An introspect of student filmmaking at its finest!
SLavis30 June 2000
This film represents months of hard work and determination on many parts, and the end product is amazing. It's keen and witty, featuring fantastic writing combined with "Spinal Tap"-esque directing and some great ad-lib performances. "Lights, Camera, War!" has a very laid-back, non-rehearsed feel -- just as it should. I expect to see big things out of directors Ziemba and Vennema in the future. And not to go unnoticed, Scott Rocher's genius cinematography work shines in many scenes. Bravo! A masterpiece!

Brilliant amateur film, entertaining and thought provoking!

Simply superb. I energetically dispute the spattering of criticism regarding Vennema's dazzling performance. Without Vennema, this film would have nevertheless been delightful--but he added that je ne sais quoi. Lights, Camera, War! (2000) was intellectual masturbation at its best. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Better In Show

Finally, Mock-u-mentry that brings to it a truth and a comedic nature, without the crafty unnatural writing and crisp filming if your standard film such as the recent Best in Show, or Waiting for Guffman. This genre has waited long for a visionary film to demonstrate at its best, a quality movie concerned with its content and its unique perspectives and not with how much money they can spend or what actors they can cast. Lights, Camera War! is a new and valuable representative of good independent film-making. It asks that we all readjust our focus on the gigantic productions hollywood churns out expecting its audiences to shell out $8.00 a ticket, and instead offers an excellent portrayal of student production that is hilarious and brilliant and does not require groveling and paying homage to the media elite. If you want a movie that shows how everyman can conquer all, while supporting the Willie Loman-esque distopia of the American dream, then you need this movie.

Vennema's a punk

let me begin by saying that "lights, camera, war!" is a fantastic freshmen effort from a bunch of very talented sophomores. this film boasts a host of talented technicians, actors and writers that seem to possess a great deal of collective potential--weighed down only by the soporific and lackluster efforts of co-director john leslie vennema, whose ineffectual co-direction proves to be the only flaw in this otherwise sparkling student production.

mr. vennema, for shame.
