Knives Out has become iconic in many different ways. Not only did its cast break the internet, but its approach to the whodunit genre was so unique and intriguing that fans could not help but fawn over its genius. As if Daniel Craig playing the role of Benoit Blanc wasn’t enough, the cast also includes Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Michael Shannon.
Knives Out
The mystery genre has been around for a very long time, which has made it quite difficult to do something new. Everything has already been done and every twist has been turned far too many times. When something becomes this familiar to audiences, many filmmakers and creators draw inspiration from preexisting works to get what they think are the best parts and make something new.

These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to either Jon Hamm (“Fargo”) or Tom Hollander (“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans”). The other potential nominees at this early stage are David Oyelowo (“Lawmen: Bass Reeves”), Hiroyuki Sanada (“Shogun”), Matt Bomer (“Fellow Travelers”) and Andrew Scott (“Ripley”) — but that could all change in the coming months.
As of this writing, two our of six Emmy Experts predict a victory for Hamm: Peter Travers (ABC) and Ray Richmond (Gold Derby). He’s the consummate actor, writer, renaissance man. What on earth wouldn’t you like to learn Stephen Fry’s take on?
There’s so much you could ask Stephen Fry. Maybe something about his TV career, from A Bit of Fry and Laurie to Jeeves and Wooster to Blackadder to Qi. Perhaps his books – the novels, the memoirs, the classics, how to write poetry.
Maybe something about his illustrious film career, with Wilde the obvious highlight, but which also includes Chariots of Fire, Gosford Park, The Hobbit, Love and Friendship, and Spice World.

Robert Altman was the iconoclastic filmmaker and one of the few directors to have an adjective made out of his name. Altman’s work was not limited to films — he began his career by directing episodic television shows (winning an Emmy for directing HBO’s “Tanner ’88”), as well as mounting numerous operas and other stage productions.
But Altman’s love was truly making films. To accomplish his signature overlapping dialogue, he designed innovative sound systems on which filmmakers still rely today. His sets were always a party (some would say a bacchanal), and actors clamored to work with him. Studios, however, would regularly butt heads with Altman, who would promise them a potentially commercial genre picture, then set out to subvert the familiar genre completely. The studios would largely hate it, but his fans would eat it up. Having finally achieved success in film in his 40s, he became a middle-aged wonder boy,...

The casts vying for the 2024 Best Film Ensemble SAG Award hail from “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “The Color Purple,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer.” Our current racetrack odds indicate that the “Oppenheimer” team (82/25) will triumph, followed in order of likelihood by the actors from “Barbie” (37/10), “American Fiction” (9/2), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), and “The Color Purple” (9/2).
For the first time since 2021, all five films nominated for this ensemble prize are also in the running for at least one individual acting award. None produced four solo nominees like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” both did last year, but “Oppenheimer” got close with three: star Cillian Murphy and featured players Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt. Those with two (one lead and one supporting) each are “American Fiction” (Jeffrey Wright; Sterling K. Brown), “Barbie” (Margot Robbie; Ryan Gosling), and “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Lily Gladstone...

In the series, the year is 1963, and legendary detective Spade (Owen) is enjoying retirement in the South of France. Spade’s life in Bozouls is peaceful and quiet, but the rumoured return of his old adversary will change everything. Anyone who didn’t perfectly predict this year’s Oscar nominees for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design has a uniquely valid excuse. This applies to all but a tiny fraction of Gold Derby’s nearly 11,000 prognosticators, whose solid consensus ultimately conflicted with the academy’s highly unusual decision to populate both categories with the same five films: “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Since these two craft races have only been completely congruent twice before, it’s especially understandable that very few people anticipated this outcome.
The film that mainly tripped folks up in this case was “Napoleon,” which garnered support from only 49.9% of our users in the costume design race and scraped by with a production design backing rate of just 7.5%. In the former category, many had trouble settling on two of four on-the-bubble candidates, while the latter’s pesky fifth slot...

