Exclusive: Iconic British driver James Hunt is the subject of a feature doc from Deep Fusion Films.
British production house Deep Fusion has entered into a creative partnership with the James Hunt Estate on the production of Hunt: We Need to Talk About James, a 90-minute film that will offer “an unprecedentedly intimate look at the life and legacy of the man who helped define the glamour and danger of Formula 1, both on and off the track.”
Hunt had a well-publicized reputation as a playboy and adrenaline junkie, and was considered a golden boy of motorsports during his seven-year Formula 1 career, which culminated in him winning the 1976 World Championship in a dramatic final race.
While his personality and attitude made him hugely popular with the public and a familiar face in newspapers, his ‘live fast, die young’ approach was less well received by Formula 1’s establishment, who...

Roger Dicken, the Oscar-nominated British special effects artist, sculptor and model maker known for his work on Alien and When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, has died. He was 84.
Dicken died Feb. 18 at his home in North Wales, Mick Cooper, a friend of more than five decades, told The Hollywood Reporter.
On his first film, Dicken was a member of the effects team for Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968); later, he created and operated the dinosaur puppets seen in The Land That Time Forgot (1974).
Dicken sculpted several prehistoric creatures — plus a pair of full-sized pterodactyl feet — for the stop-motion adventure tale When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (1970), written and directed by Val Guest for Hammer Films. He and American animator Jim Danforth shared the Oscar nomination for visual effects.

A history of the most underrated British science fiction of the 1970s is, largely, just a history of British science fiction of the 1970s. It gets a bad rap. Think “1970s British Sci-Fi” and your mind will be flooded with associations of dodgy special effects, less-than-perfect gender politics, and so much knitwear. That, and a certain time traveller with a predilection for scarves and jelly babies.
But the truth is the 70s was a golden age for British science fiction stories with ideas and ambition, completely unrestrained by any concept of production values. While even the most pedestrian attempt at modern science fiction telly feels it has to go toe to toe with the MCU’s latest CGI eyeball-blaster, a year after Star Wars was on our screens the Doctor was still routinely facing off against dressed like this, and it was better for it.

Gerry and Sylvia Anderson are known as legends in the field of science fiction television series, and rightfully so. While they are probably most famous for their live action series Space: 1999 and the puppet series Thunderbirds, they have been responsible for a lot more titles. The British distributor Network is now releasing these older titles as lavish Blu-ray boxsets, and these are a sight to behold. Soon, the series Stingray will get its release and I'm looking forward to that. But already you can buy the set for the even older Fireball XL5, the first series the Andersons managed to sell to American networks, and for many people the first exposure to their work. It's a magnificent set. And a looker too, so here...

Richard Conway, a special effects supervisor who collaborated closely with director Terry Gilliam, has died, his family announced. He was 79.

The National Film & Sci-Fi Museum opened its doors this August and I finally got around to visiting this weekend. The museum is located in Milton Keynes, right in the town centre. I still can’t believe the town where I was born and live is the home of the national anything. Let alone something I have an interest in!
It is good to see both a use of a space that was otherwise going to ruin and a new business venture coming to life during the pandemic. Before going into detail I can safely say the museum is well worth the price of admission. Being ‘film & sci-fi’ makes it much more encompassing of what is on display. I would be the first person to admit there are parts of sci-fi I just have no time for, so this was of benefit to me. Currently there are a lot of franchises...

To mark the release of Journey to the Far Side of the Sun on 22nd March, we’ve been given 2 copies to give away on Blu-ray.

Classic sci-fi adventure Journey to the Far Side of the Sun was written and produced by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. The pair made some of the most popular children’s TV shows of the 60s including cult classics Thunderbirds, Stingray and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. Journey to the Far Side of the Sun was their first major live-action production.

