Underrated
kikiboo_814 May 2022
I used to watch this long ago, when I was little. Cause my older brother loved it and then I kind of liked it too. The theme song is pretty catchy. And the show is super fun to watch, in fact I'd say this one is heavily underrated, while some other superhero/tough guy cartoons are way more popular without much reason. But oh well. Definitely a cool cartoon.

Pretty Original
I still have some of the episodes I taped off my now obsolete GE video. Anyway, this was a good and original cartoon, occasionally pairing Conan with a few allies here and there. The story was corny and childish but I was a child when I watched it so it was perfect and I would still appreciate it now.

Awesome!

This cartoon is a true epic. A rollicking adventure tale set in the fantasy world of Hyboria, it portrays a more kid friendly version of my favorite barbarian, but never fails to entertain. The animation is high quality, and the voice acting is top notch. The episodes are very cleverly written, and and offer up something different with each adventure. There is a huge amount of variety to the characters, and the fact that all of the heroes come from different cultures is pretty cool. Scott Mcneil does an excellent job as the evil wizard Wrath-Amon. This was my favorite cartoon as a child and I strongly recommend it to the young and the young at heart.

Mighty Adventurer
hellraiser726 November 2018
This is another one of my favorite animated shows of all time. I'm a fan of the Conan franchise Conan is one of my favorite fictional heroes, my first experience with the franchise was seeing the 1982 film when I was about 8 years old, I love the stories from Robert E. Howard, as well as the comic books from both Marvel and Dark Horse. Seeing this an animated series based on this was a dream come true.

The animation is great, I really love the background animation as it really captures the look and feel of a world that possibly existed before our birth, it's a place that is both fascinating and dangerous at the same time, there is fantasy but a small sense there is a little bit or reality involved as some of the customs we see are somewhat familiar to what we have in the present and locations are based on ones from lost civilizations. I really like the character animation, people look like people which has became a lost practice in most animated shows which when you think about it is kind of weird.

The action is solid, it's true we don't see gore effects like you normally would from the Conan stories since this is a kids show. But that doesn't bother me as the action is well choregraphed we still see Conan doing what he does best, kicking ass and taking names with his cool Atlantean sword, fists, and muscle. Likewise, with the rest of his compatriots. Really like the music mainly the theme song which is one of my favorite theme songs of all time. It's a bit funny from the chorus singing in an overly masculine tone and a little of that plot synopsis told but at the same time it really gets you pumped knowing your in for one heck of an adventure with a tough hero to get behind with. What really powers and drives the show is in its story, structure, characters, along with the development in those areas. I really love the story which is loosely inspired/based on Robert E. Howard's Conan stories. This show walks that fine line of having its own take on the Conan stories and the world he inhabits while at the same time staying true to it as most of what I recognize from the franchise is there.

Some of the concept of the plot which is a bit like John Carpenters "They Live" in a way this show is the closest we'll probably get to an animated series of that movie. Rathamon and the rest of Set's snake race all use mystical guises to look like regular mortals which makes them both dangerous and a little creepy as deception is probably the most dangerous as it means they can look like the next person you pass by and slip though and do certain things out of our sight.

I really like the structure where the episodes weren't all random but went with an ongoing plot development which at the time wasn't common place in animated shows nor even live action shows so this show somewhat predates shows like "Once Upon a Time", "24" etc. As we see there are some arcs, even some episodes that have some crucial info you don't want to dare miss as it plays into what goes on latter on, but I also like that this show in some episodes included some of the Robert E Howard's stories retold in this show, like there was one episode that had the character Valeria shame she didn't become a permanent edition in the show which I'll admit was sort of a lost opportunity.

The characters are great as they have a great voice cast behind them whom are composed of some of my favorite voice actors. I really like how well rounded the characters are both good and bad and both possess a certain amount of depth and development. There is not one character I hate except for Needle whom is one of the only bad things about the show just another typical comic relief no one asked for as he's fraking annoying though useful in some instances and thankfully not in the episode too long.

