While a movie starring James Franco just opened last week, given his tremendous pace, it’s not surprising there’s another around the corner. Only this time, it’s one of his directorial efforts, and “In Dubious Battle” sees the actor/filmmaker turning John Steinbeck‘s classic book into another middling effort.

Calling on some big name pals like Nat Wolff, Selena Gomez, Vincent D’Onofrio, Robert Duvall, Ed Harris, Bryan Cranston, Sam Shepard, Zach Braff, and Josh Hutcherson, the movie follows farm workers who rise up against the increasingly intolerable conditions and wages in which they are forced to toil.

Justin Kelly’s “I Am Michael” attempts to understand change: why people change, how it happens, if it is really possible. As to the last question, the film doesn’t quite lay down a definitive yes or no answer — just that people make the choices that they do, and have to continue down whatever path that presents. James Franco stars as Michael Glatze, a former gay activist and magazine editor, who in 2007, announced that he was giving up the gay lifestyle and turning to Christ.

Here at Moviefone, we think America's greatness should be celebrated all year long -- or, at the very least, for an extra week. That's why we're declaring March 31 - April 4 "America F@$& Yeah" week, with five days of patriotic interviews and features that honor America and the movies.
I'm nervous. Why? Because I'm about to enter a room and interview Samuel L. Jackson, one of those great actors who kind of defines the term "badass" in Hollywood. You need attitude, a sharp tongue, and a withering way with words? Call Samuel L. Jackson.
Marvel called him seven years ago to play Nick Fury, director of covert government agency S.H.I.E.L.D., in a cameo at the end of the first "Iron Man," and has kept him on speed dial ever since. Now, having played Fury six times -- and being bumped up to a lead in "The Avengers" and this week's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier...

An interesting story doing the rounds this morning is that Hayley Atwell has signed a deal to star in a new Marvel TV series, based around her Captain America character, Agent Peggy Carter. Having already developed the character further in the well-received Agent Carter One-Shot, Atwell has often hinted at being open to a return, and it would seem that the small screen is the medium through which that could happen. No official confirmation has emerged from Marvel, although The Daily Mirror (yes, we know) is reporting the story as a...

Tell us about the best films involving running, knocking a ball around, racing a bobsled, perfecting a crane kick, and all that other sporting business
With large tranches of the population currently gripped by Olympic-fever, what better time to celebrate the best sports films?
When one goes to see a film about sporting achievements, it's not hard to guess how the plot's going to pan out. There will usually be a plucky underdog, and various adversities for them to overcome before triumphing against the odds in the final reel.
That's not to say any old idiot could knock together a sports movie – some are good, a few are truly excellent, and very, very many of them are terrible. But which, for you, are the best, and why? Let us know in the thread below.
We're also keen to hear about new films you've been watching. Here's what some @guardianfilm followers...

Fans of the horror genre and its subgenres seem to be pretty familiar with independent cinema. From companies like Troma to homegrown efforts like Wicked Pixel Cinema, they will tell you that getting a film made is tough but finding distribution can be even worse.
An interesting story came over in my news feed about an ex-Groupon executive starting a Groupon-esque online distribution site called, Prescreen. Prescreen basically puts a movie up for a day and offers you to buy the film for a 60 day rental for a low price. Today’s film just happens to be Boggy Creek, the film based on the 1972 film The Legend of Boggy Creek. Boggy Creek saw a DVD & Blu-Ray Release last month, but as it stands, I don’t believe it is available via Netflix or Amazon to stream. $4 isn’t a bad price to make less mainstream films available. This is in...

He broke all the rules of stardom and yet was a star, a romantic hero and an all-rounder par excellence. 47 was no age for one of Hindi cinema's brightest talents to go, but on November 6, 1985, Sanjeev Kumar passed away, leaving fans, friends and the Hindi film shell-shocked. Gulzar remembers Sanjeev Kumar "For me, he was the complete actor. I have always said that I had two anchors - one was Sanjeev Kumar, and the other was R.D.Burman. What most people do not know is that I knew Haribhai (as I called him) from the late 1950s. We were both with the Indian National Theatre where I would write for the plays and he was a stage actor. Sanjeev was a student of P.D.Shenoy, who was also teaching at the Filmalaya School of Acting and later turned film director. Sanjeev was just over 20 years old, and he was playing a father!

Is The Avengers movie a little behind schedule already? And has Robert Downey Jr just confirmed that Joss Whedon’s script is firmly in place?
An interesting story has popped up over at Bleeding Cool, which is suggesting that Marvel Studios is looking, not for the first time, to tighten the budgets on the upcoming Avengers movie as much as it possibly can.
Marvel is rarely a studio to splash cash around, and, if you remember, it's this approach that reportedly almost cost it the involvement of Samuel L Jackson in its projects at one point. In the case of its ensemble feast, The Avengers, Bleeding Cool is saying that Marvel is looking to get the budget close to Sony's original outlay on the first Spider-Man movie. That'd put the cost of The Avengers somewhere around the $140/150m mark, firmly in the mid-range for a modern, big budget blockbuster.
As such,...

