Nothing like Trekkies.
deancapetanelis20 November 2005
OK so I saw this DVD at Target for three bucks and thought well you couldn't even rent it at that price so I'd be a fool not to buy it. What is it? It's a bare bones look at the lives some people lived out while waiting in line for a movie. Now OK some folks will think Fanboy or Geek or Nerd and dismiss these people as fools for sleeping on the sidewalk along Hollywood Blvd. Not me, I find them fascinating. Fascinating in the same way I find Phish Phans or Baby Boomers living in converted school buses following the Grateful Dead around North America fascinating. I like people who are into their own thing and don't care who knows.

These are raw nerds in their native habitat doing the nerd things they'd be doing whether the camera was there or not. The film captures this. That the film doesn't go into the whole Star Wars fan scene all over the country might disappoint people who think the documentary "Trekkies" is high culture. The film is not about Star Wars it's about people who want to see Star Wars in a particular theater on opening day. And that's what the film delivers.

Had to give this a 10: Loved it!

Warning: Spoilers
I can't stress how much I love this film. I own it on DVD. It's about a group of people who sit out in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater, waiting to see "Attack of the Clones". I can't give any plot information like how they deal with their unbearable boredom or how they go to the bathroom. But I can say, this is one of the most fun documentaries ever! Here are a few facts: Some of them even have girlfriends, who have strung along with them, sleeping out on the street. People even ask them questions and make fun of them. There's a guy named Grimlock that makes some people want to laugh and others want to think: What's up with this guy? He is offered by Good morning America ten thousand dollars to give up his place in line. Other whimsical and funny characters build up to prove that you can still be a small independent film and be one of the greatest of all time.

Makes an hour and twenty minutes really feel like six weeks

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this at the store the day Episode Three came out on DVD. Previously, another documentary called Starwoids had followed buildup and line wait for Episode One, and this one follows the lineup for Episode Two (plus a follow up on the Episode Three lineup) so I thought it might be a good followup.

What I got was little more than someone's home movie. A dull, and completely uninteresting look at the highly overrated "experience" of spending six weeks of your life waiting for a movie. The "colorful cast of characters" as promised on the package were a bunch of exceedingly typical fanboys who'se efforts at trying to be eccentric and/or just seemed exceedingly forced. They were trying far too hard to prove how cool they were to the camera. For the most part the people came across as crass, unpleasant, and not the kind of company you would'nt want to keep for a month.

The filmmakers just had so little to work with in the first place. Trying to make an event like this interesting at all is a difficult endeavor. . The emphasis on the day to day events building up to the first showing just made the whole film drag along at glacial pace. The unfortunate truth is that none of these people are really that interesting and the film just failed to make the event of waiting for Star Wars seem like nothing but a colossal waste of time.

Most fandom documentaries don't focus on just one little facet such as this. By doing so the filmmakers missed a lot of chances to explore the truly interesting elements of fandom. The narrowness of the movie ended up being it's greatest flaw and ultimately not worth the effort.

A funny reality look at people who happen to be waiting in line.

Warning: Spoilers
I picked this up on the Star Wait web site and I couldn't be happier. This was really funny. It's in the style of a light hearted reality show, not documentary, so be prepared for that. The film takes us through 6 weeks of these fans that wait in line for Star Wars. Some are fan-boy types but most are not which is what makes this film so enjoyable. Instead of giving us the typical "Look at these crazy fans and their collections" Star Wait keeps its focus on the line for the entire film and rarely touches on the fan mentality. Instead its focus is on certain "colorful characters" that you would never expect to see waiting in line for Star Wars. Yes, there is Grimlock who thinks he is a Trasformer but unlike most Sci-Fi "nerds" his life in the line is all about hitting on the women that walk by Hollywood Blvd. There is also Art who is a pretty boy muscle head who protects the more timid line members. Corey is the wise cracking sarcastic funny one and Josh is the wanna be mohawk wearing punk rocker who talked to George Lucas on the lines pay phone. Like I said, hardly your typical fan-boys.

And the extra commentaries are awesome! They include the guys from MST3k, stars of Freaks and Geeks, Amy Allen from Star Wars, the always hot Paget Brewster (they should have included more pictures of her) and my favorite, Paul F. Tompkins who was really funny in this.

If you are looking for another boring dull fan-boy documentary on Sci-Fi fans, this isn't it. This is a refreshing and creative take on reality shows and fan documentaries. For $10 it's a must see DVD.