The Good Guys: Conan voiced by Michael Donovan is just perfect as Conan, his voice just fits like a glove, whenever I read some of the comic, I always imagine his voice. This version of Conan is a little different like we don't see the Bond like womanizer aspect it's a kids show after all but also the same as some things about Conan are still there. I really can emphasize with Conan on many aspects, how fiercely determined he is on his quests, the savage fierceness and thrust for adventure and battle, takes crap from no one and nothing man or beast, has strong emotions carries within him a inferno rage toward Rathamon and what he did to his parents, but what I really love about the guy is that he is a doer, he does what he feels is right to suit his whatever desire comes to mind and just whatever he sets himself out to do, and will let nothing and no one stop him.

Jasmine voiced by Janyse Jaud whom is one of my favorite voice actresses as usual has hot vocals and is hot in real life (yeah had a crush on her). Anyway, I really love her character Jasmine whom is awesome one of my favorite female protagonists. She's a tough girl that has got just acrobatic and martial arts skills, her specialty weapon is the shuriken's which can always return to her wrist holster safely. That feature is awesome as it allows you to throw the desired amount without having to worry about ammo conservation or if you miss your able to receive another chance. But I really love her persona as she's fiercely independent, won't take sexist crap, but also despite a touch exterior she really does have warm compassion underneath.

Zula whom is voiced by Scott McNeil a favorite voice actor whom really supplies a lot of the voices in this show as he also voices the main villain Wrath Amon and good guy Grey Wolf. The voice for this character is cool, he sounds like Destro from "G.I. Joe" and I honestly thought it was that same voice actor but it wasn't. His character is a bit like "The Beastmaster" as he has the mystical skill to summon and communicate with animals to come to his aid. But he's a good number 2 for Conan as he really does look out for Conan and has a level headedness in the dynamic and passive aggressiveness that Conan lacks sometimes.

Bad Guys: Wrath Amon he's pretty much Thorth Amon from the Conan franchise but they changed the name for some unknown reason but same difference. He's a good villain sort of an honorable mention in my favorite animated villains. This guy is true to his name, as he is just a real ruthless power mongering b......, just does everything in his power to accomplish his primary goal as well as employ every dirty tactic in the book to destroy or thwart his enemies mainly Conan, little knowing what he's doing is just adding more fuel to Conan's rage, like pouring gasoline onto a bonfire.

Wing Fang is pretty cool as he's a humanoid dragon but what really makes him stand out is that he's the most tragic when we discover more about his past and the Beauty and the Beast like dynamic between both Jasmine and him which I thought was sweet, there should have been more development and more episodes/arc with those two which I'll admit is one weakness of the show, maybe if there was another season there would have been but there wasn't which is weakness two.

Mesmira voiced by Kathleen Barr another favorite voice actress, whom is sort of like Evil Lyn from "He-man" or Queen Beryl from "Sailor Moon", whom is hot with that outfit and everything (yeah I have a thing for bad girls), she pretty much the typical evil sorceress archetype that craves power and has a bit of a domineering complex as she not just want dominance of power but Conan by her side.

It would be awesome if we had another animated Conan series but one for the adult audience, so we can have the gore and other things we know and love about Conan, or better yet a live action series (a good one mind you) but put it on a premium channel, it's a thought to consider anyway.

If you're a fan of the Conan franchise just like any hidden discovery Conan uncovers it's well worth discovering, Conan the Adventurer is mighty fun.

Watch it - If you can find it...
crazedmaster19 August 2006
I remember how great this show was when I first watched it as a kid. I recently purchased a DVD set of the entire series. After a decade, this show is just good as I remember it. Although aimed for children, there are some adult-oriented themes, something that went over my head as a kid. The series is great, with a remarkable amount of continuity from episode to episode (for a cartoon). The series was released on DVD, consisting of 16 volumes!! And it is only available in PAL DVD format. However, if you are interested in purchasing the series, keep your eye on Ebay, as it comes up for sale from time to time. When I have to money, I will likely purchase the high Quality DVDs for my future children to watch...

