This quiet but forceful film emphasizes the difference between neurotic fear of loneliness and the normal experience of loneliness. There is a dramatic contrast between stories of a normal, loving family where troubles are faced together and that of a lone child bereft of her mother and clinging desperately to her father until his remarriage threatens her faith in men. Her resulting neurosis is convincingly resolved via psychological counseling. The dated scenario is nonetheless well directed and acted. THE LONELY NIGHT is a virtually forgotten film that deserves rediscovery.