Fireball XL5
It’s always a gratifying feeling when Silva screen produces another title in their successful Gerry Anderson collection. This time around, they have focused on the 1962-63 series, Fireball XL5 (SILLP1595).
The black & white puppet television series followed the missions of Fireball XL5, a vessel of the World Space Patrol in the year 2062. Commanded by Colonel Steve Zodiac, XL5 travels the universe encountering alien civilisations and defending planet Earth from interstellar threats. It was produced, like most other Anderson productions, in Supermarionation, using puppetry techniques that captured the imagination of a generation.
The Fireball XL5 soundtrack has been newly compiled, mastered and designed by the creative and committed team at Fanderson – The Official Gerry And Sylvia Anderson Appreciation Society.
The album features 24 tracks from 16 episodes, including the Fireball XL5 main theme and single version. In the opening theme,...

The new Netflix miniseries The Liberator is a World War II story about brave men who bond through that terrifying experience, and who say things like, “Fear is a reaction; courage is a decision.” It is similar, in all ways but two, to dozens and dozens of filmed tales set amid that event, in particular the HBO classic Band of Brothers. But those two ways are fairly interesting, even if The Liberator doesn’t always take full advantage of them.

For 18 long years, Star Trek: Nemesis was the last we saw of the beloved Next Generation crew. And, to put it bluntly, it sucked. The movie totally wastes a young Tom Hardy, has a nonsensical plot and there’s a ridiculous dune buggy chase sequence. Thank god Star Trek: Picard came along to give the Tng crew a proper swansong.
Nemesis director Stuart Baird has come under specific criticism for his behavior on set. At one point, he proudly told the cast that he’d never watched an episode of The Next Generation, acting as if the job was beneath him. To rub salt into the wound, Baird also made no effort to pretend that he knew who the cast were, repeatedly calling LeVar Burton, Laverne Burton.
But it could have all been so different. Star Trek: First Contact and Insurrection were directed by Commander Riker himself, Jonathan Frakes. Those...

It’s been quite some time since Star Trek: The Next Generation went off the air, but series veteran Jonathan Frakes has been keeping busy since we last saw Commander William T. Riker traveling through space. While some of his colleagues may have faded into obscurity, Frakes has found steady work both as an actor and also as a director.
Aside from numerous Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Discovery episodes, he directed Star Trek: First Contact and Insurrection, as well as Clockstoppers and Thunderbirds. He’s kept busy with numerous television roles, too, appearing on Family Guy, Adventure Time, Guardians of the Galaxy, and NCIS: Los Angeles over the past decade.
Still, most will remember him from his work on The Next Generation and as a result, it might come as a shock that Frakes is celebrating his 67th birthday today. Still, despite his age, he isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.

Star Trek: Nemesis is an awful movie and a horrible sendoff to The Next Generation‘s characters. It squanders a young Tom Hardy, has a nonsensical plot and generally feels like something that was tossed together with little care and attention. In fact, the cast has since gone on to fiercely criticize Nemesis’ director, Stuart Baird, who proudly claimed on set that he’d never watched an episode of The Next Generation and had no idea who the majority of the actors were.
After receiving poor reviews, the film suffered at the box office, though being released in competition with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and The Lord of the Rings: Two Towers couldn’t have helped matters. But perhaps it would’ve been different if Jonathan Frakes (aka Commander Riker) had taken the directorial reins. After helming the successful First Contact and Insurrection, he was certainly the logical choice for the job,...

We’ve all had it happen to us: after years of watching your favourite films in your “second home”, your favourite cinema closes its doors and the projection light flickers on the end titles for the last time, only to be replaced by the flutter of pigeon’s wings who come to roost in the empty theatre before demolition. It happened to me with the Jesmond Picture House in Newcastle and I’m sure most readers have had a similar experience. In these days of theatres without flesh and blood projectionists and the slightly automated feeling that brings to movie-watching, it is always special to have one last bastion, thriving on the tradition it’s built up over many years and one you love and visit like an old friend. It wasn’t easy coming up with fresh space ships for the rebooted “Star Trek Discovery” and “Lost in Space,” or the “Star Trek” riffs on “USS Callister” (“Black Mirror”) and Seth MacFarlane’s “The Orville.” After all, there’s cultural significance and legacy and immense pressure in creating what amounts to homes and playgrounds and battle arenas, with distinct shape languages that help define the looks of their shows.
Of course, “Star Trek” offers its own set of challenges and, with “Discovery,” it required a special Federation ship that was only a decade removed from the original Enterprise. For “Lost in Space,” they had a lot more artistic license in designing a futuristic Jupiter 2. However, for the USS Callister, the “Black Mirror” team had to steer clear of any direct references to “Star Trek” while still evoking its ’60s vibe. MacFarlane’s team, meanwhile, was tasked with coming up...

