Idiotic.

I saw this before a screening of Todd Solondz' _Palindromes_; I have to give credit to the decision to show a short before the film mixed in with the trailers -- it's a pity there are so few venues for short films -- I can't say as that I would have chosen this one. Speaking of credit given, apparently this was made in a 24-hour span. I suppose that's kind of neat, although when the film is this cliché, hackneyed and moronic, I don't think that's much of a problem. The one-line description above basically sums up the entire film; there's no real point or commentary -- just pretension. I was shocked to learn it was only 3 minutes; it seemed much longer.

My suggestion: perhaps take another day, and come up with a script, story or, well, just something that's not stupid?

Great Short Film

I really have to disagree with the previous review of Mating Call. I really like this short. The movie is ingenious and enjoyable. This film shows a unique perspective of mating / dating in New York City. In a 3 minute film, Patricio Serna compares the mating call of animals to that of the modern couple in NYC. Serna directed, wrote, and acted in the film. He has done a great job creating an amusing short film. The cinematography is also quite good. This is simply a good short film. I would expect Patricio Serna to continue to excel at creating interesting films. I hope he expands his repertoire to include full feature films. Finally, I applaud Landmark theaters for showing short films along with trailers. There are just not enough venues for short films to be seen.

Funny!!

Warning: Spoilers
Short films rarely live up to anything resembling a story or even an interesting concept. In fact many barely hold your interest for more than 30 seconds OR your interest is held only because you can't believe someone actually made this. Shorts are a wonderful way for filmmakers to get their start or express a theme which they wish to explore. However what's to express if nobody wants to see your films? I've easily seen over 100 shorts (not a high number I know) but I can pretty much recall only 15 (more or less) that actually stand out for their quality, story, execution, acting etc. Now, I'm happy to say that one of these is this short, Mating Call, which I was fortunate enough to catch the other day at a Landmark Theater (thanks and kudos for stepping up to this venture by the way). Is it funny?? You bet your bottom dollar it is!! What's so funny about some girl savagely screaming her way across the city in search of her perfect mate?? Everything! Maybe it was the way that she was so impassioned in her quest of finding "the one" who responded to her calls or maybe it was that as her exhausting search went on, the primal yelps of love became more bronchial (in stereo sound) as she would run across a plaza or a park, or maybe it was the encounter with her "mate" itself, which I won't reveal the details. However, it so poignantly summarized mating rituals among people, and exposes our insecurities when it comes down to "can we live up to" the expectations that we set for ourselves? Its a simple film with a simple message and it works wonderfully. It is what I believe a short film should be and which knows and properly uses its format. Short, sweet and resounding. Keep 'em coming!!
