100 YEARS OF HORROR is a 26-episode TV series made in 1996 and featuring the delightful Christopher Lee as host, his sonorous narration exploring the history of horror cinema in the 20th century. Each themed episode contains plentiful clips from the films mentioned along with brief interview footage seemingly culled from other documentaries as well as TV shows and the like.
FREAKS is a self-explanatory title for this episode of the show, with Tod Browning's infamous (and banned) movie of the same title being much discussed. Indeed, physical deformity as a whole is explored in horror cinema, with actors Reggie Nalder and Rondo Hatton somewhat offensively being lumped in to the mix. The work of Lon Chaney is particularly interesting and Charles Laughton pops up for his turn in THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME.