Truly a great cartoon

One of the best cartoons of the early 90's
Selebii6 May 2003
This was by far a great cartoon. It got so deep into the characters and there was never a dull episode. I hope they put this on DVD someday and by Crom let it be soon! It's seldom found on tv anymore and should be the one of the first cartoons put on DVD. From the first episode where the star metal fell to the last episode and it's climactic ending, this was a masterpiece.

Two Thumbs WAY UP!!!
connordowling22 August 2009
This was the best cartoon I have ever seen. It is an intricate part of my childhood. I also used to watch it right before school every morning. It is an excellent continuing story of Conan in a quest to save his family from the spell of living stone. His main antagonist is Wrathamon the head serpent man who is trying to bring back the evil snake deity Set. The key to the destruction and success of the serpent men is this metal that fell from the heavens called star metal. It can banish the serpent men to the abyss and return their master Set. It is a good length of 64 episodes. The characters are well developed and well interleaved into the story line. And the coolest plus of the Series Conan learns to be a NINJA!!!

Fictional Story but realistic problem solving
jcchee7 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I like the plot of this story in the sense that no episode is wasted. most of the guests characters who Conan helped during the previous episodes showed up again in the final episodes who, in turn return the favor and help our at that exact instant that he is about to get beaten. Perfect example of "what goes around, comes around" The main antagonist "Set" is defeated not just by Conan, but by all his friends whom he helped along the way. This makes the climax even more fantastic as the amount of help needed to subdue this villain only emphasizers how overwhelming the enemy is. I'm really happy that I watched this show when I was younger. And I hope I can get a copy of this series for my children!

The best screen adaptation of Conan ever. By far too.
jakedann9 January 2022
It is so interesting and baffling too that an animated series which was made purely for a young audience too remains the best screen iteration of Conan. By far too. It surpasses all the movie and TV series film adaptations made after it. Everything about it was so well made and so cool too. Starting with his sword which although was not consistent with the books' stories and had a mystical and supernatural origin, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED. I liked that bluish color and especially the design. I mean it is SO DAMN COOL. His friends are some of the best characters ever put on screen. Conan himself was brilliantly designed, both character and physique-wise. It's amazing how no real-life actor managed to portray Conan the way he is supposed to be: a balance of barbarian roughness and a high moral character. The 1997 series made him an overly moralistic and (thus) lame overgrown character that had nothing to do with Conan in fact... This series, even though it was made for children managed to capture that balance perfectly. Rough, sometimes crude and very tough but with a great moral character. Who was also capable of gentleness and of course, a very fair man. The series' main antagonist was also one of the coolest and badass villains ever put on screen. On the other end, in the 1997 series, the villain was a weakling old fart who could barely move and was constantly talking to a skull in boiling water... :)))))) The stories' arcs were also amazing in this show. You would not expect the kind of suspense and adrenaline this shows provides from a kids show but by golly, the producers and writers did it. There are not enough good things that I can say about this series and I just wish this had been an adult oriented show LOL.

Squawk! Big dumb barbarian!
conianzxr23 October 2006
This was a fantastic animated child-friendly version of Conan the Cimmerian.

Conan embarks on a quest to save his parents, who had been turned into stone by servants of the evil snake-god Sett. He picks up allies on the way, indeed a hawk man, a wizard, a jungle guy and some foxy chick with throwing stars.

Also with Conan, is his comedy sidekick Needle, a small cowardly Phoenix who is the only funny cartoon sidekick ever. Sod Snarf from thunder-cats, or that lil red floating thing on dungeons and dragons, Needle has a genuine charm and his manic screeching hardly ever crossed the line from comedic to annoying.

Conan battles the evil Roth-Amon on an almost weekly basis, culminating in an epic battle against Sett himself. This show made my childhood complete!

