Cue the Gorilla
boblipton14 June 2013
Monty Collins and his bride, Lucille Hutton, drive into a gypsy camp pursued by a cop who looks like Andy Clyde. Is that Jack Lloyd as the gypsy chief? Enquiring minds want to know. Anyway, the gypsy chief wants to swap wives and a gorilla appears to kidnap Lucille. In the end, everything is sorted out.

There's a randomness to the gags in this one-reeler directed by Jules White that make it less than excellent. On the other hand, Monty Collins is relatively engaging and knows how to perform the stunts.

This was as far as he got. He would shortly be reduced to the ranks of supporting comics again, although he would work steadily, usually for Jules White. He got a few good licks in, particularly in support of Buster Keaton. This movie won't convince you to seek out more Monty Collins comedies, but it will keep you engaged for the ten minutes it lasts.

A gorilla?!?!

"Wedding Slips" has a few good moments....and a few bad ones as well. It stars Monte Collins and is directed by Jules White, who directed many of the Three Stooges shorts.

When the story begins, Monte and his new wife are driving off for a honeymoon. But Monte is so love-struck that he drives like a maniac...nearly running over the sheriff AND landing in a camp of Gypsies*. Soon some very random gags occur...one of which involves, inexplicably, the leader of the Gypsies dressed in a gorilla suit!

The problem with this short and why I couldn't score it higher is that the gags are so completely random at times....as if they were drawing ideas out of a fish bowl! It has a few nice moments but also lacks coherence. Watchable but not much more.

*I know the term 'Gypsy' is no longer considered politically correct. 'Roma' or 'Romani' are preferred and the stereotype of them all being criminals is also pretty dated. Don't blame me...I'm just reporting what's in the film!
