The series starts with Chance being six years old and Danny is taking a family picture. Danny gives Chance a gun for the picture and Chance accidentally shoots Danny. Danny is ecstatic. Fast forward five years. The Arnos are at church, not that they are religious; it's just a great place to meet mobsters. Barbara (mom) chats up the wives. Celeste (16) charms the sons. Ruby (14) charms the grandpas. Chance (11) is Danny's regular number two-watching dad's back while Danny chats up the men. One drawback is that Celeste is always falling in love and sometimes forgets to take off her wire. And Chance has problems in school. Go back several years when Danny is on a case with his first partner (Carl Shenkel: David Jolliffe). His family thought Carl was desk cop-not rubbing elbows with mobsters. Carl gets killed and so does his family. Maybe if they had known the truth, they would still be alive. Danny vows that he will train his family as well as he is trained. Besides grinding them on their observation skills, even 11 year old Chance knows how to drive. The Arnos go undercover to bring down vicious mobster/union enforcer Freddie Jacon (Geoffrey Rivas), who firebombs building contractors who refuse to work with him. They are called in when another Agent isn't getting the desired results.

(Karen Lamond: Nancy Bell). Is Dad just doing his job - or has he crossed the line? Chance wants to know who the girl in the white dress on the bike is (Jessica Kessling: Katie Thomas). Flashbacks to when Danny and Barbara were dating. Part of Barbara's job is flirting with the boss, but things are awkward when she shows up at the bar where Danny is playing with Steven Kesseling. Danny must risk his life to prevent the killers, led by Russian mobster Novatny (Alex Veadov), from hunting down his entire family. With the death of the councilman, the babies are left with Chance and Ruby which they bring home with them. The councilman's widow (Mrs. Krost: Kellie Waymire) goes running to Novatyny. Danny is looking for the "coyote", part of a smuggling ring. When three young Mexican girls trying to get into the U.S. are found dead in the trunk of a car from carbon monoxide poisoning, the FBI suspects fashion designer and possible sweatshop owner Gabrielle Vega is to blame, and Danny is assigned to the case. Danny poses as a buyer from an East Coast department store interested in Vega's new clothing line while Ruby enters Vega's beauty pageant/fashion show. Barbara hams it up as a "stage mom", while Chance poses as a "youth-in-media photographer" and snaps pictures of potential suspects - especially the pretty ones. Ruby is upset because Gabrielle really wanted Celeste in the contest, not her (and Danny told her to "just do her best" because he figures there is no way she can win). Now Ruby wants to win. Danny and Agent Brooks go to Mexico to get some workers and end up being robbed and striped. They make it to Tijuana and call Barb. Ruby is told that she's not the right type, so she goes home and does a "make-over" to be what they want.

Danny and Chance stage the "hits" and take the intended victims, Barrett Connelly and Gil Fedder, to an FBI safe house (on an old military reservation). Both claim no knowledge of anyone who would want them whacked, and deny having previously met one other. Barbara and kids also go to the facility for a "vacation". Barbara makes a mistake by inviting Barrett to lunch. She finds a severed body part in the freezer. Her reaction triggers suspicion in Barrett and he does some snooping in their quarters. He discovers that they are FBI. While making a run for it, Barrett kidnaps Celeste. But it is soon revealed that Barrett and Gil do know each other - and Pappas. The case turns out to be much bigger than originally realized: the three are responsible for the largest Brinks truck robbery ever, and have been trying to knock one another off ever since.
