Buster Keaton was one of the biggest names in early cinema, famous for his physical comedy. He thrived on an ability to improvise these gags; Keaton grew up as a vaudeville performer, and spent his childhood improvising slapstick routines with his father onstage. As a Hollywood filmmaker, Keaton continued to rely on improvisation for his comedy — but this required him to follow one simple rule.
Keaton got his start as an entertainer traveling in a company alongside Harry Houdini. It was here that he learned to improvise fluidly and hilariously. His first time in front of a camera was in Fatty Arbuckle's "The Butcher Boy." "[Arbuckle] only had to turn me loose in the set and I'd have material in two minutes, because I'd been doing it all my life," Keaton explained (via A Hard Act to Follow).

This article contains full spoilers for the series finale of The Deuce, which we reviewed here.
Though their subjects and locales are different, every David Simon show has certain common themes about individuals being crushed by the weight of American institutions. And every David Simon show ends more or less the same way: with a musical montage summing up that show’s themes while giving us a sense of what all the characters will be doing in the immediate future.
Or, rather, every David Simon show has ended that way until now.

2018 Tribeca Film Festival – Look Who’s Talking Now!
Last year’s Tribeca Film Festival Tribeca Talks series saw the unlikely on stage pairing of Robert Rodriguez and Barbra Streisand to discuss the latter’s career. Rodriguez revealed that in his household growing up Streisand was already revered as a singer and actress, but when she became a filmmaker it inspired a young Robert to take up a camera himself.
The 2018 line-up doesn’t have any pairings quite as surprising, but there are still some exciting names to see alongside each other such as Alec Baldwin and Spike Lee who’ll discuss their movie passions, while Tribeca Film Festival co-founder and all round legend Robert De Niro will interview Bradley Cooper about his career as actor, producer and director. Other names taking to the Tribeca Talks stage this year include Alexander Payne, Laura Poitras, Nancy Meyers, John Legend, Edward Burns, Jamie Foxx,...

There are certain movies in your life that just leave you “feeling good” after you see them. They’re not Oscar worthy films. They’re not these unbelievable epic movies. But they’re “real.” They’re filmed in a real way in real settings with real dialogue and with people who look like the kind you’d come across in real life. One such movie I always found was like this was Sidewalks of New York which was directed by Ed Burns. I’m not saying that movie is anything like the one I’m introducing here but there’s an authenticity that I happen to enjoy. You

Gird your loins, and get out your sparkles 'cause there's more "Twilight" coming our way - via Facebook!
If you're an aspiring female filmmaker with a taste for "Twilight," listen up. "The Storytellers - New Creative Voices of The 'Twilight' Saga" is an upcoming competition cooked up by "Twilight" distributor Lionsgate and author Stephenie Meyer that will award five female filmmakers the funds to make short films based on "Twilight" characters. Plus, the big winner will receive cold, hard cash and what's being nebulously referred to as "career opportunities." The organization Women in Film is also a partner in this venture, which is designed to boost the visibility of female filmmakers in Hollywood.
It's also a clever way to rejuvenate the "Twilight" franchise in a whole new way using social media. Whether or not this will lead to more "Twilight" flicks in the future is a mystery, but Lionsgate's Michael Burns teased,...

Woody Allen’s back catalogue casts a long shadow across contemporary romantic comedy. His tropes and trademarks are as ingrained into the collective sense memory as mother’s perfume. At the first tremble of a clarinet, mutter about mortality or meander across a Manhattan neighbourhood, we inhale the nostalgia like Bisto kids. And arguably we’d never have met Harry and Sally, walked the Sidewalks of New York or dined alongside Friends with Money without his influence.
The Longest Week is peppered with Woody base notes. Over the course of seven days, Conrad (Jason Bateman) has been stripped of the safety net of his wealth and the cushion of his ego, moved in with his cynical best friend (Billy Crudup) and accidentally fallen in love with his girl (Olivia Wilde). His eventual dilemma – to be or not to be a better man – is as timeless as Annie Hall.

Us film and TV actor who infused grittier roles with his experience of almost two decades as a Chicago policeman
The Italian-American character actor Dennis Farina, who has died aged 69 after suffering from a blood clot in his lung, evoked effortlessly the grittiness of a life beyond cinema's gloss and glamour. No wonder: acting was his second career, and he came to it after an 18-year stint in the police department of his beloved home city, Chicago.
Cinemagoers came to prize Farina's no-nonsense toughness, which could be played equally effectively for laughs or menace – and sometimes both at the same time, as in the case of his frightening and comically foul-mouthed turn as Robert De Niro's bete noire in the 1988 comedy thriller Midnight Run. When he promised to stab an inept underling through the heart with a pencil, the audience could be in no doubt that he was up to that task,...

