A nice 90+ minutes of fresh air
thetza_1725 September 2005
I thought this was a nice escape to very busy Saturday. It wasn't great but I was entertained. It took me back to my childhood. I enjoyed the movie more when they were away from the skating rink though. That could have been the whole movie. I really hate ignorant people that rate movies without even seeing them. All those people on here voting and gave the movie a 1 rating are just trying to bring the numbers for this film down. It doesn't deserve that. And I wish people on IMDb that vote like that would grow the hell up. So if you are one of those people that vote before they see film. Go play with yourself instead. And this goes to the people that give films the 10 ratings without seeing the film. Let's be as accurate as we can people and keep this the best internet site, or source period, for films.

Clichéd but Fun
pc9516 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had some good energy and laughs although the dramatic parts pretty much detracted from the picture and were terribly clichéd. Editing out the loss of the mother would've done the story some good. The drama didn't have its place. The formulaic storyline everyone's seen before, but the actors bring some spirit and laughs well with some zingers and commeraderie. The roller-skating/dancing is pretty well cut together and fun to watch especially with all the added theatrics. Supporting actors like the garbage guys and the villainous competition help as well. Overall it was a fun flick with fast-moving energy, choreography, and laughs all within the clichéd formulaic plot but you can identify the spirit of the cast and their uplifting and entertaining performances. Worth a rental for sure.

Rollerskatin' & celebratin'...
moonspinner552 February 2008
Engaging disco fantasy set in 1978 from writer Norman Vance, Jr., who seems to have overdosed on a mixture of roller-boogie movies and reruns of "What's Happening!!" Five teenage friends from the Southside of Chicago are let down after their local skating rink is closed for good, forcing them into the city's deluxe roller palace, where all the coolest cats hang out; soon they're engaged in a winner-take-all skating contest. Since there were absolutely no decent movies made about the roller disco craze during the 1970s, it's nice to finally get a good one. However, Bow Wow's broken family dynamic--which chews up far too much of the screen-time--is doggedly sincere and "emotional". Perhaps showing more skating practice on the boys' part might have been more beneficial to the big showdown at the finale. That last act is pure commercial pandering, nearly losing the film's heart and comically-grounded focus. The cinematography is disappointing, as is the editing, although the cast is uniformly excellent and the music is terrifically energized: disco never sounded so good! **1/2 from ****

Pretty good.
spilledmarbles-119 December 2005
I think this movie was marketed wrong, when seeing the trailers I assumed the majority of the movie was about the roller skating, not quite enough to get me in to see it. In reality there are a lot of hearty story lines that attract you to the characters on an emotional level.

The Sweetness character is a hilarious disco stereotype and it couldn't have been played better.

I think a nod should be given to Bow Wow, who stands out as one of the few who crossover from singing to acting very well...especially for someone his age. Hopefully he plays some more serious roles and gains some more respect.

Brought back memories
imdbmerlyn25 September 2005
Between 1978 and 1990, I spent ten hours a week on skates, and was part of a performing troupe for part of that. The soundtrack was great... many authentic songs. It's too bad the movie wasn't set a few years later instead of 78... I really would have enjoyed some Run-DMC and Daz Band and Gap Band in the mix.

And the moves were indeed real. I kept shuffling my feet as I watched, bringing back all that muscle memory. Alas, at age 43, my knees would snap in two if I tried any of those stunts today.

I cringed every time they showed some break dancing moves though. For a movie set in 1978, there shouldn't have been any break dancing moves at all, because that didn't make it to the roller floor until 82 or 83 or so, as it gained popularity outside the roller floor as well. Sure, there were spins and tricks and wiggle-waggle feet and moves from classic ballet-style roller dancing on the rollerdisco floor, but nobody jumped down and did headspin. Ick. Bad research!

A great movie with great upcoming actors
eXtreme2330 April 2006
In the late '70s when roller skating is all youngsters were doing, X (Bow Wow) and his pals ruled at it. But when the doors of their local skating rink close, they feel it is the end, there is another skating rink that they don't like to attend - uptown's Sweetwater Roller Rink, complete with its over-the-top skaters and beautiful girls. Preparing for a skate off later that week, X and his friends have to work together and win as a team.

