Glimpse of life in Ukraine.
robert-17121 October 2004
The film is set in western Ukraine. It's one of a relatively small number of films that were made in Ukrainian. The plot is basically about a Ukrainian émigré that comes back to his village in Ukraine after many years away. There are some interesting scenes of some strange new year festival.

As is usual for most soviet films of this era - well the Ukrainian ones at least - the plot jumps all over the place. Besides the return of the rich patriarch, there's also a sub-plot centering around the local beauty that all the young men in the village are after. Considered a great film in Ukraine... not sure anyone else will think so. The film is actually in Ukrainian, NOT Russian as indicated in the notes on IMDb.
