A dog of a film.
planktonrules3 July 2023
"Crack-Up" is a short adventure film which looks cheap in pretty much every way. The acting isn't great and the plot, well, it's odd.

The film begins with Dave's little brother somehow starting and airplane and taking off. Considering the kid looks about 4, this is odd and strains your sense of disbelief. Well, in a ridiculous stunt, Dave steals a plane and manages to jump onto the runaway plane and save his brother. But the guy whose plane he took is a baddie and decides to then convict Dave of a robbery he didn't commit AND send his little brother to an orphanage! The only one who can save them is Flash the dog!

The makers of the film were obviously trying to cash in on Rin-Tin-Tin's success in films. But this German Shepherd isn't quite as photogenic and his co-stars aren't much either. Overall, a ridiculous story that even in 1934 must have caused a few groans.

Doesn't Flash Has A Pilot's License?

William Desmond steals $5,000 and frames David Sharpe for the theft. This leaves it to Flash the Wonder Dog to rescue little Billy Steuer from the orphanage, feed him, recover the money, get Billy into a parachute, defeat Desmond in hand-to-paw combat and generally save the day. To be fair, Sharpe does crash a plane, so that's something that Flash doesn't have to do.

This is the second Flash The Wonder Dog short I have seen and like the other, it's pretty bad. It's idiotically plotted, poorly acted, and edited at a pace that packs eight minutes of action into twenty. Flash is a handsome German Shepherd, but while he can save the day, he can't save this short subject.

These are the notes from the program booklet before the film was identified:

SPOILERS:

"A daredevil flyer, David, flirts with the waitress in a café, Mary. The villain enters and sees the two flirting. A little boy, Billy, accidentally takes off in an un-maned biplane which leads to the hero taking off in the villain's plane, jumping to the boy's plane and saving the day. The villain's plane crashes in the rescue and while he claims to be alright with it, he calls the authorities to report that there has been a hold-up and that David has the $5,000 in cash. David gets arrested and Mr. Rogers also has Billy picked up by welfare workers."

Note, the dog (hero) also fights with the villain.
