Surprisingly dark and atmospheric Turkish noir
tonic96517 October 2013
I watched this one in its original language, which, in many cases, is the only way to watch these old movies from Turkey. But those who are already used to this subject also know that most Turkish movies are easy to follow, as their plots are quite linear, often involving murder, revenge, love troubles, etc. and Emanet is no exception. Two brothers, Tahir (Kadir Inanir) and Cemal (Salih Kirmizi), after coming into the big city from the countryside, face ten years of prison for homicide. And this happen in the first five minutes. After that, we see them climbing the Istanbul underworld challenging the old mafia system. The same old story: young and unscrupulous offenders who try to steal the scepter of power to the old ones. This situation leads in a series of killings, as the succession to the leadership of the underworld is always violent and bloody. The mafia leaders who are still alive respond with raping the wife of Cemal, who is secretly in love with Tahir. Without revealing more, murder, power, love will collide in a no hope ending. Everything underlined by an beautiful score, reminiscent of the The Sicilian Clan's soundtrack, very dark and effective. Please note that there's no Cuneyt Arkin in this movie, as wrongly indicated on the IMDb cast, Arkin is only present in Emanet 2, edited in the same year 1988. My vote is 6,5/10.
