Interrupted Lovers review

An early attempt at a narrative that should at least be praised for trying something different, even if it is pretty crude. It's no wonder nearly ten years passed before fictional movies began to really take hold - the acting here is beyond awful.

The shovel is a favorite of over-protective dads . . .
cricket305 February 2013
Warning: Spoilers
. . . since a hefty guy can easily induce a fatal level of blunt force trauma to a daughter and her lover--then find the perfect tool right at hand to dig a double grave and erase all evidence of this crime against humanity. Tom Edison, the guy who knew the public would eat up footage of an elephant being given a literal hotfoot during a public electrocution, has his crew open INTERRUPTED LOVERS (obviously, the correct title, straight from the U.S. government Library of Congress) with a smirking brother snitching on his sister and her beau to their dad. This father comes raging onto the scene--shovel-ready--from stage right, an uncouth hulking brute, kicking first his daughter, then her beau, and then his daughter again in their butts with his work boots. His obvious intention is to cripple the young pair of lovebirds, so he can dispatch them at his leisure, having left them no means of escape. The only mystery here is whether Dad intended to dig their grave himself, or if the ogre would delegate this bit of dirty work to his smarty-pants son. Hopefully this bit of "entertainment" is staged and fictitious, rather than a true tragedy such as THE LONE FISHERMAN.

Nice Mix of Action and Comedy

Interrupted Lovers (1896)

In terms of story this is a fairly simple film from Edison. A man and woman sneak off to a bench where they sit down and begin to cuddle before a couple gardeners then sneak up on them and chase them away. I guess you could say this was the perfect mix of romance, comedy and action as this 22-second film features all three. The film certainly isn't anything ground breaking and it's certainly not the greatest thing Edison ever did but it has a fair amount of charm that makes it worth watching. The fighting between the man and the gardener is pretty funny as is seeing the "naughty" behavior of the couple, which of course amounts to nothing by today's standards. It's doubtful those who hate these old movies will change their opinions based on the quality of this film but for fans it's a little gem.

Forgettable romance-drama snippet
Horst_In_Translation12 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Romance is not really too common in the very early days of cinema apart from the famous "The Kiss" of course, so i was a bit curious about this short film. It was rather disappointing though. A couple sit down on a park bench and start making out, hugging and kissing. Two guys approach and disturb them. No real motivation behind it, just a stupid prank I guess and the execution of the prank is not really interesting either. It's actually even unclear what exactly they are doing to separate the couple. Oh well, joke's on them as the couple will hopefully go home now and do much more than kissing, while the pranksters can continue their pointless trolling with somebody else. Not really recommended.
