on the planet? Further more did he realize that he would become iconic as the whiny, outspoken, utterly quotable but almost detestable type cast antagonist in more than one picture from the 80′s? Only Kelly Lubrock knows for sure (Lips!). Make a right onto memory lane, then turn right (spoken in the voice of a true Gps).

It's fair to say Tobe Hooper has been off the grid lately. The famed director of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre hasn't delivered a feature film since 2005's Mortuary, an '80s throwback that had its charms, but was uneven at best.
Now, Hooper is back with Djinn, a somewhat controversial movie that manages the thorny trick of being brand new yet feeling oddly familiar.
As you probably guessed from its title, Djinn is the story of a genie. And while this might feel like fairly fresh territory for a horror flick — have there been any genie movies since the Wishmaster series? — the following synopsis makes Djinn sound a lot like one of Hooper's other famous films. See if you can guess which one.
"An Emirati couple discovers their luxury high-rise is built on the site of an abandoned fishing village that's also home to the malevolent spirits called Djinn.

[1] Although he made his name in the late '70s and early '80s with horror classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Salem's Lot, and (at least officially) Poltergeist, director Tobe Hooper's been laying low as of late. His last credits, two episodes of the Showtime series Masters of Horror, and the 2005 film Mortuary, are from several years back, and the films he did before that (including Toolbox Murders and The Mangler) were neither as well known nor as highly respected as his early work. Happily for horror fans, he's back this year with a new film called Djinn, described as "unique new take on the haunted house thriller uncovers the dark truth behind classic fairytales of the Genie." And in even better news, the first trailer for the film actually looks pretty good, aside from the fact that some of the scenes could use subtitles for English speakers.

Last March, Tobe (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) Hooper teamed with start up Arab production company Imagenation Abu Dhabi and set sail on Djinn. Djinn is a big project for Imagenation Abu Dhabi, who count the picture as just their second cinematic effort, and for Hooper, who has been away from the director’s chair since 2005′s Mortuary. With a script from David (The Village) Tully, and a cast led by Khalid (The Devil’S Double) Laith, all involved oozed enthusiasm from the start.
Synopsis (courtesy Imagenation Abu Dhabi):
“An Emirati couple return home from a trip and discover that their new apartment has been built on a site that is home to some malevolent beings.”
In a press release in February, 2011, Tobe Hooper said of the film, “The horror genre speaks an international language and I am so pleased to be involved in a project with Imagenation Abu Dhabi that will transcend cultures and borders.

A family returns to the United Arab Emirates from a trip to find their fancy apartment is haunted by a Djinn – a demon that lies at the heart of the Middle Eastern myths about genies. This one apparently doesn’t sing “Friend Like Me” or grant wishes. This is the premise for Tobe Hooper‘s new project Djinn which sounds an awful lot like his 1982 project Poltergeist right down to the “abandoned fishing village” the apartment complex is built upon. Since Hooper hasn’t directed a film since 2005, it’ll be interesting to see him return to a very familiar form even if its in a foreign land. Plus, his recent return to directing has been average to downright terrible with The Toolbox Murders and Mortuary. Maybe this re-return will be the key to success for the icon who delivered the great horrors of the late 70s and 80s. Hooper is definitely no stranger to ghost stories...

“Tobe Hooper is tasked with directorial duties on Arabian horror movie Djinn, penned by U.S. writer David Tully and backed by Imagenation Abu Dhabi.
Hooper, whose resume scares up mentions for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Poltergeist, will take up the reins on the haunted house thriller, with shooting scheduled to begin in the United Arab Emirates in March.
It tells the story of a young Emirati couple who return home from the U.S. and discover that their new apartment in a luxury high-rise built...

Within the last year, original Texas Chainsaw Massacre director Tobe Hooper switched representation and found a home at Evolution Management, a robust firm that reps many folks working in the genre today. Great news, I thought, for Hooper who hasn't done a feature since Mortuary and, since then, directed two episodes of Masters of Horror . He's still attached to From a Buick 8 , the Stephen King adaptation, but that seems to be running low on gas. Being housed at Evolution is the best thing for him right now. He'll have some guidance. And maybe the fellas there will set him on the right track. Distance himself from the stigma of his '90s output and make "A Tobe Hooper film" mean something. Now, it's no secret Evolution shares the same offices as Twisted...

Indie filmmaker Jon Keeyes, whose credits include the well-received American Nightmare and Suburban Nightmare, sent along news that his latest chiller Fall Down Dead will receive limited theatrical release via his Highland Myst Entertainment and New Film International. The movie will open in December in select cities nationwide; Keeyes passed on some photos, which you can see below.
Fall Down Dead stars genre fave Udo Kier (first photo) as The Picasso Killer, a serial murderer who turns his victims into works of art, and Lolita’s Dominique Swain (second photo) is Christie, a young woman trapped (along with six others) in a building one night with the madman. The late Carradine (third photo) appears as Wade, a bumbling security guard, and R. Keith Harris and Mehmet Gunsur co-star as detectives.
“This movie has everything I love about horror films,” Keeyes tells Fango. “Quirky characters with great conflict, an original twist on the killer,...

A lot of times, a filmmaker’s first feature film is a passion project, something they’ve been working on for years. Many times, it is this time spent and devotion to this one project that will make this first film the best film of a director’s career. Today, in honor of Neill Blomkamp’s first feature film, District 9, we present our top 10 films by first-time directors.
10. Henry V (Kenneth Branagh, 1989)
“Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more,” and so it was to be when, after it appeared that no one could ever improve on Sir Lawrence Olivier’s 1944 Shakespearean spectacle, Henry V, along came an unknown Irishman, actor, Kenneth Branagh in 1989 with his dark take on the English King. Branagh, like Olivier, both in their directorial debuts, starred as Henry the Fifth, the young king who leads his army to wage war on France and claim his rightful place.

The end credits of Penny Dreadful (part of After Dark Horrorfest) state that the movie is “© 2005 Dreadful Films.” Must…not…make…obvious…joke. Actually, I have to be fair and say that this isn’t a dreadful film, just a quite problematic one—starting with the fact that the title is rather misleading. The storyline has nothing to do with the Victorian-era “penny dreadful” pulp tales; it is about a girl named Penny, but she isn’t dreadful, though dreadful things do happen to her.
Quite a few of them, in fact, starting with a prologue auto crash that she survives but which bloodily kills her parents when she’s a young girl. The next we see of her, she’s a teenager (Rachel Miner) with a phobia of cars who’s being taken on a therapeutic road trip by her psychologist, Orianna (Mimi Rogers). The fact that the attendant...

Now, I actually know the people who wrote this film, Adam and Jace. I like them. Especially Jace. But I really don’t like their film. At all. From the bad sets, the really awful nurse uniform, the cheesy, never-fully-explained plot, to the lack of cohesive narrative and any real scares (or actual autopsies of any kind) – I just didn’t like it. Autopsy is part of the Horrorfest After Dark 8 Films to Die For, out on DVD March 31st, and it seems like each year the films get worse and worse. Autopsy is the directorial debut from Adam Geirasch, who just wrapped a remake of Night of the Demons starring Tiffany Shepis and Bobby Sue Hall (For After Dark Horrorfest IV,...

"What makes "Pop Skull" so unique is the fact that its aggressive voice is mixed with a subtle and evocative story,...
