The series starts with Chance being six years old and Danny is taking a family picture. Danny gives Chance a gun for the picture and Chance accidentally shoots Danny. Danny is ecstatic. Fast forward five years. The Arnos are at church, not that they are religious; it's just a great place to meet mobsters. Barbara (mom) chats up the wives. Celeste (16) charms the sons. Ruby (14) charms the grandpas. Chance (11) is Danny's regular number two-watching dad's back while Danny chats up the men. One drawback is that Celeste is always falling in love and sometimes forgets to take off her wire. And Chance has problems in school. Go back several years when Danny is on a case with his first partner (Carl Shenkel: David Jolliffe). His family thought Carl was desk cop-not rubbing elbows with mobsters. Carl gets killed and so does his family. Maybe if they had known the truth, they would still be alive. Danny vows that he will train his family as well as he is trained. Besides grinding them on their observation skills, even 11 year old Chance knows how to drive. The Arnos go undercover to bring down vicious mobster/union enforcer Freddie Jacon (Geoffrey Rivas), who firebombs building contractors who refuse to work with him. They are called in when another Agent isn't getting the desired results.

The FBI assigns Danny to find a young woman (Allison Marston) in rural Utah who is missing and feared dead. She was part of a polygamist community, where men take multiple wives and everyone avoids contact with the outside world. To infiltrate the clan, the Arnos pose as a polygamist family, but Celeste is none too happy to be Danny's second wife. Eli Marston (Nathan Stevens), the oldest son in the clan falls in love with Ruby. Ruby also likes him. She thinks she is being followed one night and stumbles, literally, over a dead body by the side of the river. It isn't the girl the Arnos are looking for, but she appears to have been severely beaten. Barbara then discovers a diary that talks about a shed where disobedient girls are taken to be punished. Can the Arnos discover what's going on before there are any more deaths -- and before Ruby is forced into an arranged marriage with Eli? Eli wants to be with Ruby but not by force. Eli knows where Allison is and takes Ruby there.

While investigating a dangerous heroin dealer named Gina (Tressa Pope), Agent Brooks is shot by an unknown assailant and dies in Danny's arms. Unwilling to blow his cover--and convinced the shooting is related to the drug bust--Danny strikes out on his own to find the culprit. Meanwhile, Barbara, Celeste and Ruby host a birthday party for Chance and four of his friends, and havoc soon ensues in the Arno house as the party guests discover incriminating family secrets that threaten their cover. When the lies about Danny being IRS don't work, Chance tells them the truth; but the kids think that is even more stupid. When Danny tells Dolores about Brooks, she told him that Brooks had proposed to her.

Danny has been telling "The Fever Flip" story to his kids for years, but Barbara hates the story and wishes Danny would stop talking about it. It's all about a case he and a "talented female partner" worked on before the kids were born. Cary Fever had been a pornographer who brought under-aged girls across state lines to be in his pictures. But when they brought him down, Danny and his partner went too far while busting Fever - they wound up ruining Fever's whole life. Now Fever has tracked Danny down, and he's seeking revenge. Fever starts toying with Danny, but his real target is actually Danny's old female partner. And now Barbara's seemingly irrational fears about the story have become justifiable: Barbara was Danny's talented female partner. In order to flush "Carla" (aka Barbara) out, Chance is kidnapped. Cary is shot before he can tell Barbara where Chance is.

While working to implicate a wealthy accountant in the murder of his partner, the Arnos cross paths with Spiros Damalis / Floyd Goldman (Shaun Toub), a crooked New Jersey club owner they investigated eight years earlier for the murder of a cocktail waitress. Is Damalis connected to the current crime? Will he blow the Arnos cover? And does he still hold a dangerous torch for Barbara? The current case is about crooked CPAs' working for casinos and one of them is missing-presumably dead. Part of the cover is Chance being on the same little league team as one of the partners' son (Josh Evans: Kyle Sullivan) and Spiros' son (Kevin: Nico Zeola). Ends up that Spiros didn't kill the waitress and he didn't kill Evans' partner.

Danny is looking for the "coyote", part of a smuggling ring. When three young Mexican girls trying to get into the U.S. are found dead in the trunk of a car from carbon monoxide poisoning, the FBI suspects fashion designer and possible sweatshop owner Gabrielle Vega is to blame, and Danny is assigned to the case. Danny poses as a buyer from an East Coast department store interested in Vega's new clothing line while Ruby enters Vega's beauty pageant/fashion show. Barbara hams it up as a "stage mom", while Chance poses as a "youth-in-media photographer" and snaps pictures of potential suspects - especially the pretty ones. Ruby is upset because Gabrielle really wanted Celeste in the contest, not her (and Danny told her to "just do her best" because he figures there is no way she can win). Now Ruby wants to win. Danny and Agent Brooks go to Mexico to get some workers and end up being robbed and striped. They make it to Tijuana and call Barb. Ruby is told that she's not the right type, so she goes home and does a "make-over" to be what they want.

Danny is assigned to investigate Edgar "Eddie Breeze" Bryzinski, who is running a bookmaking ring from the back room of his local ice cream parlor. Breeze is part of a larger criminal organization, the head of which the FBI wants to nail for several murders. Hoping to implicate Breeze, Danny makes a number of big bets guaranteed to lose, but Breeze keeps covering his losses. Chance is placed on the inside as a counterman at the ice cream parlor. Part of the problem is that Danny does not know who the enforcer is. Finally, Danny lets his family convince him to seek the assistance of a seasoned bookie from his past: his imprisoned brother, Frank. Frank tells Danny that Breeze isn't on him because Breeze isn't making any bets for Danny-Breeze is keeping the money. Barbara also attempts to make some bad bets, but no one is able to make any headway in the investigation. Frank wants to deal with Danny before he helps him. Danny says he cannot help. Then Frank threatens to tell Breeze that Danny and Chance are FBI. Agent Brooks makes deal. Danny brings Frank home for a few days. Frank finally leads Danny to Breeze, but when Danny goes to see him, he finds Breeze dead. Frank escapes, steals one of Danny's guns and the car. Frank wants revenge on Gillaway (the head honcho). [Gillaway sent an enforcer to get Frank, Frank killed the enforcer in self-defense but no one believed him and so he went to jail for murder.] Danny convinces Frank to testify against Gillaway.
