a majestic view of a boy's efforts to hold on to the family
willbekinsale-18 May 2004
From the moment it begins - it's beautiful. But behinds it's beauty lies a desperate struggle for a son to keep his family together while his mother is schizoid. The boy in this film is incredible. The director's lightness of touch with his performance is stunning.

There are so many touching moments here, like when the mum leaves the house, forgetting to dress, so the son puts an old net curtain on her to make her respectable. Or when the nurse in the waiting room tries to help him but he rejects her offer as it's plainly just lip service.

A brilliant film which deserved to win the BAFTA as did the director's previous film SKIN DEEP.

Heartbreaking snapshot of the effects of mental illness
Havan_IronOak11 September 2004
This short, like the director's earlier work, Skin Deep is told from the point of view of a tortured young man. In his earlier piece the torture was caused by the young man's mixed race and the prejudices that surrounds him. In this piece it deals with an even younger young man who watches as his mentally ill mother goes in for her medication.

Its obvious that a mentally ill single mother has no business raising a family of five but it's equally obvious that the young man is terrified that his family will be split up.

In both works the point of view is that of a young man who is in a bad situation through no fault of his own and who has an inkling that he could escape the situation at the cost of others. In both cases the young man remains in the bad situation at great personal cost.

This film maker is truly remarkable and I look forward to seeing his next work.