Roll Bounce is Bow Wow's second lead roll in a film. I have to say he wasn't bad. He's a good actor. There is a scene when X and his father are arguing and he gives a performance that I thought was well. But I have to say that his rapping isn't so good. I feel that he acts better than her raps, and that's not a good thing. There were other young actors and I thought that they will be getting some roles later in their career. This also is a good movie. I enjoyed it. You will have watching this because I did. There were some in jokes that you can laugh at, the story is good and the acting is well done. I remember the movie "You Got Served" which I thought that wasn't a good movie. The acting in that movie was terrible and watching Roll Bounce, you know which is a better movie.

This is a fun movie and I am recommending it. People will enjoy this film. 7.5/10

Better than I thought it would be
athenazengaia21 December 2005
I actually enjoyed this movie. I wasn't expecting to like it nearly as much as I did. It's a great family movie for older kids (10+), and it was a fairly accurate look back into 1978. All of the lead actors did great work. Bow Wow should be proud (although it's time to start using his real name I think). And the skating and practice it must have taken to get that down is noteworthy. The only thing that didn't work for me was the skating guy who handed out skates. What's with the Jimi Hendrix look? Would that have been accurate in 1978? Well, a few things regarding the time period may have slipped through. But those are just minor details. Cute movie. I enjoyed it.

this movie has some bright moments to it. Mostly because of the subject matter and the fact that they had the god sense to have the song Rol Bounce in it. It mostly shows that roller skating is fun and its probably a nice movie for mom and the kids to see but with regard to race which came up in a lot of earlier posts there was a bit more comment on race in this movie than in a comparable film like Lords of Dogtown, but not so much to distract from a universal if nostalgic appeal. The camera-work disappointed me a bit during the skate scenes and i thought they could have been a bit more creative and played up the whole art of movement thing that you get with rollerskating. I only saw it on a small screen though and imagine it would be better on the moviescreen with a booming system than on bootleg (albeit a high quality one). Bow wow was actually much better in this movie than in that Like Mike thing and I would say has potential to do well as an actor if he improves at this rate. The material he had to work with was not so good though, although a more accomplished young actor might have done only a bit better. Mostly the movie made me thing "I wonder if there is a roller-disco anywhere in town?" cos it looks fun.. till the skin on your ankles start to chafe from the cheap rentals that it.

Sweet comedy and drama, especially for anyone who grew up in the '70s
cjohnson1214423 January 2006
This weekend, we saw a movie that effortlessly combines '70s nostalgia, social and family drama, athleticism and some really fine performances into one gem of a movie -- "Roll Bounce," a very sweet coming-of-age movie about semi-urban teens in the age of roller disco. I'm not kidding -- this movie doesn't hit a single wrong note. The fashions, the phrases, the world depicted are perfect late '70s. The acting is spot-on, and features one of the most real father- son relationships I've ever seen on film. Chi McBride, as the father, brings a quiet but heavy dignity to the role, and his interaction with Bow Wow is just real. No clichés, no nonsense. That makes it all sound heavy when in fact it's beautiful -- and the movie is very very funny, not afraid to play up the silliest sides of the '70s soul and disco scenes with some characters that would have been at home in the heyday of Parliament, an outlandish appearance by Wayne Brady (and a lesser one by DMC, or, as my kids now know, "D's for never Dirty, MC's for Mostly Clean."). Plus, a couple of scenes with Charlie Murphy that were happily expanded in the "gag reel," which is the only part of the disc really not suitable for children. Let me put it this way -- it's been a LONG time since I watched a movie two nights in a row.

