Nourish the Beast
g4akl11 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
If you ever have the opportunity to watch the very funny play, Nourish the Beast, I'd like to recommend that you do. It is about a very eccentric family consisting of a husband and wife with an adult daughter and son. And the camera thief that the son (a cop) couldn't bear to take to jail.

In some ways the family reminds me of the equally nutty family in the more well known play and movie titled 'You Can't Take It with You'. However the characters in 'You Can't Take It with You' were blissfully unaware of just how weird they were. In 'Nourish the Beast' the characters are a little more angst filled (although no less eccentric). In this play assorted family members are not really blood-related at all but were added to the family when they responded to advertisements that the main character had placed in a newspaper.

This play is very funny due to the revelations and interactions of the family members. In fact the most 'normal' character of the bunch is the camera thief who is handcuffed to the radiator throughout most of the action.

The family, the mom reminds me of My surragote mom growing up, age 15. Odd npbut lovely, warm and mainly loving. Great.

I so want to see this again

I was 15 when I saw this quirky little play and only remember a few things from it (a soliloquy involving an unconscious delivery guy and the explanation for the title), but I remember thinking it was hilarious and brilliant; one of the best plays I ever saw on PBS (along with The Lady's not for Burning, Norman Conquests, and Steambath).

Would I like it if I saw it today? Sadly, there's no way to know. I have searched the internet and this seems to be a movie that does not exist in any form here (although it appears some actors use a monologue from it in auditions).

Anyway, 15-year-old me loved this.