Blood Creek is one of a few films that was passed over for a theatrical release by Lionsgate in favour of a straight to DVD showing instead. Watching Blood Creek will make one ponder why the film was not supported with more confidence by this distribution company as Nazi occultism is given style. In the film, the controversial practice of black magic practiced by the German Fascists is given a believable story. The use of the occult heightens the thrilling atmosphere of the film.
The Nazi practice of occultism is still controversial, yet, not a hard stretch based on past Nazi exploits, e.g., the Holocaust. The film does not delve into the debate and instead delivers a story of Nazi scientists practicing witchcraft in the farmlands of America. Here ancient Nordic runestones have been laid for the development of a perfect Nordic race. One Nazi wears bone armour, drinks blood,...

With Ghostbusters 3 set to go into production later this year, reports are circling over whether Ivan Reitman will be directing or not...
An interesting story has arisen at tbe Vulture blog which suggests that things might not all be well on the good ship Ghostbusters 3.
The current status of the project is that a fresh draft of the screenplay is expected in the next couple of months, with the idea being to press ahead with production later this year, in time for a summer 2011 release we're guessing (although don't rule out winter). Some of the original cast are returning, but the plan is to bring in a new collection of Ghostbusters, who will be trained by the old crowd.
However, there's now some confusion over the choice of director for the project. It had been revealed that the director of the original, Ivan Reitman, was set to helm the film,...

Chicago – The most critically acclaimed film of the year, Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” is finally available on DVD and Blu-ray. The war movie made a measly $13 million in theaters, a number that has been thrown around several times as to why the film won’t win the Oscar for Best Picture. Millions of viewers will catch up to this modern masterpiece on DVD and Blu-ray and regret not having experienced it in theaters.
DVD Rating: 4.5/5.0
You don’t just have to take my word for it. The film has not only appeared on dozens of top tens for 2009 but also on a few lists for the best works of the decade. Roger Ebert named it the 2nd best film of the last ten years. The Chicago Film Critics Association awarded the movie an amazing five awards for Best Picture, Best Actor (Jeremy Renner), Best Director (Kathryn Bigelow), Best...

Today, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse starlet Ashley Greene came on The Ellen Degeneres Show to talk about how she's been handling all of her Twilight-related success. An interesting story that Greene shared was about how she was proposed to by a woman (on behalf of her own husband). Ashley Greene also revealed her history in becoming an actress. Degeneres herself tweeted about the appearance, saying "You’ll never believe how long she was a struggling actress." If the episode ha ...

Some studios are banking that the answer to that question is "yes!" An interesting story appeared over at the LATimes.com last week about an upcoming effort by studios to improve lagging DVD/Blu-ray sales. In brief, they hope to put restrictions on the amount of time between a title's release and its availability for rent. From the LATimes piece: Under the plan, new DVD releases would be available on a purchase-only basis for a few weeks, after which time companies such as Blockbuster Inc. and Netflix Inc. would be allowed to rent the DVDs to their customers. The move comes as the studios are grappling with sharply declining DVD revenue, which has long propped up the movie business." Basically a new DVD/Blu-ray would be released only for sale both online and on the shelves at Target, Wal-Mart, etc. If you want to see it, you have to buy it... or...

There's nothing worse than watching a filmmaker go head-to-head with the suits of a feature film. Creativity nearly always loses, and somehow the studios always find a way to convince the press that it's the director's fault. Who knows what's true? An interesting story hit the web today about the Chinese horror film Dream Home, which was supposed to hit theaters (out there) in October - but a lawsuit could burn this nearly completed slasher film to the ground. The director cites "creative differences", while the producers are going for the throat claiming the director wanted to remove the gore. Sounds to me like they are just trying to get us against him. Read on for the story and then tell us what you think.

There's only one place in the world where representatives from the Us, Austria, Britain, Korea, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, to name a few, are gathering to meet face-to-face to settle their differences in a civilized manner. That place is (of all places) Flushing Meadows, Queens, New York. Those representatives are the elites of international tennis. The event is the Us Open. Some of the biggest news about the Open so far is that officials have put the clampdown on players' use of Twitter in the locker rooms. An interesting story -- maybe a little less compelling than this summer's stories about Iran's liquidation of even the 'pseudo' in its pseudo-democracy (the mullahs are said to prefer the term 'costume-democracy') but, still, it's the end of the season and with even the president coming off a vacay it's probably time for a little...
