pretty much the same as rich kids' problems anywhere (spoilers, sort of)
PayOrPlay27 August 2002
Warning: Spoilers
(Spoilers below, although the plot is kind of predictable.)

Four rich kids and their problems over a summer in Santiago. Their problems turn out to be pretty much the same as rich kids' problems anywhere, but with a few interesting twists--especially the girl who ends up ashamed, rather than proud, of her parents' political persecution under the old regime. I thought the treatment of the nanny who loves her charge inappropriately was more than a little unfair--although there is one line expressing some sympathy for her, she is dispatched with seemingly no concern about how she is going to eat or support her baby, and no one seeming to think that the boy (a privileged male in an ultra-machismo culture, after all) should take any responsibility for his treatment of her. So ultimately the film sets up some very interesting political, sexual, and especially class tensions but then fails to confront them--in the end, these 4 rich kids slide along on their privilege, and we are supposed to approve this display of the power of friendship. Still, it is always interesting to see places and people you don't usually see on the screen (and as another comment mentions, you really do get a sense of Santiago and its outskirts).

Not a great movie, but interesting
Sr-Fernando15 September 2001
This is a movie about four teenagers living in Chile. The two boys are American born (they speak English most of the time). The boys and their Chilean-born girlfriends attend the American school, and they all are from rich families. The movie develops in two sets, an old abandoned mansion where they spend most of their time, making homemade movies and smoking pot, and the home of one of the boys, where he has a relationship with his Chilean nanny.

Acting is not great, but the movie is mildly entertaining.

Flawed and disappointing

Warning: Spoilers
(Potential Spoilers)

This is kind of a disappointing film, especially considering it's one of the few films to come out Chile in recent years. Although it has potential, it suffers several major flaws. First, the lead who, as you might imagine is the director's son, is a terrible actor who, if you're unfortunate enough to be bilingual, will annoy you in two languages. Second, there is a ridiculous sexual abuse subplot involving Chilean sex symbol Tamara Costa woefully miscast as a predatory maid. Ms. Costa would not have to "sexually abuse" anyone, and no teenager in the world would be too traumatized if she did. Third, the film tries to treat the 1973 Chilean coup by having a scene where one of the characters reveals that she lost several members of her family in it. This scene is kind of shoe-horned in,and becomes kind of trite when mixed with the general bathos of the film (not to mention that the character in question would have been born at least ten years after the coup and would scarcely remember the subsequent Pinochet dictatorship let alone the events of 1973). Chile has the relative wealth someday join Spain, Argentina, and Mexico as the major exporters of Hispanic cinema, but not with disappointing efforts like this

A curiosity, not wholly intelligible
B242 June 2003
The plot, such as it is, has received adequate attention from other commentators. I suppose the current generation of teenagers will appreciate it far more than anyone else, but that is not a put-down of its other attributes.

There are attempts in this scant exercise to delve into some real human issues, from what the young think of Chile's recent horrific political experiences to whether the pedophile nanny has any redeeming qualities at all. But they are undermined by an overall superficiality of execution. Any viewer over the age of 21 may well be bored to tears by the film's droning emphasis on the plight of otherwise well-adjusted. well-educated, and Mercedes-driving teenagers and their shallow angst.

Not a complete waste, and it's good to see something original come out of this odd little country about a hundred miles wide and over three thousand miles long.

You can lean on me...

Youth. Troubles. Understanding. Betrayal. Forgiveness. Trust. Friendship.

These words summarize "Te Amo (made in Chile)". This honest story of Chilean youth would appeal to teenagers, young adults and parents as well. For the younger population, this movie expresses perhaps what and how you feel, while for parents, it may give you an insight into your child, his/her love for you and the pressure he/she feels to succeed and please. The major theme raised here is universal. This is a beautifuly simple movie. Enjoy.

A Good romantic Chilean Movie
alfardo2 May 2001
Te Amo (Made in Chile) is an interesting portrait of a part of chilean people who have lived in another country. It is so difficult to enter in the Chilean way of life when you are just a teenager. This movie talks about that and how four friends try to help each other. Everyone of them has secrets and everyone have some pain in their heart. Two girls and Two boys try to feel like adult and understand his particular life and country. Beautiful movie, correctly directed by Sergio Castilla and very good performances, Tamara Acosta act one of the most sicotic parts of the Chilean Movies. You really have to see it if you want to understand that to be young in Chile is as difficult as to be young in anywhere. beautiful Movie.

WHAT!!!??!?!?!?!

This is the fourth time I tried to stay awake to watch this movie with no avail. This movie is slow and stupid. Who gives a flying fig. These four rich brats with their self induced problems, need to do a little growing up and stop blaming everyone else for their problems. Rich, poor or in the middle, teenagers these days have much worse problems to worry about then these four had.

Chilean brat-pack kids with problems. Good, but predictable.
couch_potato_with_cheese17 January 2002
Some of the scenes in this movie were so well filmed that I could almost smell the sweet dry air of the hills around Santiago. This movie is about 4 spoiled kids in Santiago and their problems. Doesn't sound interesting, but it is a little deeper than that.

I liked the mix of English and Spanish in the movie, and the whole thing was very well produced. Great soundtrack - mix of Chilean hardcore and latino Rap. I wish I knew who was on the soundtrack - cause then I'd buy it!

In two words: Sweet + Funny.

Powerful

All I can say is that you must see this movie, if you can truly say that you know what it is to love another. The message is simple, but is overlooked by society as a whole. All I can hope is that this film inspires others, it has rekindled my hope for the future.

Great Movie!
PuNkYn869 October 2002
I thought the movie was great. Yes, it was about four rich kids, but it showed how much life can be twisted about and that help from friends can resolve it. I found the movie really good because the plot was twisted and you didnt know what was gonna happen till it actually happened. I think that the movie is a great movie and that it should be play alot more often, its one of my favorite movies. You never really actually get the movie until the end, and the kid had no reason to try and help that lady in the end because she kind of forced him to have sex with her, he didnt want to do it and she forced him and that was the consequence of her actions and she should have been put out the house along time ago. That also proves that the kids mom never really payed any attention to him because if that was my mom she would know if i was being harrassed or not. So you have to reach deep down inside of the movie to get what the writer really wanted you to get out of it, no just look at the surface.
