A curiosity, not wholly intelligible
2 June 2003
The plot, such as it is, has received adequate attention from other commentators. I suppose the current generation of teenagers will appreciate it far more than anyone else, but that is not a put-down of its other attributes.

There are attempts in this scant exercise to delve into some real human issues, from what the young think of Chile's recent horrific political experiences to whether the pedophile nanny has any redeeming qualities at all. But they are undermined by an overall superficiality of execution. Any viewer over the age of 21 may well be bored to tears by the film's droning emphasis on the plight of otherwise well-adjusted. well-educated, and Mercedes-driving teenagers and their shallow angst.

Not a complete waste, and it's good to see something original come out of this odd little country about a hundred miles wide and over three thousand miles long.
