An interesting docu-drama

This film was conceived as a propaganda piece, made for the Australian Department of Immigration to allay the fears of the Australian population about the large numbers of non-British DPs allowed to enter Australia after World War II.

As such, its quite an interesting portrayal of a typical refugee situation: the couple are shown marrying as war is about to break out, then being separated when Mike is drafted into a labour battalion in Germany, then reunited in the DP camp, before finally going through a gruelling interview with Australian Immigration.

It's a strange situation, as the interview was real, but the rest of the story was recreated by the two DPs for the film crew.

In the end, the Department of Immigration decided not to promote the film, and it was little seen. But it is an informative portrait of the source of many of Australia's post-war immigrants.