Roll Bounce....not quite "Roller Boogie"
rsavino23 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I'm very glad to see that someone out there still remembers the "Roller Disco" craze that swept the nation after "disco dancing" started it's decline. But, I'm not sure WHO Malcolm D. Lee was appealing to when directing this movie, either the young 2000's generation or the thirty-something's that were coming of age when "roller disco" was a house-hold term? Straight up...the movie was extremely well-cast, surprisingly so, with most of it's stars not even born yet during the time of the original skate craze. Bow Wow's performance is flawless and nicely complimented by his "pose" of best friends, back-up skaters, that produce much of the film's comedic value. Chi McBride's character is great and also very funny. Jurnee Smollett is right on target with her role as "Tori", the new girl in town, "ugly duckling brace-face" turn "swan" by the end of the movie. However, the movie does lack in several areas with a few "setting flaws". In the opening, at the older rink, we hear the song "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" a song by Vaughn Mason & Crew that debuted in 1979; the movie takes place in the summer of 1978. Also, during the opening credits skating scene, we see a young skater with "light-up" quad wheels, an item that just showed up on the market a few years ago...would have been impossible in '78. For the big skate competition, Bow Wow's crew chooses the song "Le Freak" from Chic, but Sweetness's gang "steals" the song and skates to it first; this is very reminiscent of 2000's "Bring It On"...(spirit fingers!!!) Furthermore, the kid's state that they don't know who the Bee Gees are ...which I find impossible not to have even heard of the "Gibb Brothers" in 1978, yet the kids are all ready to dazzle skating audiences with Chic's "Le Freak", a song that BARELY debuted in '78. There is a DJ at the run-down, older rink who is perfect and right on the mark with a "late '70s DJ"...and yet, at the awesome Sweet Water Roller Rink, the DJ looks like a throwback to 1968, donning hippie threads, a peace-symbol necklace and a larger-than-life afro. A very frail looking Wesley Jonathan plays "Sweetness" with a crew of oddball skaters who look like they fell out of a Salvation Army drop-off box, wearing every piece of over-the-top 1970s gaudy clothing they could find....do very little to the believability of the setting. Though some of the setting is pretty good, with hairstyles, cars and furniture...yet Director Lee goes seriously wrong again, this time in the quintessential area of '70s teen slang; we hear a kid mention "digits" when referring to a phone number, and another teen states "WHATEVER!!!", two terms clearly from the 1990s. This lack of attention to little details throughout the picture ruin the fantasy of being back in the good old days of 1978, let a lone a skating rink! Lee should have paid a bit closer attention to "Roller Boogie", "Skate Town, USA", and "Xanadu" for better tips on what people in the late 70s were wearing to roller rinks back in "the day". Also, 1978 also seems a bit too early for disco skating to be such a big phenomenon in such a small town...when in actuality, the fad didn't sweep the nation until mid 1979, early 1980. Watch this movie for the fun skating scenes and NOT the coming of age story Lee tries so desperately to push on his audience. If you remember 1978, and/or were apart of the original roller disco fad, that originated in NYC, like I was, look for the "flaws" that I mentioned...they're hard to miss. Furthermore, the great 70's songs you hear throughout the movie...don't expect to hear them on the CD soundtrack; they're not there!?!

I rate it a six pack!
lesfrenz1 July 2006
Unrealistic. A poor mix of acting and skating. The movie could have been very entertaining if accomplished skaters did the acting. Instead, ordinary actors who couldn't skate, had poorly choreographed skating dubbed in. Adults watching this movie will need to drink a six-pack, to make it watchable. Not showing the heads of the actors, as they supposedly skated made the film hard to watch. Conversely, showing the heads of the actors, as they faked skating, compounded the agony. It is a fine movie, if you like juvenile, predictable, plot lines. It's a movie that makes one wish blue-screens and green-screen were never invented!

This is a great movie, especially if you grew up in the 70's
kevin-r-crupper4 January 2006
This movie brought back memories long forgotten. I loved to skate as a kid and this movie inspired me to start skating again. I've lost some of the skills I once had...but I recently purchased some new skates and I will be a permanent fixture at the Skating rink. It made me remember how much I loved skating, and watching all the skaters get their jam on was out of this world! Great movie for all ages!! My kids and I will spend a lot of quality time in the rink! If you like good music, super, phenomenal skating skills, go see this movie...you won't regret it. I was jamming in my seat when the music and skating was taking place and I'm sure you will do the same...Enjoy!