Two words: This was a radical show!!!
Zuhalter22 November 2004
This show made me late for school in the early 90's, as it was on right around the 7:00 hour when I had to go. I'd usually wait until the last possible moment, in front of a bowl of Cap'n Crunch, before running off to catch my bus.

I have vague recollections of the show itself. I remember that Conan used to pair up with one of his "friends" (I seem to remember one of them being a hawk person of some kind) to go battle evil. Each friend had a unique ability and persona...as well as a hazy relationship with the protagonist. There was also an arch-villain who meant Conan and his friends ill will. I don't remember who, or what he/she/they were, but I'm sure they were fierce.

That's about all I can remember...but if you ever get a chance to see an episode, just keep in mind how awesome the show is, and you will find peace.

Better then the live action series
demon_star200222 January 2004
I only got to see this show a couple of times, but i could tell from the first one I saw that it was better and more accurate than that awful live action series of the same name.

They actually drew from Howard's world of Hyborea for the supporting character instead of the bunch of "Hercules" rejects they had on the later show.

Just keep in mind it was a kids show (but one that was at least sympathetic to Howard's work) and you'll enjoy it. Assuming it ever turns up again.

Conan: The Adventurer
Terryfan26 February 2015
The 1990s has a collection of original animation works and Conan The Adventurer is one of them.

I remember seeing this show on Fox Kids just before going to school.

Conan The Mightiest Warrior Ever, along with hi s friends Needle, Jezmine, Snagg, Zula and Greyworf as they do battle with the wizard Wrath-Amon.

It's plot feature Conan has he tries to undo the spell of living stone cast upon his family because of Wrath-Amon.

It's a shame the show wasn't given a longer run but with the run it got it was a interesting series looking back on it.

It feature very good characters, Excellent hand drawn animation, superb music.

Also the theme and intro is one of the best ones I ever seen and gets you pump to watch the show.

The show had some good strong character development with a original plot that you don't see too much anymore. It also helps that the show feature some talented voice acting as their performance helps makes you want to learn more about these characters.

Conan The Adventurer is a very good show and should be watch by anyone with a passion for animation

The show in a nutshell
skyanimal25 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
The series revolved around Conan and a mysterious "star metal." A meteor shower in episode one resulted in the discovery of this mystical metal that was as good as steel and had an unique color. But other then that, it was nothing spectacular. Conan's father, a blacksmith, forged a magnificent sword and placed it in a sort of tomb, with a heavy stone slab covering it. He told Conan that he would not get the sword till he was old (and strong) enough to remove the stone slab.

Years passed and Conan became strong, and a fighter. Men answering to an evil wizard general appeared, looking for star metal. They killed Conan's father and took whatever star metal they could find. Conan retrieved the sword and set out to seek vengeance.

Now, as he journeyed, Conan encountered others who possessed star metal and through their own tales, ended up joining him in his cause to fight the serpent men. (Close proximity to the metal revealed their true faces.) Most notable was a female circus performer with shuriken and a African prince who could summon and control animals, he had a whip. His other constant companion was a young phoenix bird, that could become an emblem on Conan's shield and sleep. Other friends included a viking with an axe and a wizard with a magical staff. (I can't recall any others but think their might have been one more, but the wizard was a scarce character, likely due to how powerful he was.) The primary drive of the serpent men was to collect all the star metal they could find (Conan's father had made a lot of weapons and items) and use that to make the apexes of pyramids. This was to create a portal to another dimension ruled by the snake god. The star metal, though, not only revealed the true face of the serpent men, but when struck, sent the serpent men back to their dimension. Their wizard-general who led them could survive a strike, but if hit enough, also would disappear.

BIG SPOILER The serpentmen eventually did succeed in making enough pyramid apexes and opened a portal for their snake god to journey through. Conan fought the god (can't recall if on earth or in the other dimension) and narrowly won.
