Rather pointless
planktonrules17 August 2008
This is one of many films in a sub-par collection of animated shorts entitled "Avoid Eye Contact: Volume One". Like most of the shorts, this one did absolutely nothing for me and that's a real shame, as I usually love these sorts of compilations--having seen all three of The Animation Show DVDs, several Spike and Mike ones, collections of Canadian Film Board cartoons and many, many others. I really wanted to like this.

However, despite my desire to embrace this cartoon, the animation quality was very poor and showed no polish. The animations looked to be inspired by Picasso, but offered nothing particularly challenging or interesting because the artwork wasn't inspired. As for the story, I honestly didn't even notice that there was one, as the whole thing seemed rather pointless.

Hopefully Fran Krause will learn the craft as a result of this film and it seems this is the case. I really don't want to trash beginning film makers' work, but this was practically unwatchable. While it's not listed on IMDb, the other Krause animation included was much better (BOX FACTORY) and while it was very short (and perhaps that's why it's not listed), it showed a deftness AND Krause used a very different medium (it looked like CGI but was hard to tell for sure) and it seemed to show much promise. It's a shame--I would have given this little film a much higher score had it been listed on IMDb.