It is a little bit like 'Dogtown' meets 'Next Friday'.
Movieguy_blogs_com21 September 2005
In 'Roll Bounce' Bow Wow plays X, a kid from South Chicago that loves to skate. Unfortunately, the local skating rink is being shutdown. So X and his friends have to commute up north to the Sweetwater skating rink. Are these south-side kids going to be able to fit in? Set in the late seventies, this is a Family movie is about some kids from the hood trying a different environment and fit in. They don't get a lot of respect at the new rink, so they have to prove themselves at the upcoming skate off. But X has a lot of other problems to deal with. His mom just passed away, his dad is out of work and everyone is having difficulty adjusting. Overall this was not a bad movie. I did think it was a little too goofy for my tastes. It is a little bit like 'Dogtown' meets 'Next Friday'.

Apart from Bow Wow (formerly Li'l Bow Wow), there a many upcoming stars in this film. Rick Gonzalez (Coach Carter, War of the Worlds), Khleo Thomas (Holes) and Nick Cannon (Drumline) all star in this movie. Chi McBride (Undercover Brother) also has a really performance as X's father.

Quite mindless!
Sherazade27 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
A young boy (bow wow) enters an unattainable skating contest in order to win prize money when he realises that his father has been keeping a secret from him and his little sister about the real state of the family's financial affairs. There is also the issue of the death of the boy's mother which is a lingering but undressed subject until the culminating points of the film.

Meagan Good co-stars as bow wow's love interest and Nick Cannon plays a perpetually high roller blading superstar in this very predictable, sometimes corny, cliché ridden, lame joke running wannabe hilarious comedy.

Somebody wrote and I quote: "Spot jamming, dancing on skates in one spot, did not appear until the early 1980s." That comnent is absolutely FALSE. We were spot jamming/dancing on our roller skates when were children in the 60's and 70's. I would not DARE imply we got that started on the 60's or 70's. Spot jamming probably began way before my generation came on the scene. It maybe began in the 40's and 50's. I just never thought we created that. For anybody to say "spot jamming/ dancing on skates in one spot did not appear until the early 80's clearly never lived in Detroit.

Weakness for Sweetness
ksmacy-23 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
The most popular skating movies preceding this are ROLLERBALL, PRAYER OF THE ROLLERBOYS, and SOLARBABIES, but those were all about futuristic, post-apocalyptic tales and did not have soundtracks with "Le Freak", "Emotion", "Hollywood Swingin'", and "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll". I love a skate-off, dance-off, rap-off ending, but after this, I will accept no less than the villain ripping off his shirt once he completes the ultimate routine, as SWEEEEETness (Wesley Jonathan) does. Somehow, Nick Cannon isn't playing Sweetness (who has a pack of groupies with matching "Weakness for Sweetness" jackets), but the roller-skate rental Lothario who hands out skates bigger than your actual size to make the ladies think you're well-endowed. We've also got Wayne Brady, as he looked in that beer commercial when he went to 70s night with some friends in an afro, but it was actually 70's night for people in their 70's, and Charlie Murphy as a garbage man. Bow Wow, does have charisma and some moves, but his gang outshined him. My favorite was afro-sporting "Naps", the only one I recognized was the kid from HOLES, the girl who played brace-faced "Tori" is the new Tisha Campbell, and Meagan Good (6 years older than Bow Wow – the ages are a mess in this movie), as "Naomi", is the new Gabrielle Union. I was a fan of director Malcolm D. Lee's UNDERCOVER BROTHER too, and the only low point of ROLL BOUNCE was the father-son relationship, which was wayyyy too serious for the rest of the movie.

Good movie, great music, awesome skating!
kburke659 August 2006
This movie brings back a lot of memories for me as I spent hundreds of hours at the roller rink in the 70's. The music, the clothes and the Sweetwater Roller Rink was great. Although the movie has some continuity goofs, overall it's good and I enjoy watching it over and over. I especially like the fact that the ending left an "open door" for a sequel. I would like to see X and Sweetness team up and go against a new skating team or X's father and Tori's mother get together, buy the old Palisades Garden rink and reopen it. I see several story lines for a sequel involving X, Sweetness, Tori, Naomi and the Garden Boys.

Go Get Your Wheels On!
intelearts26 October 2009
This is a great slice of fake nostalgia - the 70s never was so clean or easy but this is a fun family movie with roller skating as the theme.