British actor Laurence Fox has lost a libel case with two men he called pedophiles on social media after they had called the My Son Hunter star a racist.
On Monday, the High Court in the U.K. deemed that Fox had defamed Simon Blake, a former LGBT charity trustee, and Crystal, a drag artist and former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant, on Twitter/X in October 2020, when he called them pedophiles over an escalating row over Black History Month.
The Guardian reports that the spat on X started, when Fox said he would boycott U.K. grocery store Sainsbury’s for supporting “racial segregation and discrimination” after the company said it would establish safe spaces for Black employees during Black History Month in October 2020. Blake and Crystal, whose real name is Colin Seymour, responded to Fox’s call for a boycott by calling him racist. Fox, in turn, replied...

“I didn’t expect to get so old,” sighs 93-year-old Thelma Post (June Squibb) in Josh Margolin’s hilarious and unexpectedly poignant mash-up of Point Blank and The Straight Story. Squibb, so good in Nebraska, once again represents for the hip-op generation, bringing wisdom and truth — plus the best waspish comic timing since Maggie Smith in Robert Altman’s Gosford Park — to a comic action-thriller that has fun with the pitfalls of old age but does so with dignity and respect. Appeal should be across the board; indeed, the film would make a great May-December double bill with the 2022 Aubrey Plaza vehicle Emily the Criminal, a similar study of an ordinary woman sucked into a shady underworld.
Margolin lays out all the film’s key elements with refreshing speed, opening with 24-year-old Daniel (Fred Hechinger) patiently helping the recently widowed...

Christopher Nolan has made a career for himself for his unconventional narrative structures of storytelling. His 11 films have ranged from psychological thrillers to science fiction epics to “The Dark Knight” trilogy, and have garnered a total of 36 Academy Award nominations, five of which for Nolan individually. With his latest directed epic “Oppenheimer” breaking box office records and gathering massive awards buzz since its release on July 21 by Universal Pictures, let’s break down Nolan’s five Oscar nominations for three of his movies.
Nolan’s first recognition at the Oscars came for his second feature “Memento,” based on his brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story “Memento Mori,” both released in 2001. The psychological mystery thriller written and directed by Nolan stars Guy Pearce as a man with anterograde amnesia and short-term memory loss as he tries to solve the murder of his wife. There was a time not too long ago when whodunnits seemed to be a dusty relic of cinema’s past. Mysteries about a cast of colorful characters at the center of a murder case, and the intrepid detective investigating them, were far and few between in movie theaters for what felt like decades, and the rare films to feature those plots seldom attracted much attention. But nowadays, the genre is back, baby.
In 2017, Kenneth Branagh directed and starred as the iconic detective Hercule Poirot in “Murder on the Orient Express,” based on one of mystery writer Agatha Christie’s most famous novels. It was the first high-profile Christie adaptation to hit theaters in ages, after 1988’s “Appointment with Death.” The movie was highly successful, and Branagh has returned to that Poirot mustache with “Death on the Nile” and “A Haunting in Venice,” the latter of which opened in theaters this month.

It’s not uncommon for a prominent British actor to be labeled British acting royalty. All types, from Laurence Olivier to Maggie Smith, have worn the label but nobody perhaps has literally worn that title recently to the extent as Helen Mirren. She has had a long varied career and has earned her place as one of the holders of acting’s triple crowns by playing a variety of British monarchs.
Her Oscar came for playing the British Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen,” which dealt with her reaction to the unexpected death of Princess Diana. She would revisit the role nine years later for a Tony on Broadway in the play “The Audience,” which dealt with Elizabeth’s relationships with the various prime ministers who have served under her. It was a different Queen, Elizabeth I, that would bring Mirren one of her four Emmys, when she starred in...

