Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • Unlike other versions, Carmen is murdered while nearly nude in a public church.

Violence & Gore

  • Over the course of the film, a man kills three other men out of jealousy and ends the film by killing the woman who made him jealous.
  • While it is staged rather poetically and without blood, the murder of Carmen is especially upsetting in this version because she is completely naked except for a shawl that she wraps around herself as Don Jose stabs her. In contrast to other versions, in which she appears tough right up until the end, the final scene in this version makes her seem especially vulnerable.