With a number of threads to the plot, coping with grief, new neighbors, closing of their Southside skating rink etc; this was complex enough to keep adults interested.

Above all Bow Wow yet again delivers a great performance. He has a brilliant charm here, modest and likable, but fresh in places. It all just works really well. The skating is great fun and the music is good too.

This is a fun and funny movie about being a teenager in the 1970s and deserves a wide audience.

Hard to Overlook the Atrocious Acting
guszak4 June 2019
Yeah, I know this is supposed to be good lighthearted fun and escapist, even though some of the material is kind of heavy. I get it. However, if yo are going to make a major Hollywood picture, writing and acting have to mean something. The writing and acting in this thing are both dismal. It was hard not to laugh or at least frown when some of the more serious scenes were being acted in the most wooden and fashion. Sorry, horrible movie.

Exactly as Advertised!
candy_flesh8 October 2005
We saw Roll Bounce this afternoon. It was exactly what I expected it to be. A predictable, exaggerated, silly, corny, inauthentic 70's nostalgia-fest.

We loved it! Seriously, it's probably in our top five for the year thus far. It was so much fun. Even the dramatic, serious moments were good and not laughable. My husband said afterwards he was thinking how funny it was that an emotional scene in an otherwise fluffy, insubstantial feel-good movie could evoke more feeling in him than all two hours of The Constant Gardener, for example.

Anyhow, we've both been a good mood ever since, we just had a great time at the movies. It was nice to see a good, clean, wholesome family movie that doesn't suck.

Fun and Entertaining! With an awesome soundtrack!
ElmStreetsLastBrat9 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
2005's Roll Bounce is a fun and entertaining film. I had no interest in seeing it but my mom wanted to and so I rented it from Blockbuster and watched it last night. And I was pleasantly surprised. This was a fun and quite entertaining film. Bow Wow plays Xavier Smith, a teen who lives with his father and younger sister and who's mother has just passed away. He and his friends love to roller skate and one day their beloved skating rink has been shut down. But luckily a new and improved skating rink called Sweetwater opens up. It's owner is a brash, cocky, and handsome guy named Sweetness, played by Wesley Jonathon. Sweetness is an excellent skater, and so Xavier and his friends find out that there's gonna be a skate off in a couple of weeks, so they make a plan to outskate Sweetness and become the best skaters ever. Yeah, this plot does sound a little silly but it was really fun. To me the most entertaining parts of the film were seeing everyone skate and do their skating tricks. Mainly because I never learned to skate and I wonder how they do it! Skating was always so difficult for me. I never could do it! And then seeing these kids on that roller rink skating makes me wish I had learned! It looks like so much fun! So it was very exciting to see these kids perform different methods of skating. All the actors did fine jobs. Especially Bow Wow. He had some great one-liners and he's a cute guy and he seemed to have a lot of fun doing this movie and doing all that skating. He was a blast to watch. And the actors who played his friends had some funny one-liners too and my mom and I were laughing a lot. This was a very funny film also. I forget his name but the actor who played Bow Wow's dad was also really funny. He was a joy to watch too. Nick Cannon was OK in the small role he had. He didn't add anything special to the film and we could've done without him. But he was still pretty funny.

But even if the plot of the film sounds silly, I think you should definitely watch this film for the awesome soundtrack! Anyone who grew up in the 70s with 70s music will enjoy it immensely. My mom was loving it! She just kept mentioning how much she loved the soundtrack and she was singing almost every song that came on! I was born in the 80s but I still enjoyed the soundtrack too. And for me that was what added to the excitement of the film. Even if you're not entertained by the skating, you will definitely be entertained by the soundtrack and the music! This was a fun film and I'm glad I rented it. Thank you for reading my review!

Definitely not the worst movie ever but...
joemystery200424 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Roll Bounce is the type of movie that even when you try to appreciate it for what it is, it's still lacking. I saw this with a friend in exchange for her seeing "An Unfinished Life" (highly recommended by the way) I don't even know where to begin. I guess I'll start with questions: 1. Why wasn't Meagan Good laughed out of the audition for this film? This broad (while nice to look at, don't get me wrong) has zero presence on screen. I mean, I know Bow Wow is a great thespian, but he can only do so much to carry a scene.