Between his early career as a Chicago cop and his recent gig as Xfinity Internet pitchman, Dennis Farina, character actor par excellence, amassed an impressive resume of distinctive performances in movies (including "Get Shorty," "Out of Sight" and the under-appreciated "Sidewalks of New York") and TV dramas (including "Law & Order," the cult-fave "Crime Story" and last year's undeservedly short-lived "Luck"). He was a personal favorite of mine -- yep, I was a fan as far back as "Manhunter" -- and I was unabashedly delighted when, during the 1988 New York junket for ?Midnight Run,? I had the opportunity to speak with gentleman. Dennis Farina passed away today at age 69. To celebrate his life, I offer this reprise of my original '88 interview. When Dennis Farina smiles, he's the next-door neighbor you'll invite over for barbecue, or the guy on the next barstool who doesn't remain a stranger very long. But when Farina frowns,...

Actor Dennis Farina compiled over 70 film and television credits in his lengthy career, playing a variety of tough guy roles in films like "Midnight Run," "Get Shorty" and "Saving Private Ryan." Farina died on Monday at the age of 69.
"I realize that no one is going to come to me and ask me to be Julius Caesar or a romantic lead, but I think I'm a certain type of guy who looks a certain way and that's just the reality of things," Farina told Moviefone in 2011.
Born in Chicago, Farina didn't start acting at a young age. He was actually a Chicago police officer for 18 years, and was hired by Michael Mann to consult on the 1981 film "Thief." I had planned to start off this review wondering just where the hell this Edward Burns has been all these years. The Fitzgerald Family Christmas is so achingly lovely a film, so full of bittersweet melancholy and yet so fixedly hopeful without ever having to touch on the sentimental, that it reminded me so hard why I fell in love with Burns’ work with his Brothers McMullen all those years ago. I felt like he’d abandoned us since 2001’s Sidewalks of New York (another perfect film). But then I looked at Burn’s IMDb page and discovered that he’s made a bunch of movies between then and now and I’d never even heard of them. How can that be? How can I be a clued-in critic, a film professional, for Christ’s sake, and not have been aware of his work? How is it that his unpretentious...

Written and directed by, and starring the great Ed Burns, The Fitzgerald Family Christmas looks to be a solid drama worth heading out into the cold for this holiday season.
Arriving on VoD later this month, and released in Us theatres early next, the film sees Burns reuniting him with Connie Britton, who’s starred in a handful of Burns’ earlier films, and now EW have released a new poster for the film.
“With The Fitzgerald Family Christmas, Burns returns to the working-class, Irish-American roots of The Brothers McMullen. Reuniting with McMullen co-stars Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights), and Mike McGlone, along with Noah Emmerich (Little Children, Beautiful Girls) and Kerry Bishe (Newlyweds, Red State), Burns seamlessly weaves an ensemble story of adult siblings dealing with the desire of their estranged father (Ed Lauter, The Artist, The Longest Yard) to return home for Christmas for the first time since he...

Chicago – Edward Burns is a recognizable character actor, having introduced himself to audiences in the mid-1990s with “The Brothers McMullen.” He also is a veteran filmmaker, having written and directed that film, “She’s The One,” “Sidewalks of New York” and the recent “Newlyweds.”
Burns has taken a more guerilla approach to filmmaking in the last ten years, preferring micro-budget productions with a consistent crew. Since 2002, he has made six feature films, all outside the boundaries of Hollywood. He has partnered with Tribeca Films for his latest outing, “Newlyweds,” a sharp adult comedy about various stages of relationships and marriage in New York City.
Burns also has had a pretty visible career as a film actor in other productions, more notable as Pvt. Reiben in Steven Spielberg’s “Saving Private Ryan.” Recently, he played opposite Katherine Heigl in “27 Dresses” and will be in the upcoming “Man on a Ledge” opposite Elizabeth Banks.

