In almost every Donald Richie's film one can find elements veiled to homoeroticism, moreover, the filming and artistic processes are verified as much close to his sensibilities and love for Japan. This work of his superior to his previous shorts. However, it will be difficult for everyone to imagine the ghostly undertone and perceive the homo erotic male consciousness. Lots of shots are intricate walks of the male body ritually dressed as erotically tender melody. Probably inspired by his work Mutsuo Takahashi, Japan's best known gay poet, Richie uses it to his imagination and perhaps, he wanted to show the male objects. If it were not for the Indian classical music that creates that sounds odd, this short would have been different. There's lack of speech, constant musical accompaniment and complete freedom from any stereotypes and conventions in conveying Richie's thoughts but i wish the score was something else.
I even recommend to check out Un Chant D'Amour (1950), an an erotic masterpiece directed by Jean Genet and Last Spring(1954) by François Reichenbach.