The Golden Globe-winning comedy series “Mozart in the Jungle” returns to Amazon for season 4 beginning on Feb. 16. Gael Garcia Bernal plays Rodrigo, the roguish conductor of the New York Symphony. In season 3, he and his troupe travelled to Venice, Italy to stage a new opera, “La Fiamma.” He clashed with Malena (Monica Bellucci), the diva at the head of the cast. Expect more fireworks this season as he back behind the podium in Gotham.
And the second half of season 1 of the rebooted live-action version of “The Tick” is set to stream on Feb. 23. Peter Serafinowicz plays the sassy superhero who says, “murder is just not cool.” The show is created by Ben Edlund, who introduced the character in comic book form in 1986. His comic was adapted into an Emmy nominated animated series that ran from 1994-1997 and a short-lived live-action version in 2001 that starred Patrick Warburton.

Bill Paxton as Hudson in Aliens
He had his clothes stolen by Arnie in The Terminator, faced off against xenomorphs in Aliens and took an ill fated voyage on the Titanic, but now Bill Paxton is dead, at the age of 61, due to complications following heart surgery.
The Texan actor, who began his screen career in the late Seventies, starred in some of the most fondly remembered films of the age, including Near Dark, Predator 2, True Lies and Apollo 13. He had a recurring role in the Spy Kids films and played Jeff Tracy in Jonathan Frakes' live action version of Thunderbirds. Recently he appeared on the small screen in Agents Of Shield and Training Day. His final film, The Circle, which also features Emma Watson and Tom Hanks, is due for release later this year.

I remember when I was young, my father, a sort of rogue ecologist who learned everything he knew about rivers and their ecosystems secondhand, told me about these species of bottom feeders that lived in streams all over the Missouri and Mississippi river basins. I don’t remember what species they were but the thing about them was that they only flourished in polluted bodies of water. They didn’t flourish because of the pollution necessarily so much as their natural predators, killed off by the pollution, ceased to keep them in check and so their population would explode. Despite their usefulness as a gauge for the health of a stream, they were generally unwelcome.

From Star Trek: Generations through to Star Trek: Nemesis - here are 47 nerdy spots in the Next Generation films...
Since Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, the Star Trek cinematic outings have proved to be a smorgasbord of references and famous actors (or those who would go on to be), and often had complex behind the scenes events that stopped some rather, ahem, fascinating moments making it to the final version. We found lots of nerdy spots in the first six films here.
This time out we look at the films featuring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and choose 47 factoids. Granted, there's a lot more than that of interest, but we've tried for ones that you might not be aware of.
Oh, and there are some major spoilers...

The first full trailer for Thunderbirds Are Go is here, featuring explosions, spaceships and orchestral parps…
ITV’s reboot of Thunderbirds, dubbed Thunderbirds Are Go, is an interesting prospect that many people are looking forward to. The mix of models and CGI has caused a bit of a stir, but that hasn’t seemed to quell enthusiasm much.
Now, we’ve got our first proper trailer for the show, which highlights just how dramatic and modern the reboot will be. There’s even a Hans Zimmer-esque orchestral parp at the end.
We’re told to expect the show in the Spring of this year, so hopefully it shouldn’t be long until we get an official airdate. Without further ado, then, here’s our first glimpse of International Rescue’s return to action…