2. Why wasn't the scene in which Bow Wow was smashing the car and crying cut from the movie? A: This scene came out of left-field and was way too heavy for this movie. And B: The director should have seen that Bow Wow couldn't carry such an *ahem* emotional scene.

3. How did it ever come down to a skate off? Come on, dog! The other team was doing flips. FLIPS! They should have had that, no question.

All in all, Roll Bounce isn't great, but it isn't terrible either. I think it's a shame that there aren't a lot of good roles written for black people. Instead, we get this.

Worth seeing!
Beddiewong8 January 2006
This film was like a trip back in time. The roller skating, moves, and clothes all supply a trip down memory lane. The character Sweetness was bad (meant in a good way)! Bow Wow's performance blended well with the other characters. It was also great to see Jurnee Smollet and Meagan Good again!! (They were sisters in Kasi Lemmon's Eve's Bayou--exceptional film!) This movie is cute, fun, and great to watch. I would recommend it.

I had no upsets with the filming. The language can be a little spicy for little ones. But overall, the story is kept at the roller rink. The Southside Boys are a wacky group. They love to crack on each other. Overall, I thought the movie was great. Lots of comedy, family drama, and roller skating action.

Fun Coming of Age flick set in the 70s with a funky soundtrack
DJJOEINC20 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Maybe it was low expectations after seeing several middling pics in a row- but I was pleasantly surprised by Roll Bounce - an charming and fun flick about teens in the roller disco era- Bow Wow was the lead in this movie playing X a son who is still grieving for his recently deceased mother.Chi Mcbride does a great job as a father who is looking for work while trying to hold his family together and deal with the passing of his beloved. For the most part this is a comedy- the kids cut on each other the whole flick- and it is fun.The crosstown rival is Sweetness- who is like the pimpdaddy of roller disco- he has an entourage including 3 hotties who have shirts that read "a weakness for Sweetness".The gag reel has some hilarious stuff with Charlie Murphy riffing .A good coming of age flick. Probably the second best rental coming out this week-right behind 40 Year Old Virgin B+

NOT true to 1978
ddock110 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Beyond the story line, there are just too many things that don't ring true to 1978, which was when the competition was supposed to have taken place. I was a teenager in the late 70's, so it was easy for me to spot the inconsistencies. The Pepsi can with a big bar code was definitely early 80's. There was no need for those bar codes on merchandise until the grocery stores started using the scanner registers in the early 80's. The boom box was also early 80's. The guys in long baggy shorts were late 80's at least. Tight shorts and jeans were the thing in the late 70's. I personally saw 2 guys I knew get suspended from my junior high for wearing very tight jeans to school with no underwear. These guys were mature enough to have something to show. I suppose they were trying to imitate Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin). LOL! A few of the songs in the Roll Bounce soundtrack were also post 1978. Couldn't believe the characters in the movie were supposed to not know who the Bee Gees were. Had to be living under a rock somewhere to miss Saturday Night Fever in 1977. Right up there with Star Wars in the same year. It wasn't just a white thing. I remember hearing Bee Gees music played everywhere from the mall, to the record store, to restaurants on their juke box. Totally inescapable, no matter if you liked their music or not. I was also having a hard time with the way the Southside neighborhood was portrayed in the movie. As they walked out of the skating rink that had just closed, the neighborhood appeared to be run down, and they were talking about it possibly becoming a liquor store, as if they were in the middle of the ghetto. Then when X got to his house, it was in a middle class area with a few nice brick 2 story homes nearby. His father (Chi McBride) owned a classic red Mustang. Also his girlfriend Naomi lived in a very nice house. My older cousin grew up in Chicago and was also a teen in the 70's, and this portrayal doesn't seem to fit with his description of the Southside in the 70's. It was supposedly a very rough neighborhood. Anyway, just think the movie could have been a little better if they had tried to pay attention to details and portray the Southside and the 70's like they really were. The young actors were not even born then, so they had no reference to the times. I expected to see more of Nick Cannon, but his role was very minor. Couldn't help but laugh at Wayne Brady as DJ Johnny Feelgood.
