A joyous Meistersinger
TheLittleSongbird27 July 2011
I love opera and I like Wagner a great deal. I am very fond of Die Meistersinger Von Nurnberg, it is Wagner's most light-hearted opera but also one of his most demanding and perhaps his longest. All the same this is a wonderful production. The orchestra and conducting makes the most of the brilliant score, and the costumes and sets are of sumptuous quality. The sound and picture quality as well as the video directing of Brian Large are superb. The singing is wonderful, best of all being Bernd Weikl who is one of the best Hans Sachs I've seen. MariAnne Haggander's Eva is suitably coquettish and compassionate, Siegfried Jerusalem is more than acceptable as Walter, Graham Clark is an energetic David with an interesting voice and while Beckmesser is a real pain as a character, as well as bringing that to the performance, and singing and acting beautifully, Hermann Prey also makes us feel for him. Overall, a joyous and wonderful production. 10/10 Bethany Cox