Michael Gambon, the Irish-English actor best known for his role as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in six of the “Harry Potter” movies, has died, Variety has confirmed. He was 82.
“We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon,” his family said in a statement. “Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia.”
While it is easier for a character actor, often working in supporting roles, to rack up a large number of credits than it is for lead actors, Gambon was enormously prolific, with over 150 TV or film credits in an era when half that number would be impressive and unusual — and this for a man whose body of stage work was also prodigious.

Artificial Intelligence is a big sticking point in the current Hollywood strikes. Author and actor Stephen Fry understands why, as he’s been victimized by an AI version of his voice being used in a documentary without his participation.
Speaking at the CogX Festival in London on Thursday, Fry played a clip of an AI system mimicking his voice to narrate a historical documentary.
“I said not one word of that—it was a machine. Yes, it shocked me,” he said. “They used my reading of the seven volumes of the Harry Potter books, and from that dataset an AI of my voice was created and it made that new narration.”
Fry was the narrator on the Harry Potter books in the UK.
“What you heard was not the result of a mash up, this is from a flexible artificial voice, where the words are modulated to fit the meaning of each sentence,...

The murder-mystery renaissance really is in full effect right now. The likes of Only Murders In The Building, Poker Face, and Apple TV’s The Afterparty have been making armchair detectives of us all on the telly side of things, but it’s the big screen sleuthing boom that’s had genre fans flocking to the multiplexes with their magnifying glasses and (presumably) deerstalkers most recently. With whodunnits as wildly varied as Park Chan-wook’s sensual Decision To Leave, the superbly silly See How They Run, Rian Johnson_ – which leans hard into the ‘D’ of DC Comics – on offer, it’s not exactly hard to see why, either.
Now, as we prepare to take enough champagne to fill the, erm, canals of Venice with us to see Kenneth Branagh_, we at Empire HQ have put our tan raincoats on and launched an investigation into the very best the genre has to offer.

The new biographical drama “Golda” features Helen Mirren in a transformative role as Golda Meir, the so-called “Iron Lady of Israel” who faced high-stakes responsibilities and decisions during the Yom Kippur War. Written by Nicholas Martin and directed by Guy Nattiv, the Bleecker Street contender is Mirren’s first big play at a potential Academy Award nomination in many years, so let’s look back at her four Oscar races.
With a career in film going back to the 1960s, Mirren saw her first Oscar nomination in 1994 in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in “The Madness of King George.” Directed by Nicholas Hytner, this biographical comedy-drama tells the story of King George III and how his Lieutenants tried to adjust the rules to run the country after he went mad. Mirren played his wife, Queen Charlotte, and she was one of four citations for the movie at the 67th Academy Awards,...

By now, the final line of the first MCU movie is iconic: “I am Iron Man.” And not only do we all know that the line was delivered by Robert Downey Jr., many of us also know that it was improvised, one of the many instances of the cast taking an improv approach to the film. But it almost never happened, as MCU chief Kevin Feige originally had someone else in mind to don the stylish facial hair of reformed weaponeer Tony Stark.
During the commencement address to graduates of the University of Southern California (via The Direct), Feige sought to teach the assembly a lesson about dealing with unmet expectations. When casting Iron Man, Feige and the other producers at the newly-formed Marvel Studios searched for an actor with “the perfect mix of heart and strength and charisma.” This actor would be the center of the movie that would launch a franchise,...

