Spanish actress and activist Pilar Bardem—mother of actors Monica, Carlos, and Javier Bardem—died on Saturday at the Ruber Hospital in Madrid because of complications from lung disease not related to Covid-19. She was 82.
The Goya Award-winning actress (the Spanish equivalent of an Oscar) appeared in a variety of film, theater, and TV projects throughout her career in her native Spain. Her most highly lauded project is 1995’s Nadie hablará de nosotras cuando hayamos muerto (Nobody Will Speak of Us When We’re Dead), which earned 8 Goya awards, including Bardem’s Best Supporting Actress nod.
“We want to share the news that Pilar Bardem, our mother, our example, has died,” Carlos shared via Twitter in Spanish. “She departed in peace and without suffering, surrounded by the love of her family. We know the love and admiration many felt for her, both in Spain and beyond, for her work as...

It's the time again: Reader Questions hooray. I picked 8 to answer this week. Thanks to everyone who asked. I can't answer all but who knows - the unanswered might well inspire something down the road, conciously or otherwise. You never know...
Marsha: Are people like Ted Cruz, Mitch McConnell, and Donald Trump just so evil and insane that they are beyond parody, or are there actors and directors you can think of who could convey their humanity and worldview?
Nathaniel: Marsha, I promised I wasn't going to talk about politics until September, remember?!? Don't tempt me. All I will say is that a great actor can perform magic even under impossible circumstances. Remember how deep Julianne Moore was able to go with Sarah Palin?
Jb: Can we discuss Drop Dead Gorgeous. In spite of having all the right ingredients, it's never quite hit cult (gay) status like I always assumed it would.

Just as intriguing as the Xenomorphs in some of the previous Alien films are the people that encounter them. The group in Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien: Covenant still has plenty of open slots, but some seats on what could be a wild ride have been taken, with Demián Bichir the latest person to climb aboard the project.
Variety (via Deadline) reports that Bichir has been set to join the cast of Alien: Covenant in an unknown role. A follow-up film to the Alien prequel, Prometheus, Alien: Covenant will feature Michael Fassbender reprising his role as the android David and will also star Katherine Waterston (Steve Jobs). Danny McBride (Pineapple Express, Eastbound & Down) is also in talks for a co-starring role.
Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in 2011’s A Better Life, Bichir recently co-starred as Bob in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight and...

The Mentalist invited fans to a "Wedding in Red" this week, as Rigsby popped the question to Grace and the two had one of the quickest engagements on TV.
Below, TV Fanatic Christine Orlando is joined by The Mentalist fans Foresti Purge, @nehakatti and Nerwen Aldarion to debate where McAllister ranks on the Red John list and if Grace's choice in wedding attire was just a little too weird.
-------------------------------------------
What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Forseti Purge: When Jane ruins the wedding the first time. It's hilarious in a dark, sociopathic way, kind of like drug dealers going to twelve-step meetings to peddle drugs, but this is why we like Jane. Irl he'd be living in a supermax now, but his selling point is that he couldn't care less about limits, and this scene shows us just that.
@nehakatti: So many amazing scenes! From jane helping Lisbon...

Gilmore Girls premiered season three on September 24, 2002. It kicked off with drama, as Rory came home for her last year of high school to find Jess with another girl. Later on, she dealt with boy problems between Jess and Dean, along with the non-stop comedy from her family.
In addition, Lorelai dealt with some issues of her own. Between her hilarious arguments with Emily, and "motherly talks" with Rory, there was never a boring moment when she was in the scene!
Want to go back and remember some of the most hilarious moments from Season 3? We've posted the most memorable Gilmore Girls quotes from that time below:
Lorelai: (about Emily's manipulative tactics) She's like Lyndon Johnson with the Senate. Effortless. | permalink Young Christopher: (in flashback, about baby Rory) She's pretty.
Young Lorelai: She's perfect.
Young Christopher: I guess this means we have to get married now. | permalink Jess: If a horse-drawn carriage shows up here,...

Believe it or not, early in his career Javier Bardem was known for his smouldering good looks, and not his outstanding performances; he didn't even get credited for being in No News From God (an underrated gem of a film starring Penelope Cruz). In the last decade, that's all changed, and his latest Oscar-nominated performance in Biutiful is no exception, a movie seemingly made for someone who can entrance an audience just by his presence.
Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, 21 Grams) has a penchant for examining the less glamorous aspects of the human condition and finding incredible beauty in it, in the send of a flower that forces its way through cracked pavement to produce a small, startling bloom.
In Biutiful, Uxbal (Bardem) is a man doing what he can to care for his family, a middle man on the edge of legality and realities. Uxbal sees what most of us...

Does Jackie actually have feelings for Eddie?
That was the main question on my mind as soon as "Caregiver" faded to black.
Throughout season one, it was never fully explained why Jackie risked her marriage and stable family life for afternoon delights every work day at noon. Because of Eddie's drug connection? Her loneliness?
A lack of self-esteem?
Based on her reunion with Eddie at the conclusion of this week's episode, the answers appear to be: yes, yes and yes.
Consider the factors that drove Jackie back into her lover's arms: security around the pill machine has tightened; she's jealous over Kevin's relationship with a former girlfriend; her work day was spent looking after an elderly woman whose caregiver had neglected her.
Nothing scares Jackie more than ending up like that woman - and not having the drugs to calm her back pain when it flares up. Enter Eddie.
At this point,...

Fidel Castro is heading to Ireland. Demian Bichir, who most recently appeared as the Cuban leader in Steven Soderberg's "Che" biopics for IFC, is starring in the Irish indie feature "The Runway." Commercials and short-film director Ian Power wrote the script and is directing the drama in County Cork.
The film is based on the true story of a South American pilot who crashed near a town in Cork in 1983. The townspeople came together to build a runway to get the pilot home and briefly inspired the nation.
Kerry Condon ("Rome") and Jaime Kierans co-star.
Macdara Kelleher of Fastnet Films is producing with Brendan McDonald. Bernard Michaux will co-produce. The Irish Film Board and the Luxembourg Film Fund are co-financing the picture.
Bichir, repped by UTA and manager Sekka Scher, is a regular on Showtime's "Weeds." He has appeared in the features "Don't Tempt Me," "In the Time of the Butterflies" and "Perdita Durango.