The Last Starfighter meets Heart of Darkness in an efficient sci-fi adventure pitting a gaming geek against an alien invasion
Variously punted as Harry Potter meets Star Wars or Star Wars meets The Hunger Games, this ambitious adaptation of Orson Scott Card's 1980s novel would make an interesting double bill with Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers. Both films are about young men and women being trained to fight interstellar bugs with quasi-fascist ruthlessness; both films have deliberately distanced themselves from their source author's problematic politics (anti-communist and anti-gay respectively); both emerge on screen as subversive tracts on the dehumanising effects of state-sanctioned violence.
Asa Butterfield (who impressed in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Hugo) stars as the gifted geek selected by an embattled, militaristic Earth to lead the fight against invasion by alien Formics – insect-like aggressors most recently bested by the sacrifice of legendary pilot Mazer Rackham.

Hans Zimmer's roaring orchestral scores have provided the soundtrack to countless Hollywood hits over the past 25 years, and the German-born composer returns to our eardrums this week with the release of The Lone Ranger.
His take on the classic William Tell Overture is perhaps the best thing in the movie and worth the price of admission alone (did you know he also redid themes from Thunderbirds and The Simpsons?)
Digital Spy celebrates the ubiquitous Zimmer's honking great film scores with 10 of his best below...
True Romance (1993)
Tony Scott's lovers on the lam picture featured a razor-sharp script from then-newcomer Quentin Tarantino and Zimmer's 'You're So Cool', his version of Badlands's Carl Orff theme 'Gassenhauer'.
The Lion King (1994)
Elton John and Tim Rice provided songs and lyrics for Disney's sweeping epic, but it was Zimmer's music that helped stir the emotions for Simba's journey to the head of the pride.

Despite having just ten released film credits to her name, Vanessa Hudgens is a name known both throughout the industry and the world.
Without a doubt, the trilogy of High School Musical films are a big part of why her name is so well known. She made her feature debut with a small role in Catherine Hardwicke and Nikki Reed’s Thirteen, and went on to star in the failed 2004 Thunderbirds movie. But it was 2006’s High School Musical that really launched her career.
She took the female lead of Gabriella Montez, opposite Zac Efron’s Troy Bolton, and the rest is history. Within the next two years, there would be a further two High School Musical films, cementing Hudgens’ status as a bankable icon for Disney.
But being a bankable icon of the High School Musical variety like that naturally has its downsides. For whatever reason, there will always...

Update: Li Bingbing (The Forbidden Kingdom), Nicola Peltz (The Last Airbender) and Sophia Myles (Thunderbirds) are the three women co-stars of Transformers 4, the first Transformers movie to not revolve around Sam Witwicky (Shia Labeouf).
Bingbing's casting marks the union of Transformers 4 and China Movie Channel, the first agreement of its kind where China will work hand-in-hand with the American production. Paramount says Transformers helmer Michael Bay is one of the favorite directors of Chinese audiences.
Peltz is currently on the TV show "Bates Motel" and will next be seen in Affluenza.
May 1: Voicing bad guy Stinky Pete in Toy Story 2 was a turning point for Kelsey Grammer. Known previously as Dr. Frasier Crane for more than a decade on TV, Grammer changed everything with his villainous turn. He went on to play corrupt Mayor Kane in "Boss" and now he'll play an on-camera villain in the movies.

She’s more usually found in the indie or romantic drama world, but Sophia Myles is no stranger to dipping into sci-action fare with roles in films like Underworld, Outlander and (whisper it) Thunderbirds. Now Myles is about to take her biggest leap into blockbuster territory by signing on to co-star in Transformers 4.Her role is being kept quiet, though The Wrap has ferreted out that she’ll be a scientist, and a major supporting part of a cast that already includes Mark Wahlberg, Jack Reynor, Nicola Peltz and recent addition Kelsey Grammer.Ehren Kruger is back writing this one, which is set after the devastating events of Dark Of The Moon with the Transformers largely gone from the planet. When some foolish government types decide to exploit Cybertronian technology to craft new weapons, they awaken the interest of an ancient robo-threat and Optimus Prime and the gang must...