The following article contains spoilers for "1923."
The juggernaut "Yellowstone" started creator Taylor Sheridan's Dutton family universe. The series, set in the present day, has spawned the prequels "1883" and "1923," giving fans the tragic backstory of the ranching family in Montana. Like "1883" did with Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, who played Margaret and James Dutton, "1923" nabbed some big-name actors in Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, who play Jacob and Cara Dutton.
The saga of the Dutton family is a dark one, with James and Margaret's daughter Elsa (Isabel May) dying from an arrow wound in "1883." James dies after an attack, and Margaret freezes to death in the snow. Jacob and Cara come to take over the ranch and raise the surviving sons John (James Badge Dale) and Spencer (Brandon Sklenar). “Freud’s Last Session,” which stars Anthony Hopkins as Sigmund Freud and Matthew Goode as author C. S. Lewis, is in its final stages of filming in Ireland.
“Freud’s Last Session” is set on the eve of the Second World War, when at the end of his life, Freud (Hopkins) invites “The Chronicles of Narnia” author C.S. Lewis (Goode) to debate the existence of God. Interweaving past, present and fantasy, the film explores Freud’s unique relationship with his daughter Anna (Liv Lisa Fries), and Lewis’ unconventional relationship with his best friend’s mother.
Sony Pictures Classics last year snapped up all rights for North America, the Middle East, Turkey, India, Eastern Europe (excluding Cis), Asia and Latin America and worldwide airlines. How did we get here?” Emily Watson asks, frustratedly. “Where the victims of a horrific crime aren’t believed and the perpetrators are protected?” In her new film God’s Creatures, the Oscar-nominated star of Breaking the Waves and Punch-Drunk Love plays Aileen, a seafood processor in rural Ireland whose son Brian (Normal People’s Paul Mescal) is accused by a local girl of rape. The residents of the small fishing town they live in rally around him. The accuser, on the other hand, is exiled. “This is baked into our institutions and how our society is structured,” Watson continues, forcefully now. “Somehow sexual assault doesn’t matter. Somebody breaks into your house? The police will sort you out in five minutes. If someone rapes your daughter… good luck!”
Watson has been an internationally acclaimed star and one of Britain’s very best actors for more than 25 years, but there’s still something mysterious about her.

Once the British film academy showered “All Quiet on the Western Front” with seven BAFTA Awards, it became difficult to imagine that there would be much overlap between its 2022 honorees and the subsequent Oscar winners. Although they lauded its film editing, the Brits otherwise overlooked industry juggernaut “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which, as expected, proved to be an Academy Awards magnet. In the end, the two organizations only agreed on a handful of below-the-line wins, while their top eight category results were completely different for the first time since the BAFTAs became an Oscar precursor more than two decades ago.
At last month’s BAFTA Awards, which took place exactly three weeks before the Oscars, the above-the-line categories were dominated by “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” with three wins each. The former took the top prize of Best Picture and was honored for its directing and adapted screenplay,...

The films in contention for the 2023 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Babylon,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.” Our current odds show “Elvis” (10/3) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (37/10), “Babylon” (9/2), “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (9/2), and “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” (9/2).
Jenny Beavan’s nomination for “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” is her 12th and could result in her fourth win, as she previously bagged trophies for “A Room with a View” (1987), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), and “Cruella” (2022). She would be only the fifth costumer to achieve as many victories, after Edith Head, Irene Sharaff, Milena Canonero, and Colleen Atwood. With the Screen Actors Guild Awards just around the corner, one has to wonder: Does more talent on screen automatically translate to more awards?
In the 27-year history of the ensemble film award (it was first awarded at the second ceremony), the movie with the largest cast has triumphed 11 times. The winning films are, in order, “Shakespeare in Love” (1998) with 12 eligible cast members, “Traffic” (2000) with 19, “Gosford Park” (2001) with 20, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003) with 19, “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008) with 11, “Inglourious Basterds” (2009) with 16, “The King’s Speech” (2010) with nine, “The Help” (2011) with 12, “Argo” (2012) with 13, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017) with 11 and “Black Panther” (2018) with 12.
This translates to the films with the largest ensembles winning approximately 40 percent of the time, so one could say that the odds are not in their favor, but it’s not unheard of for them to win either. This then raises the question: What are...

