A Tragic Story
dk77719 March 2021
Kuzma Glavan, an unmarried carpenter, lives with his old mother in the Croatian village of Lovrinci. Kuzma falls in love with a much younger village teacher, Ana, and the two of them, despite Ana's parents' dissatisfaction with Kuzma's age and the threats of Ana's ex-boyfriend, get married and have a son, Ivan.

At the same time, the Homeland War (Croatian War of Independence) began. Chetniks appear near Lovrinci, until yesterday good neighborly relations between Croats and Serbs in Lovrinci became increasingly tense, and after the murder of Josip, a village Croatian language teacher known for his patriotic views, Lovrinac Serbs left the village.

While women and children are leaving for Serbia, men, armed by the JNA (Yugoslav People's Army) and Chetniks (Serbian paramilitary units), are hiding in the woods, preparing an attack on the village and a massacre of their neighbors and friends.

Although he claims not to be a nationalist, Rade, Kuzma's best friend, also joins Serbian paramilitaries driven by a smoldering jealousy of Kuzma.

After the Serbs took over the village and started the massacre of non-Serb civilians, Rade proved to be one of the worst criminals. Unfortunately, such things did happen during the war.

A tragic story that is not easy to watch.