British actors with a background in classic theatre are known for bringing some gravitas and credibility to comic book movies, whether it's Anthony Hopkins as Odin in Marvel's Thor, or Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen as Professor Xavier and Magneto in the X-Men films (including the upcoming Days of Future Past).
From that same generation of veterans comes Ben Kingsley, stepping into the role of archnemesis the Mandarin in Iron Man 3.
The movie is Marvel's biggest departure yet from the comic books it publishes, with the studio (now under the aegis of Disney) clearly aiming for a much more populist and comedic approach. It certainly worked with the snappy humour in Avengers and now there's more of that in Iron Man 3, though I'd argue the laughs weren't as effective as Whedon's spot-on quippery.
The characterisation of Mandarin has caused much consternation among the hardcore fanboys, though it works within the movie.

Brady Corbet ("Thunderbirds," "Simon Killer") has joined the cast of the romantic thriller "Paradise Lost" at Chapter 2, Studio 37, and Pathe.
Inspired by true events, the story follows a young surfer (Josh Hutcherson) who visits his brother in Colombia and falls madly in love with a beautiful local girl.
Their romance seems idyllic until he meets her uncle, Pablo Escobar (Benicio del Toro). The film is Not an Escobar biopic, rather something more akin to the way Idi Amin was the dominant but not the central character in "The Last King of Scotland."
Italian actor turned filmmaker Andrea di Stefano ("Life of Pi") penned the script and will make his directorial debut. An eleven-week shoot kicks off shortly in Panama.

Not to be confused with Alex Proyas' abandoned Miltonic fantasy epic, the Paradise Lost currently heading into production is a drama about the notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. As previously reported, it's the directorial debut of Andrea Di Stefano, and has Benicio Del Toro and Josh Hutcherson attached at the top of the cast. They're now joined by current indie hot-stuff Brady Corbet. As a youngster, Corbet played Alan Tracy in Jonathan Frakes' brightly-coloured Thunderbirds, but he's since taken a darker route. In recent years he's inhabited uncomfortable roles in Michael Haneke's Us version of Funny Games, Sean Durkin's Martha Marcy May Marlene, and Lars von Trier's Melancholia. We'll shortly see him in the title role in Antonio Campos' Parisian noir Simon Killer. In Paradise Lost, he'll be playing Hutcherson's brother, although it's unclear how large a part that is. Given that he starred in the disastrous "Thunderbirds," it's pleasing (but perhaps not that surprising) that Brady Corbet has grown up to be one of the more uncompromising actors of his generation. There's been the occasional "Law & Order" or "24" on the CV, but for the last few years, Corbet's stuck closer to films more like "Thirteen" and "Mysterious Skin," in which he made his name. Sure, he might have been mentioned in connection with playing Harry Osborne in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," but it didn't come to pass, and instead, his major credits have been in more challenging fare, like the "Funny Games" remake, "Martha Marcy May Marlene," "Melancholia" and the soon-to-open "Simon Killer." And his latest gig looks like it's continuing on those lines, as the actor has, according to Deadline, just signed on join Benicio Del Toro and Josh Hutcherson in the Pablo Escobar drama "Paradise Lost." ”On his last take of his first full day as the Mandarin, when they yelled ‘Cut!’ the entire crew burst into applause, spearheaded by Mr. Downey himself. It was pretty amazing to see that.”
“That’s what you get when you hire Sir Ben Kingsley. He’s so excited about his part and so into this character, and frankly just scaring the heck out of everybody. They’re like, ‘You’ve broken us out of our skeptical malaise!’”
It isn’t unwise, of course, to assume great things from Sir Ben,...

Ben Kingsley is always game to play a big screen villain. Who can forget his Oscar nominated tough but utterly bonkers hardman Don Logan in the excellent Brit gangster Sexy Beast? Or his gusto portrayals of menacing foes Nizam in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time or The Hood in Thunderbirds, performances which were a thousand times better than the films they lived in?
