The trick to enjoying this movie...
queenahsilat3 January 2011
I have to say the synopsis to this movie is a bit misleading. The task at hand seems interesting enough. You have this woman being 'set-up' with a black man because she has never been with a man of her race. Through the course of this movie however, this goal becomes less and less relevant. If you are a part of the masses that set their mind on the plot point in the synopsis and expects that that is the story to be focused on, this is NOT the movie for you. The most interesting part is everything but.Instead what we get is a candid look into the process of setting up this woman. We get a somewhat devious but well meaning matchmaker, and a random bar scene that is pure gold. Marlene simply becomes an afterthought after a while and the objective gets lost in the shuffle.

Disappointment waste of time

Warning: Spoilers
This film was a big disappointment. It sounded good and promised a lot that it did not deliver. It was very frustrating to watch and eventually realize that nothing much was going to happen. The best part was an unexpected encounter at a bar with a woman who really was the most candid and interesting person in the film. She was honest to the point of being blunt and it was amusing to see how excited yet uncomfortable the men felt in response.

Anyway, the point is that this film is not what it seems to be. The set-up does not pay off. But even worse is that the film gives a really bad impression of black men. They come off as liars, deceivers, cheaters, people who make promises that they don't keep, people whose speech is barely coherent, etc. And these are all professional successful men with careers. If someone had not dated black men before they saw this film, they probably would be less likely to date them after seeing it. I think the filmmaker may not realize how bad an impression it makes.

The only way this film could have been improved is if more women were in it who said these guys were not typical. But maybe they are typical. Maybe I'm lucky that I've had better experiences with black men than the guys in this film...

More realistic than all the reality T.V programs
Superdracula26 February 2006
This is more of an art film that's why though. Basically it spans 4 days and is the story of a black women from West Africa (maryline) who has come to America and through meeting Jon Marc (creator and Chuck D's cousin) via a friend says she's never experienced a black man before only white. Richard black isn't a character or a person in the film, black meaning colour and Richard meaning the long form of a nick name (and if you haven't already guessed it's dick). So Jon Marc goes and tries to find a black man for her. This film is totally candid and was filmed unknowingly to those who were participating which makes for good viewing. If you have a grudge for watching reality T.V then this is good because it doesn't try to be what reality T.V is mostly. it's more than just a movie about blind dates and becomes very surprising. Well worth watching