The awards choices of industry voters and cinephiles from across the pond will be revealed at the 76th BAFTA Awards, which will take place this Sunday, Feb. 19 at London’s Southbank Centre. A major bellwether to the Oscars, the BAFTAs have proven to be a strong indicator of what the Academy could choose as their favorite films and performances of the year.
Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” leads the tally with 14 nominations, tying “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000) for most nods for a non-English language film, and second overall with “Gandhi” (1982) and “Atonement” (2007), which nabbed 16 noms each. Searchlight’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” are also well-represented at the British ceremony, each landing 10 noms.
So what can we expect?

Searchlight’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” are also well-represented at the British ceremony, each landing 10 noms.
So what can we expect?

What do “The Broadway Melody” (1929), “Grand Hotel” (1932) and “Mutiny on the Bounty” (1935) all have in common? In Oscar history, they are the only films to have won the Academy’s most coveted award — and nothing else. Could Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” join that select group this year, despite being the second-most-nominated movie of the lot?
Of the dark comedy’s nine noms, only three have a viable path to glory: Colin Farrell for actor, McDonagh for original screenplay and best picture. The other mentions — director, supporting actress and the double-dipping (and vote-splitting) supporting actors among them — face hurdles too high to clear.
Farrell is walking steadily with a Golden Globe for lead actor (comedy), but the film was shut out at the Critics Choice Awards. With Austin Butler (“Elvis”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) equally building on their movies’ buzz, all eyes are on BAFTA and SAG...

Nearly 30 years after she was part of the inaugural class of Screen Actors Guild Awards nominees with her supporting bid for 1994’s “True Lies,” Jamie Lee Curtis, who lost back then to Dianne Wiest (“Bullets Over Broadway”), finally has not one but two more shots at being honored by the acting guild. Her individual and ensemble notices for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” come nearly five decades into her prolific career and could lead to a record-breaking dual achievement. If the 64-year-old succeeds on both bids, she will be the oldest performer to win two SAG Awards for a single film.
Of the four women challenging Curtis in the supporting category, only Hong Chau (“The Whale”) has vied for the same prize before. She was part of the 2017 lineup for “Downsizing” but lost that race to Allison Janney. Also in the running are general first-timer Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin...

Throughout her acting career, which began two dozen years ago when she was 16, Kerry Condon has appeared in several Screen Actors Guild Award-nominated films and TV series, including “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017) and “Better Call Saul.” However, she went unrecognized by the acting guild until this year, when she became both a supporting and ensemble nominee for “The Banshees of Inisherin.” If she succeeds on her solo bid, she will be the third woman in a row and fifth in the last decade to conquer the category on her first general SAG Awards outing.
Condon stands as the only total SAG Awards newcomer in this year’s film supporting actress lineup. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star Stephanie Hsu is a past TV ensemble winner for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and her co-star Jamie Lee Curtis and has been recognized in this category once before (for 1994’s “True Lies...

Nearly two decades have passed since the arrest of New Jersey nurse Charles Cullen made national headlines, and now the story of how the serial killer was brought to justice by his coworker, Amy Loughren, has been adapted for the screen under the title “The Good Nurse.” Eddie Redmayne’s performance as Cullen has earned him his sixth Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, which could lead to a history-making victory. Since he already won the lead actor category for 2014’s “The Theory of Everything” and the ensemble award for 2020’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” he only needs to clinch this supporting trophy in order to become the first male recipient of all possible SAG Awards for film acting.

If size really doesn’t matter, then one film has the edge to win ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards: “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Because of the group’s stringent rules stipulating only actors with their own title cards are eligible for the prize, the dark comedy boasts just four nominated cast members: Kerry Condon, Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan. And if “Banshees” prevails, it’ll tie the record for smallest cast to win the award.
“Sideways” (2004) has the record all to itself right now. Thomas Haden Church, Paul Giamatti, Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh were part of its winning ensemble, and the quartet triumphed in a year of small casts in a field of six. “Hotel Rwanda” also had four nominated cast members, while “Million Dollar Baby” had just three. The boxing drama and “Beasts of No Nation” (2015) hold the record for smallest nominated cast. Only one of the six nominees,...