The multi-talented Ed Burns doesn't exactly need help making a movie.
He managed to write, direct and star in "The Brothers McMullen," "She's the One" and "Sidewalks of New York" without seeking much outside assistance. But Burns is a modern man, and for his latest independent film, "Newlyweds," he's turned to Twitter and Facebook seeking fan help on various aspects of the story. Fans have named characters and even pitched in on the film's title.
Now he needs their help for the film's soundtrack.
Burns is holding a song contest and asking any unknown singers or musicians to submit a song for two key scenes in the film.
He needs one song to be a quiet, acoustic, coffee-house kind of sound, and another to be an indie pop song you could dance to. Since "Newlyweds" is set to close the Tribeca Film Festival on April 30, whomever wins is certain to get some serious exposure.

In the 15 years that have passed since he launched his career as a multi-hyphenate with the Sundance hit The Brothers McMullen, Edward Burns has continued to write, direct, act in and produce his own projects while appearing in other people's films. Some of those acting gigs have been great (Saving Private Ryan) and, let's face it, many have not, but they've all allowed Burns the luxury of making his own personal projects every few years (She's the One, No Looking Back, Sidewalks of New York, Ash Wednesday, Looking for Kitty, The Groomsmen, Purple Violets).

I had no idea Edward Burns was making another movie until I came across this trailer for a film he directed called Nice Guy Johnny. This movie actually looks like it will end up being a beautiful film. The movie stars Matt Bush (Adventureland) and Kerry Bishé (Scrubs). I've always enjoyed the films Ed Burns has made in his career, and Nice Guy Johnny looks like it's going to be really good.

The Clueless and Sin City actor has died of a heart attack aged 32. We look back at her key roles on film
Brittany Murphy was not one of the world's great actors. Nor, in recent years, was she even especially visible. But she was a performer of immense charm, with a knockout smile and a chuckling, bee-bop voice it was difficult not to be won over by.
For a spell in the early 90s, Murphy established herself as one of Hollywood's freshest, most engaging mainstream leads – a doll-eyed ditz with a hint of vaguely filthy goofiness. She was Scarlett Johansson a half-generation older: she shared that actor's old-school Hollywood glamour, the big curves on a little frame, and the brains behind the fluff. Both even had singing careers. But while Johansson teamed up with some solid mentors, and got films of real credibility under her belt, Murphy struggled to cement a career that,...

Over the weekend, 32-year-old actress Brittany Murphy passed away — and it's at times like this that we here at MTV News have to take a moment to reflect back on what it was like to spend time over the years with someone like her.
A lot of what you see in entertainment news is unapologetically manufactured. But when it came to Murphy, she was as pure a star as you could ask for — what you saw at home was exactly what she was like in real life. And as we got into the MTV offices this morning and began poring over some of the many interviews we had with her over the years, it was incredibly moving to see how her personality always shone through.

Towards the end of last week, as a kind of by-product of talking about the top films of the noughties, some colleagues and I found ourselves talking about those Hollywood actors who were big or biggish at the beginning of the decade, but of whom we suddenly realise we had heard not quite so much.
One of these, grimly, was Brittany Murphy, who has died of a heart attack at her Los Angeles home at the age of 32. Thanks to what appear to be its hyper-alert network of informants among the emergency services, TMZ.com got the story first.
Murphy had in fact been working steadily despite a reputation for being difficult and having left a production due to "creative differences". Recently, after a whirlwind romance, she married the British-born producer and screenwriter Simon Monjack, from whom she appeared to have picked up something of a British accent.

Anyone familiar with theater knows the term "site-specific." For those who don't, it refers to an opus presented not in a traditional theater but in an environment relating to the enterprise's subject matter. But that's theater. As far as I know, there's been no such thing as site-specific cabaret. Not until now, that is. Intimate-room vet KT Sullivan is changing things. She's appearing at Kathleen Downey's Granite Room in lower Manhattan's City Hall restaurant on Duane Street. The savory piece is called "'Neath the Sidewalks of New York." And that phrase should immediately be recognized as a paraphrase from "Sidewalks of New York," known more familiarly as "East Side, West Side." Which leads to what makes Sullivan's show site-specific: The Granite Room is situated directly underneath...

Hollywood actress Brittany Murphy has been exposed as a dating disappointment. The Don't Say A Word star, 23, won the heart of her Sidewalks Of New York co-star David Krumholtz when they were 15 years old - but the date turned out to be a less than intimate experience. David says, "Brittany is the greatest; I went out on a date with her when we were 15. Well, what I thought was a date, but she brought two friends along with her. But she blew me away while we were making this movie. My job was pretty much to enjoy her company, and she was this amazing spitfire of energy, just a bundle of joy. She would sing to me, do dance routines... I'm the kind of guy who tends not to let people in a lot, but she would have none of that."...
